Proud to say that Ron is my Uncle. He still rides his Harley, just rebuilt a cool old Chevy pickup, has a hand built hot rod that he made a lot of the parts for and is as nice a guy IRL as you see in this video. You should see his shop!

    Good Morning Keith & Ron:
Excellent video and interview as always!
USS Runner #476 was built in 1944. I was in the Navy at pretty much the same time as Mr. Grundy. I am a little older then Mr Grundy, and was in Sub service stationed at Pearl Harbor as a "yard" bird for 7.5 years. I had 30 years of service, and worked on a lot of subs;.... but I don't recall working on the Runner. I was on a tender in Guam, and then on the Enterprise for a couple of years.
Our machine shops were very well equipped, and we had many of these K & T mills, as well as others.
    Best Wishes, and GOD BLESS!
    Gary

    A very interesting video.
I was a West Coast Service Tech/Representative from the CA West Coast Regional office who installed many different MM CNC milling machines throughout Aerospace Defense facilities in the 80’s.
I was fortunate enough where I actually worked there at the K & T Facility in Milwaukee. It was most likely Bob Trecker and my Santa Fe Springs Manager approved a 7 month pilot apprenticeship program where I trained alongside those wonderfully talented employees.
During my initial tenure, I met/worked briefly with a taller Serbian employee who would perform hand scraping for many CNC’s. There he scraped the beds beforehand where he ran “yaw” “pitch” and “roll” using laser equipment. I remember using an auto collimator and interferometer. Once he finalized the scraping they installed the machined ways and continued the process of rechecking tolerances.
It was interesting to watch the employees. Most were extremely conscientious individuals and quality, fit, & smooth operation of these machining centers was important to them.
Does Ron remember what type of wooden floors they used?
I do remember the 12 minute lunches, fortunately I was exempt.

Thank you, Ron. Thank you for your service to our Country. Thank you for your dedication to your job and to 'your' company. Thank you for your dedication to a work ethic that, while not gone, sadly it's a rarity to find nowadays. I think that is one of the reasons UA-cam channels like Keith's are as popular as they are: he shares your dedication and commitment to doing a job right, the first time.
Keith, thank you for finding and continuing to promote the values that made America the greatest Country the world has ever known. While we've been beaten up, we've not been beaten down. Not yet.
Let's pray the clowns (on BOTH sides) can pull their collective heads out of the shade and remember they serve the Country, NOT themselves.
Sorry, for the preachin', I get wound up every once in a while. Thanks, Keith, Thanks, Ron. And thank you America!

Great interview. Great to hear the stories from someone that worked there and has so much experience.
I have a 2H that I got for free down here in San Diego. It seemed to be part a Navy repair station, then ended up in a motorcycle shop where it sat for about 50 years. I went to look at it, and the guy said if I can get it out of here, I can have it. Took it home, wired it up, and it runs like a champ. It was built the same year Ron and my step-mom were born so I named it Jodi, after her.

A great story of a working life. I was fortunate enough to have a former service engineer from H.Parkinson and Sons here in the UK come and help me with some jobs on our Sunderland gear planers a couple of years ago. His story is virtually identical to Ron's and they are about the same age. Funny how things were done in very similar ways on different sides of the pond!

This brings back fond memories of working at the Warner and Swasey Turning division in the 70’s. At the time they were building Ram, A type automatic chuckers and early CNCs. I still marvel at the skill of the scrapers - they too were paid on incentive/piece work by the square inch.
