You don't sugarcoat, so people think you're being "salty". You're so genuinely honest and it's refreshing. I've watched people review books and give more cons than pros and say 5 stars! I really like your insight and I wish people didn't take it personally.
I appreciate how genuine your answers are. If it helps, I could always tell you were a kindhearted person from your videos. I think people calling you salty is mostly done as a joke, but I'm glad you let us know you don't like it!
It really does suck when people judge your taste based on the books that meant a lot to you in the past. I think most of us like books that people love to mock. Hell, I still love the Twilight series. I've never said that anywhere on the internet before. Even though I can appreciate it's lacking in many aspects, it's still one of the series that ignited my love for reading. I got rid of the books years ago out of shame because everyone makes fun of it, and it's only this year that I started buying them back at secondhand shops. Anyone who says you should be ashamed of your taste is an ass, and should probably work on themselves before anyone else's reading habits.
I'm in the same boat. Every time I reread Twilight, I can see how bad it is, but it's still one of those easy reads that I can go back to when I'm in a reading slump that's gonna pump me up and get me out of it. It's also one of the first books that my mom and I both read and loved, so it has that sentimental value. I've had people judge me for liking it, but if they're gonna judge someone based on what books they read, it kinda says more about them than it says about me...
yeah, I think, as long as you are conscient about the actual writing quality of the books, you have to like whatever you like and not give a damn about what others think. I just like to aknowledge the flaws in the books I read, because there will always be a problem and somebody will always judge.
pls just make the videos you want to. at the end of the day its either your happiness or forcing yourself to pump out stuff that isnt fully there so yeah
Caleb, if you are feeling horrible you don't owe us anything! You can always delay your video or just not post one, we will live for one week while you recover. Also, I love how genuine and open you are with all your answers. You are one of my favorite youtubers - not just on BookTube. I always click on your videos as soon as I see them. Hope you are feeling better!
I'm dying at this. Your reviews are great but you should just do videos that make you happy. When you don't get happy making content it's not worth it. I think people should be judged on what they say about the books and why rather than generalising books and painting them with a black brush as with CC.
Everyone’s going to have their own tastes - and booktube needs to understand that! I am so sick and tired of seeing people go knee deep in the mud trashing a series; and I don’t mean critically analyzing, I mean throwing shade because of a certain author, characters etc. I cannot say how much I appreciate your videos.. it is such a joy and enlightening to not have thousands of jump cuts, A++ reviews or blatant rants. I think as a community we need to learn a little bit as a whole about positive criticism where we can help each other point out issues or openly discuss feelings without being snarky. Also I know this got super long, but Caleb everyone has there down moments, I read your description and it’s completely okay to just want to take it easy - UA-cam is a hard thing to keep up with. Being creative and stepping outside of the box for content, especially within booktube, is hard to accomplish. Much love y’all, and respect! 💪🏼
honestly people who shame other people's taste is just wrong. Yes people are allowed to have an opinion and express it but i cant stand it when people go for others. But you should never let anyone make you feel bad about your reading taste Caleb. And if you want to make reviews, then go ahead and make them! We love an honest icon who expresses themselves ❤️
don't ever let anyone make you feel bad for the things you like! at the end of the day everyone has different opinions and if we would feel ashamed for liking something a lot of people hate we could as well not like anything
honestly CC is one of those writers I just can't hate, because even if I've read questionable things about her, the infernal devices is one of the most influential books I read in my mid-teens and it will always have a place in my heart. also it really sucks when people judge a whole person based on a book they like. you can hate on a book all you want, I don't really care, but no need to call people who like it ignorant or stupid.
i went into this video ready to lol my way through caleb's sass and sarcasm, which i love. i didn't expect the rawness of this video. i love it and i'll support you forever caleb ✨ thanks for always being real.
Cassandra Clare's books are really good and different. The only problems I ever see is the prevalence of romance and use of typical fantasy creatures. But the world and plots and characters are very different.
i hope you feel better soon but for real like are you g?? i agree with you completely on how booktube has become a place of just making people feel bad for liking popular/“cliche” things and just making people feel bad for something that makes them happy and i could hear how dejected you sounded when you said it so i just wanna say don’t feel bad about your taste because if it makes you happy then that’s good and don’t be ashamed of it
Some people should realize that being a critical reader doesn't make you a salty person. I don't think there's anything wrong with liking Cassandra Clare's books, I can't believe anyone complained about that... I like her books too. You seem nice, relaxed, and funny! I hope you'll feel better soon.
Its horrible that people think that way. I open my mouth about Red Queen and people are like ‘I DONT GET THE HYPE ITS A BAD BOOK’ and I’m like ‘...yeah I know but it came to me at an important time, its sentimental’ and people go ‘YOU PREFER THE SHADOWHUNTERS TV SHOW TO THE BOOKS PFF’ and I’m like ‘sis its a guilty pleasure, I just prefer to WATCH it than READ it.’ People think they have such an important impression on other people, telling us we have to like what we like and stuff. Honestly get ova yaselves
Dang you are so pure. This is real and I admire you a lot for your introspective behavior. Don’t let anyone decide who you are, you’re great and inspire me a lot. And you know what? I feel that about Cassandra Clare. Does her writing have issues? Yes. But it’s still got interesting stuff and I appreciate seeing someone acknowledge that and still like it because I’ve felt kind of silly for enjoying those books too. Thank you for being so honest, you’re amazing. ❤️
honestly this is now one of my favorite videos of yours. i totally get what you said about shaming other's reading taste. i remember reading acomaf a while back and i had come to a conclusion that i hadn't read a book that had made me that happy or emotionally invested in characters like those in a while. i know about the problems and i also get uncomfortable by them, but acomaf just made me feel so amazing and i would want more than anything to read it for the first time again.
just wanted to say that i added you as a buddy on nanowrimo before nano began (my username is violadavis) and you truly were what inspired me the most; i'm competitive as heck so watching you completely ace nanowrimo was what made me want to NOT give up halfway through so THANK YOU for being an inspiring angel ily
Gosh the more I watch your videos the more I like them (and I liked them to begin with!!!). I resonate with the way that you portray saltiness but you’re actually just calm and collected. It makes watching these videos so much more enjoyable. You’re friggin awesome.
im actually really appreciative of how u spoke about feeling bad about urself in regards to other peoples opinions on ur favourite books. this is something i dealt with too when people pass judgement on the things u care about and bad u feel like shit because of it. aint fun my dude, aint fun.
I’ve never understood why most people see you as “angry”. I mean just because you have a different opinion from someone else doesn’t mean your mad/angry. I’ve always loved your videos and I feel like you’ve lately really been putting out stuff that’s unique and fun! 🧡🧡🧡
9:40 I totally get what you mean by that, I absolutely love Diana Wynne Jones and her books and even just one of my friends saying they didn't like one of her books kind of hurt so I can only imagine how awful it would feel to have people undermine your opinions and constantly hate on books that are so important to you.
I love how real and honest you got in this video. You are literally my favorite booktuber so to hear you promoting not shaming people for what they like is just amazing. I also just wanna say that if you don't want to make a video one week, just don't. If you're sick I want you to get better, not just supply me with more content. Get better soon boi
Im so happy for you that you’re breaking away from the booktube norms and “formula” and you’re making the videos that you feel reflect you better ❤️. Take your time and make content that makes you happy
You seem like such a genuine and real person, someone compassionate and I'm sorry that some people make you feel upset/hurt you. I've been watching for a long time now and can say you always make me laugh. I'm not a fan of Cassandra Claire but I get why some people are (clockwork prince really shook me to the core ngl). And I adore SJM, but your ACOFAS review had me S C R E AM I N G. I guess the outcome of this is to say I love your content and I hope you feel better both mentally and physically because you deserve the world tbh
I agree with so much of this. I rarely make a rant review, I will point out a books issues, because I feel like my watchers deserve to know. But to hate without a reason just isn't good. Like, I still love Twilight. I know its trash, but I still fall into giddiness when I reread Eclipse. I just do. So I like how you explain yourself here. :) I'll still always watch Caleb, you make what pleases you. :)
Oh I feel you about feeling like you had to act excited instead of just being excited! I'm a very calm reserved person so I can be extremely excited without jumping around or screaming but that is what people expect. It's especially awkward when I get gifts because if I act like myself saying thank you I love it so much people think I don't like it. If I act super wild excited people know it's fake and they think I don't like it. It's hard for me to be fake or put on a performance and it's a tough thing when I want people to know that I actually am excited and happy! :)
You are amazing. Don't let the muggles get you down. You're growing as a person and a UA-camr and you are allowed to like whatever you do. Your happiness is what's important 💜
Calebbbb I feel really bad that people misperceive your personality and think you’re “mad” and “salty.” I personally really vibe w ur reviews bc we have similar views about things and they always brighten my day or put me in a better mood so I haven’t paid much attention to other booktubers. It’s gotten really cookie-cutter over the years and I miss the authenticity and energy. but anyway, I just wanted to tell you that I’m out here and appreciate your videos and opinions
I love what you had to say this week. People are worthy of respect and shouldn't be torn down for what they find enjoyable (unless it's criminal or harmful or something). I hope you feel better soon!
Hi Caleb. Thank you for such a wonderful, heartfelt video. Keep enjoying the books of your choice. It hurts me that you feel hurt. I love you and respect your opinion. Keep up as you are able. Don't feel pressured by anyone.
Make the kind of videos you want to make! I love your videos and think you’re hilarious, i’ve never really thought that you were a salty person, but a sassy person. I think a lot of us viewers subscribe and love your videos so much because you’re yourself and thats what makes your content unique. Don’t give too much weight to comments with different perceptions or opinions of you, your videos, or books, get you down!
I mean you could quit Booktube and just UA-cam and we'd still follow you, since we're here for your personality. You're the only UA-camr I follow who's exactly my age and it just feels nice. Anyways, do whatever you want, your followers are gonna stay because we like who you are!
I just found your channel yesterday and I’m so glad I did. I appreciate your honesty about the books you read and how clear and direct you are about your views. “The last book I read was in September” You saying that made me so happy because it’s honestly so relatable. I’m a college student and I’m very busy but watching other booktubers read a million books a week sometimes makes me feel inadequate and like I’m not a true reader. Also being judged by a book you like or don’t like is a toxic trait of booktube I’ve noticed as well. I never read the twilight series but if you read it and loved it then so what! I’ve never read Harry Potter or watched the movies and I don’t plan to and that should be perfectly fine! Matters of books being good or bad are subjective and no one should feel terrible and shy about what they like to read or how much they read. Don’t feel pressured to make content you don’t enjoy or to sugarcoat your reviews. Just do you honey!
This was a really honest video, and I can’t speak for anyone but myself, but I can tell you that I completely agree with what you’re saying. I like your videos because I like your personality, and if you decide to completely abandon “normal” book tube and start posting the random shit, aka book weddings and funerals, I am all for it. My favorite videos of yours are the ones I haven’t seen before on a million other channels.
Late but here Writing the same book by yourself for so long is hard. I’ve been writing this one book for two years because The magic world is so intricate and I don’t even know what I want. I even started side project in between because I just couldn’t sometimes.
I think a lot of people are iffy about Cassandra Clare because there are persistent rumours about her plagiarising her books. Rumours because there's no proof as far I'm aware but when it's persistent, people have a tendency to believe even with no proof. I stumbled upon this by accident because I was searching about City of Bones without the title. So I do think people have a more instinctual harsh reaction to someone liking an author they *believe* has plagiarised even there is no proof, not even a bunch of suspect things surrounding the situation.
Cassandra Claire is awesome!!! You are amazing, I like that you care about other people's feelings, it makes you different and stand out in a good way. Don't stop doing something you love just because others don't like it (unless it hurts others). At the end of the day do what you love and what makes you happy. You are awesome!
Get well soon, and keep doing what your doing. I loved your videos before, but I like them even better now. It's nice to see someone making videos that are fun and real 💖
I feel ya, I'm failing Nanowrimo so hard... I think I simply don't cry because I am in denial, I still think I can make it to the goal. Loved the Q&A, I wonder will you make a vídeo about your experience on Nanowrimo?
Caleb: i dont like dissing something that makes people happy anymore, *1 minute later* Peppermint mocha taste like cheese and is trash Honestly feeling so attacked right now
I know that there's a lot of booktubers who share your opinion on the reviews. I know LilyCReads made a video where people where sending her books to hate on and she was like "I do enjoy books people" and paperbackdreams also made a video where she talked about how her series mainly about ACOTAR doesn't really represent her anymore and she doesn't want to just be known for hating on books, especially if she doesn't know if those would be her opinions anymore. I think the internet is a place where you can sort of fall into a routine of making fun and hating on something really easily and that more and more readers are realizing that that isn't what they want to do. Which is probably good in the long run. On the Cassandra Claire topic, I know that I loved those books when they first came out. I ate them up. I don't think I saw anything wrong with them, but I also wasn't a critical reader. I was reading for fun. One of the clearest memories I have of those books was finding out about the moving and being so EXCITED by it that I was jumping and laughing and I didn't do that a lot at that time, but then I feel out of interest with City of Heavenly Fire and I ended up skim reading it (That's... the one with Jace and the sword, right?) And I didn't want to pick it up. Then, as time went on all these things were said about Claire and some of them, as a writer and as a reader, really bother me so I don't want to continue supporting her, but I think it's important that as people we learn that an opinion can just be an opinion. Like, there's this book that I hate called It's Kind of A Funny Story. That book makes me feel like a black hole, but my friend enjoys the book, loves it in fact, and she's explained why she likes it and I've explained why I don't and neither of us has changed our opinion, but we're still friends and we still mostly enjoy the same books. I think the problem is that some people are afraid that if they support something that's even SLIGHTLY problematic, they'll be seen as problematic too, so they don't look at someone and think "Maybe they have a reason, or maybe they don't know. I should have a conversation with them about this" An open conversation, not just a "let me change your mind" conversation. The internet has become a place where if you aren't a saint you're the devil. There's no grey in between, you're good or you're bad and that's problematic in and of itself. Anywho, congrats on winning Nanowrimo, sorry if this is long, even if you're not gonna read it. Have a good day. Bye
Caleb, I looove your rant reviews or "negative" reviews. If you don't want to make people feel bad, I understand, but your ability to be coherent with your thoughts is great so maybe a positive one would be great too. Idk, you seemed really down in this video, so I must hope whatever you make makes you happy.
Hey, I just started watching you and I think you come off a super sweet person even when you are poking fun at a bad book. I'm here for whatever you put out so (from a brand new watcher) do what makes you feel good to do!
Caleb, I know you said you did not want to make reviews because you do not want anyone to feel bad about their taste. However, I would really like it if you did a review of Nexus (Zenith's second book) because I want to know if it is worth it to continue with the series or just to end it there. I ask you because I really trust your taste and we share it (even though I joked saying it was basic). Nevertheless, do not feel pressure, only do it if you want to. Thank you! Ps: I love your videos and your personality!
You’re not salty, you’re you and you’re wonderful. I think your vids are hilarious, even if I don’t see eye to eye with your take. I think some people aren’t able to gauge your level of sass or able to be as entertaining as you and that’s where the hate comes from. Do you if it makes you happy, unless it’s illegal... 😬 then don’t, cuz you ain’t got time for that.
I FEEL THE SAME ABOUT Cassandra Clare please don't feel bad I trust your taste (and your 64k subscribers I mean...) and would hopefully like to read your book one day :)
i relate to that peppermint mocha thing SO HARD i bought myself some like last month and haven’t even had any of it bc i just hate it now?? and it used to be my favorite soooo
How the frick are you salty? You seem so chill and charming and I love your content. If they don't like your content, they shouldn't watch it. Just do what YOU want and are happy to do. If you can accept and respect others opinions, why can't they do that for you? Screw them. I hope you get better! Take a nap, drink lots of water and don't worry about posting while you're sick.
"I feel like I'm dying" I mean... aren't we all
But always remember cindy, W O R D S M E A N S O M E T H I N G
i always saw you as like a chill laid back guy who is super creative, can’t believe people see you as “salty” 🤧
Omg same tea
Why did i write this
@@nobodyjusnobody1554 Lmao
this entire video is the most relatable q&a i’ve ever seen how do you do it
paperbackdreams Omg. I love you're channel. And Caleb's. You're both so funny and great 😄
actual king of booktube
You don't sugarcoat, so people think you're being "salty". You're so genuinely honest and it's refreshing. I've watched people review books and give more cons than pros and say 5 stars! I really like your insight and I wish people didn't take it personally.

I would literally watch a ten hour video of you just typing or reading like how do you make everything so interesting wow.
"The last book I read was in September." Sameeee...✌️ 😭😭

I am trash for Cassandra Clare. The Mortal Instruments is my jam! City of Heavenly Fire is still one of my favorite books I’ve ever read
This video hit me real hard. I’m so sick of people trashing things I love; like man, these things make me happy, why you gotta do that?
I'm the same way with Cassandra Clare. The Mortal Instruments was my middle school life, and reading her books take me back to a better time XD
What happened to the a court of frost and starlight review?? It was brilliant and hilarious !
I’ve never understood why most people see you as “angry”. I mean just because you have a different opinion from someone else doesn’t mean your mad/angry. I’ve always loved your videos and I feel like you’ve lately really been putting out stuff that’s unique and fun! 🧡🧡🧡

If I act super wild excited people know it's fake and they think I don't like it. It's hard for me to be fake or put on a performance and it's a tough thing when I want people to know that I actually am excited and happy! :)
Same I loved Divergent
THANK YOU for uploading i was sitting here with my chick fil a waiting for some quality content
I love his unapologetic honesty
Late but here
Writing the same book by yourself for so long is hard. I’ve been writing this one book for two years because The magic world is so intricate and I don’t even know what I want. I even started side project in between because I just couldn’t sometimes.
I LOVE YOU CALEB YOURE AWESOME
Feeling like an actual dumpster is an absolute MOOD. Like. Same.
I love how chill you are now, I dig it
Boiiiii you need to read Tower of Dawn before Kingdom of Ash it’s AMAZING!!! that book rekindled my love for the series, it was so beautiful.
So I do think people have a more instinctual harsh reaction to someone liking an author they *believe* has plagiarised even there is no proof, not even a bunch of suspect things surrounding the situation.
it's kind of heartbreaking seeing you like this son, hope you feel better soon, you have all our love and support ♥
It's nice to see someone making videos that are fun and real
💖
Feel better, Caleb!
My all time favorite sub-genre to read is honestly horrible and has so many issues but I love it. Don’t feel bad about your taste.
i just found your channel and now youre my favorite booktuber, but the problem is that ive been binge watching your videos instead of doing hmw
I honestly like your reviews and I never correlated you not agreeing or liking a book with being "salty". I really enjoy the videos you put out.
We love you Caleb, just keep being yourself ❤️
I feel ya, I'm failing Nanowrimo so hard... I think I simply don't cry because I am in denial, I still think I can make it to the goal.
Loved the Q&A, I wonder will you make a vídeo about your experience on Nanowrimo?
"Y'all are just gonna have to get over the fact that I suck at everything"
Me @everyone
Caleb: i dont like dissing something that makes people happy anymore, *1 minute later* Peppermint mocha taste like cheese and is trash
Honestly feeling so attacked right now
Caleb, you're a great dude and you make so mny people happy. We love you man.
Feel better soon!
You are the person on book tube that made me decide to start my channel! Keep doin ya thing 🌈⭐️🙌
Bye
You're comment on tea.
I'm with you.
I’m obsessed with the sims rn too! Can’t stop downloading custom content.
Loved this so much Caleb. you were so open and raw. Sending love.
I hope you feel better😕
Caleb, I looove your rant reviews or "negative" reviews. If you don't want to make people feel bad, I understand, but your ability to be coherent with your thoughts is great so maybe a positive one would be great too. Idk, you seemed really down in this video, so I must hope whatever you make makes you happy.
❤️❤️I dropped everything to watch this
Do what makes you happy. 👌🏻
Do a video of you playing sims or creating your favorite book characters
How he's describing the taste of the coffee changing so quickly i was like "sounds like you're pregnant. But like... Obviously... Probably not..."
This was so real, and you know what I loved it. You do you, bro. You rock.
i relate to that peppermint mocha thing SO HARD i bought myself some like last month and haven’t even had any of it bc i just hate it now?? and it used to be my favorite soooo
Yo I really appreciate this video. Thanks for addressing the negative culture of booktube. Honestly, I love any content you make. Do what you love!!
Make more rant reviews they are the only book videos I love
