    I feel you Sis, and the annoying thing is that they are laughing as if you plucked the money off a mango tree to get to where you are with your project. Piece of advice, when it gets to the plumbing and electricals, please engage the help of an independant electrician to validate what is being done. This also applies to the plumbing.

    Reminds me of the time we had a Contractor that we paid to prepare the walls for roofing.
    When we arrived a few months later he had demolished the walls of the garage and demolished our curved patio with a wall and replaced it with a rectangular one with no reason given.
    Then when i checked some of the "repairs" to a different wall i could pull the concrete off with my hand and crumble it.
    And he was a relative.....

      That sounds like a nightmare! Hope you got in sorted in the end with minimal expense to you. Thats the thing, if you leave it them and are not present, they do poor work!

      Clinton Moore I would advise you to save up a chunk of money, then travel to Ghana for a month and supervise the work.
      We will never send money with a list of work to be completed again

    You are doing the right thing staying on top of it. Stairs seems to be a challenge for Ghanaian builders. My builder had to bring in a "stair technician" for input before constructing it. In the end, it was done properly. Most of our people try to be jack of all trades........ Someday you will look back and laugh at these incidences. Keep an eye on them.

    The easiest way tp build in Africa is to take your approved floor plans to a construction manager/civil engineer. A licensed one. Then ask him and the Quantity Surveyor to prepare for you a bill of quantities. Go through it with them to understand each cost to make sure nothing is being overpriced. Then work on contractual terms. They build and you pay as agreed. He builds with his own money then you pay in milestones. Make sure you're part of the process as they buy the materials. These are tips that they don't tell you but it's the real basics in Africa. They take advantage of women a lot more because they think they don't know much about construction. You're welcome.

    my sister you are doing well , the mason means well as well as the staff , maybe he does not understand the point you are making just take time and work with him and the workers. The building is still looking good.
    These issues when it comes to building are worldwide.

      Sefa No worries. I’m USA trained and run a construction company in Nigeria. I build to meet California standards. My comment is just based on available local artisans. Thanks.

    Because nothing is being written down, the communication with the foreman is just blah. He forgets what you said after you say it. There should be a way for them to properly measure steps. Seems like the design of the stairs is not one that they either do very often or is just to complicated for them somehow. Could be the topography of the land, maybe even the fact that the land was not completely leveled prior to starting, or that the land slopes making it more difficult to construct the stairs evenly. I know from experience that contractors have to be checked on, or they do what they want if the feel you won't do anything much about mistakes. Still so happy to see you soo involved and building your home.

    • @PrinceSomorin
      @PrinceSomorin 6 років тому

      You hinted on what I think was the issue. The site was not graded and thus he has to do complex calculations which of course is beyond him.

    You say you want him to be accurate. What you really mean is “precise”. In summary, precision means things are exactly the same. In contrast, when things are accurate they are very close to being the same. These men need constant supervision before they utilize resources.

    There is a standard for calculating the rise and run of staircases so you have comfortable stairs in the US it's for every 7 and 3/4 inch high step the tread should be 10 inches in depth...makes for a gentle climb......Your project manager should know the local code parameters of stair rise and run....and should also be sourcing and scheduling material pricing locking in rates that are delivered by an agreed time..but of course that is Ghana and things tend to operate with a bit different dynamic

  • @kojomensah7474

    With the stairs you should have asked them to just do a ramp instead. And be careful with the columns. if they mess up you are doomed.

    • @TheOnlyWayIsGhana

      My take away is thank goodness I have chosen to be hands on and at site when crucial parts of the build are taking place. As who knows what would be done in my absence.

  • @kontomylitis
    @kontomylitis 6 років тому +3

    Is the stairs in the original plan or an afterthought? Why are they having a had time figuring out that each end of the stairs don't match each other? They could have moulded it instead of joining blocks to form the ends? Or joined blocks from the outside on each end towards the inside? Dont know why they're coming across like you're a pest or something and didn't think you'd have caught it when the stairs is the eye and focal point of the house? Try to get them to fix it, they're being sloppy and lack attention to details.

    • @TheOnlyWayIsGhana
      @TheOnlyWayIsGhana  6 років тому +4

      The stairs in the plan are different so this is a slight change. Exactly this is due to a lack of attention and planning. Under my watch it will surely be corrected, even if I have to sit with them the whole day (which I actually end up doing, which you will see in the next vid) :)

    You call competent and professionals to build the house to obtain professional interpretation on site look at the tread and the risers what kind of accuracy is she looking for? you may ask what calculation was applied and at what height per the riser my sister you will not understand anything because in building or construction in general you need a lot of calculations to obtain certain accuracy the problem is not from the foundation the problem most people in Ghana won't pay for professional work you Mason's in the street this is what you even if the pillars are not aligned stairs calculation is got absolutely nothing to do with the foundation
