You are so welcome, asparagus is a lovely crop...one of my favorites, if you are ever interested in fermenting, they are an easy thing to start with and are superior to pickled in every way. :)

I have seen mine with green balls growing. Wasn't sure what to do with it. Thanks for the information. I'm excited to expand my patch. 😊

hi Sislertx, playing in the dirt keeps you young! we stared with mud pies and end with gorgeous gardens, I can certainly think of worse things. I'm pushing 60 and strive to be like you some day!

I should def start planting those. IDK why I never thought to do that with my seeds. I've always just left them on the stalk over winter.

In your area, you may want to plant them into seedling starter pots and keep them for a year and then transplant to your garden. The new seeds don't do great in the cold...and they will set good crowns/roots in the seedling containers. That is unless you've seen a lot of growth from the berries that drop on their own...I'm thinking your freezes are too much and it might kill them but if they are self seeding and you're getting new plats then you are good in the ground. I've done it both ways and both work equally as well. The seedling containers just take a tiny bit more effort. Glad ou're able to expand the asparagus patch. It is a gift from Mother Nature

@@OldSchoolPrepper It's a new patch, but I'm excited to see it develop. This was the first spring that I allowed myself to try some of the shoots. WOW are they so much sweeter when picked fresh. I'd had some from my old patch years ago, but forgot the difference. I don't see any babies sprouting each year, so you may be right about the cold here. That said, I HAVE on occasion seen asparagus plants growing on the side of the highway on a few occasions. So it's not impossible here apparently. But I'll take your advice and give them a helping hand with growing containers.

Some make seeds..they are male and female plants ....unusual for a plant.
I have them sprout but none ever make it to the second year...I have yet to figure out why. I been growing for 9 years and have three 4x8 beds. Still I only get a little ..maybe enough for a meal..for 2...lol..I usually miss the sprouts...beautiful plants..I use the ferns in flower arrangements too.

EDIT: so I just popped over to your channel and see you can grow banannas so you are in a warm place for sure...from what I understand Asparagus like grow zones 5 to 9...if you are much warmer then it may grow but I'm not sure if the seeds will germinate...they like a soil temp up to 85F, I would definetly try growing them in the starting pots and get crowns instead of direct planting seed. where are you? (which state and grow zone) I'd plant in a seed tray and leave them there for a year. Keep Outside in the spring/summer/fall, inside (or in a high tunnel/greenhouse/cold frame) in the winter if you get below freezing, i'm not sure you will tho...after a full year they will start to form crowns. which you can plant the following spring, if they don't look strong enough, repot in a larger vessle and hold for another year. I used to do this but since my area keeps getting warmer I've found I don't need to do it anymore. When I started gardening 30 years ago we were 7A, now i'm very near a microclimate of 9A, so I say 8B but know I can push it. Things are changing for sure. a few years back I did a video on this topic: ua-cam.com/video/9JoC3GzsEAY/v-deo.html

I've planted my second batch from seed, this year they have outdone the older batch and I have more than enough for eating, I've started fermenting the surplus for the first time. I wonder if they will keep.

awesome! I suspect less than 1% of the planet have ever started asparagus from seeds! great job! From personal Experiece I can tell you I have (and am still eating) fermented asparags which is 11 months old. It's fine...I do keep it in the fridge though.

@@OldSchoolPrepper it's all from two plants my mother got from a friend as ornamentals. One spring I looked at them and realised they looked allfully like the ones you can buy for eating!
