I always liked the Karmann Ghia. They were quite popular back in the day. This 1965 example is in awesome condition, and I love that exterior color. The engine sounds healthy, and it looks like a blast to drive!

Back in the 60's I didn't care for the looks of the Karmann Ghia , but over the years they've grown on me.... particularly the coupes . Nowadays I'm always happy to see one on the road and my hot rodder instincts kick in , and imagine how much fun they could be with the full big bore , dual Weber , cam and header treatment..
This a beautiful factory car, thanks for the memories.

Great video. These were incredibly popular as college students’ cars in the ‘60s and ‘70s. A nice design helped keep them on the road, but salty roads spelled the end for far too many prematurely. Repair of the monocoque body was expensive if done right. I hope more meet today’s restorers with high-tech materials and processes. These need to be saved. Thanks again Lou.

It would be a fun car to drive. Had a manager at my part time job, way back in the mid 70’s with a Karmann Ghia yellow colour not a convertible? Had a ride on it once, it was just a noisy as this one and just about as powerful too!👍😃

Love this car. I grew up in the 60's and will always remember the VW engine sound.
I went to buy a used Ghia from a dealership in 1975. My mechanic said the clutch wouldn't last long.
When I made an offer to the dealer,(minus the cost of a new clutch), he blew me off.
    Oh well.

Thanks Lou and Randy. What a car! It made me smile too. I love the OEM interior in this car, I think it's one of the most beautiful interiors that VW had. Interesting color combination here, very masculine. I love Karmann Ghia's from this vintage prior to 5-MPH Bumpers. I've always been fascinated with the 1300cc engine, and here's a number's matching car. Amazing! That sure is a big thick shop manual in the trunk, I'd enjoy having that and the car. The under-hood shots are a delight! Volkswagen changed to 12V two years later, in 1967.

The 1965 Volkswagen gives me good memories when I was 9 years old. Although my dad had a 1961 Impala, I remember the classic Volkswagen sound, the most popular car brand in town. The Karmann Ghia was the rare sporty version. These classic air cooled car were the world's number one economic car until Datsun 210 appeared in market. Thanks for your living history car videos.

Those were cool little cars. Fun to drive inexpensive to repair, and looked pretty damn good. In 1974 I was 22 and a friend of mine had one. If you needed to rebuild a VW engine two people could pick it up and put it on a bench. I did that with my 72 VW van.

Yes, you even mention that in the very beginning. It's absolutely true. A friend had a '72 Le Mans in 1985 and i thought it disgusting. 20 years later another friend had some old jalopy with 3-on-the-tree, beat brown paint. Only thing missing was a black vinyl top. I thought it was the coolest.

These were a lot nicer car than the standard VW beetle, but they rusted out something terrible unless you kept them out of winter driving, which most people didn't do. They were a lot more expensive than the Beetle so not many people bought them.

The rear arch line owes much to Virgil Exner's 1953 Chrysler d'Elegance concept, somuchso that Luigi Segre at Ghia is believed to have sent Exner an early production Karmann Ghia as a thank you.

The bumper with the "towel bars" were stock on the '65. The motor would have been a 1300 I believe with a single port head. My son has a '67 convertible with a '73 1600 dual port with twin carbs. The '67 had front disc brakes which was an improvement over the '66 with drums.

So stylish, yet so slow! But who cares if the engine sounds like a popcorn maker, this is much more than the practical, but bland Beatle. I ❤️ Karmann Ghias!

I have a 65 Carmia automatic convertible. I hear that it’s kind of a rarity. Mine was a parts car when I got it. The only thing that worked was the engine and transmission.

Very nice car but that engine sounds “loose”! Could be the microphone? Maybe needs a valve adjustment? I would love to have it! I passed on one a few years ago and regret it now.

@@loucostabile I’ve had a lot of Volkswagens and worked on a few of those engines and they sure didn’t sound like that one. I’m thinking it could be the microphone picking up noises and making them sound noisier than they are.
