Sure. If people put Scythe in scifi I wouldn't disagree. Probably sub-genre dystopian. Hopefully no one is giving you grief over categories! These blend so often into one another.
I definitely agree with you on Scythe! It explores some amazing themes in such a cool way. I’m in the middle of Strange the Dreamer right now and loving it 💕
I listened to Strange the Dreamers dualogy on Audiobook because of your recommendation and it was FANTASTIC! It was such a dark story but like you said, in a fairytale way. I really loved it so thank you so much 💕
I love that your recommendation videos are always honest and brutal but in a wholesome kind of way! It really helps to get a clear image of whether or not you think you would like the books
I have to say the first book in the thief series is the least engaging , the next books are way more eventful , they are simply amazing . And the character development of the main character " l forgot his name 😂" is really well done .... Love it 😍
I think The Thief gets even more engaging for adult readers throughout the series. The characters age out of the YA age range after book 2 and the 2nd book also sets a whole new, adult tone for the series. It opens with something I've really only seen explored in detail in adult fiction and that honestly really upset me as a young teen but that I really, deeply appreciate as an adult. Note: if you're interested in a series with disability representation, check this series out. You have to get farther into it but it's great.
I think a great YA book that feels more adult in theme is The Light Between Worlds by Laura E. Weymouth. It is very Narnia feeling, but it focuses on the children after they come back from a different world and how they struggle to deal with being ripped from one world and brought back to a place that no longer feels like home to them. The darker themes are depression and self-harm. This is a very beautifully written standalone book told in duel perspectives of the 2 sisters (half the book is by the younger sister and the other half by the older sister). Love your videos! 🥰
I always recommend An ember in the ashes, and graceling. I thought the idea for the six of crows narration was cool with having multiple narrator, but I really couldn’t stand some of them for the reason you mentioned so I couldn’t listen to that one on audio. Thank you for the recommendations! I didn’t realize there was a Latin inspired fantasy. I’ve been waiting for this!
I never know what to classify Graceling as. I live in Australia, and Graceling is actually found in the adult fantasy section in our bookstores. Winterkeep is also being released at the more expensive adult price
@@shannynm5532 Yeah. Its been said often that fantasy books written by women are often classed as YA at least here in the states. I don’t think being YA is a bad thing... I’m glad young readers have access to these great reads. But there is a clear idea that maybe women fantasy isn’t as serious or deep which is not true.
This is a great list! I often recommend The Queen's Thief to adult readers because that series just doesn't feel like it's YA at all. You mention The Knife of Never Letting Go (which is great!), but I would also say that anything by Patrick Ness works for this. I really think his way of writing will appeal to many adult readers. Besides Chaos Walking, I really love his book Burn, even though it isn't among his most popular ones. Thanks for a great video!
It’s an oldie but I would HIGHLY recommend The Old Kingdom/Abhorsen series by Garth Nix for this category. At least the main trilogy. Bonus is that the audiobooks are read by Tim Curry!!!!!! Absolutely incredible and from what I can tell is loved by all ages and types of readers. 🌟
Now that I know The Thief audiobook is narrated by Steve West, I want to read it way more than I already did! I loved the audiobooks for Strange the Dreamer and Muse of Nightmares, I couldn't get into the first book when reading it physically but the audiobook was really enjoyable. I'm loving the fact you keep recommending The Knife of Never Letting Go 😹💕
I just finished Fireborne and I loved it!! I actually enjoyed the best friend “angst” within the context of their trauma. It made the characters choices even more dynamic. The characters, even side ones, were all so fleshed out and interesting! Rock was such an complex character and he was always surprising me. Plus I love Crissa! I expected something completely different in the end so I’m really excited for Flamefall! I hope we follow another one of Lee’s cousins.
I think I’ve seen we’re getting a servant-like pov who serves one of Lee’s family members who was cast out, and I think that character is displeased with the old ways but loves one of nobility? I could be wrong, but either way, I’m so glad you enjoyed Fireborne! :D
I am super excited to get to Strange the Dreamer myself this year! I mean, I love adult and YA LOL I agree, Crown of Feathers is fantastic, and of course Fireborne is amazing!
I have been in a YA mood lately! So much going on in the world I just want a fun and fast paced read! I’m currently reading Skyward but I definitely look forward to reading these others on your list!
I thought you were going to get through the whole video without mentioning Scythe and I was like, girl, it's right behind you! I can see it! 😂😂 Totally agree with this list. Awesome picks.
I was going to say Burn by Ness is another good shout but a) I'm not 100% sure it counts as YA, and b) I'm not sure it's one I'd hand to someone who's coming to the genre from adult fantasy for the first time
I posted this question on another video but can you share how you note and highlight your books? I see a lot of tabs sticking out of your books and would love to know your process! Thank you for the content!
After The Thief, I would say the rest of the series doesn't feel like YA to me at all. In fact, I don't think the characters are teenagers really after the first (or maybe second) book, though ages are very clearly never mentioned in the entire series, which is interesting.
I agree too. This series borders between Adult and YA. I’d kinda describe it as pint-sized adult fantasy because you still have this well written story with great characters and stronger themes in an itty-bitty 400 paged book
YA is a hit or mis for me. Scythe sounds awesome. Need to look it up. YA writers in the Netherlands I do read. But they write about real live troubles, no fantasy. Still enjoy them.
Have you read The Thread That Binds by Cedar McCloud? It’s YA/Adult fantasy with a magical library and a genderless society. I picked it for my first fictional read of 2021 and so far I am not disappointed!
Did you read "Ink and Bone"? I'm halfway through and I can't decide if it's YA or adult. Either way, it's amazing and I'm so angry I haven't heard about it until just a few days ago. It has a similar vibe to "Fireborne".
Throne of Glass is “fun” and younger in tone, and definitely incredibly easy to get into. It just might be too young possibly, depending on your taste. Ember is a little more serious, but it’s still definitely easy to get into :)
This is my story with Fireborne. 🤑 When Elliot said that her favorite book of 2021 was Flamefall, I was totally sold on the idea that I was going to enjoy these two books because they had a mature feeling and were described as political🤗. I went ahead and bought both books and got to it. Seeing Fireborne here explains some of my disappointment. 🤔The story is fragmented and emotionally charged from the perspective of 2 teenagers. 🙄However, the book falls flat in the sense that for being a YA it does not have enough romance or adventure.😴 In addition, using the word "politics" is misguided.😨 This book wants to be political but the machinations of the politicians, their motivations, and most importantly their persuasiveness, shrewdness, and/or blackmail are completely ignored in the book.😴 Once again we are seeing two teenagers' perspectives and understanding of a very small world.☹ Summary, I did not read Flamefall and returned both books.
Sorry for the nitpicking, but why don't you mention the narrators by name? Thank you for the recommendations! Will definitely check some of these out 😁

I consider Scythe to be dystopian but it could totally be considered sci-fi too! Its kind of blend of both.
I've always considered it a dystopian. It technically is a Utopia, but since we follow the Scythes it seems more like the former.
Yes it’s dystopian, so sci-fi
While I haven't read Scythe, your description sounded extremely scifi to me!
I love that you included the fact about the narrators! Definitely something that can affect the reading experience for me.
I think Skyward by Brandon Sanderson is also a great YA for adult readers.
I had the opposite reaction to Skyward, it was too juvenile for my taste. I read a middle-grade series Lockwood & Co which is much more mature.
Going to read Strange The Dreamer next month. Thanks for the rec!

His Dark Materials trilogy. Read it at 35 and loved all three books.

I’ve heard such amazing things about that one! I’ll be reading it in February :D
Any great YA books from the 90s and further back?
Also, Ender's Game is perfect for adults and younger audiences.
While I greatly enjoyed Ender's Game, I avoid recommending it as the author is a known homophobe.
I'm really hoping to get to Crown of Feathers this year. It sounds so good!
Nice! I might pick up a little bit more ya this year. Skyward in january!
Now I really want to read Strange the Dreamer
"up the angsty-ness"

yes to all of these!!!
Fireborne sounds like YA game of thrones.
Hey was wondering would people recommend throne of glass series and ember in the ashes series for an adult reader new to fantasy??😀
Throne of Glass is “fun” and younger in tone, and definitely incredibly easy to get into. It just might be too young possibly, depending on your taste. Ember is a little more serious, but it’s still definitely easy to get into :)
Is it weird that sometimes I watch your videos just to hear your voice.???.

Sorry it didn’t work for you
I’m so sad bc I read fireborne recently and I hated it 😭 I hated the characters and they just kept making me angry. I had to dnf at about 75%
Ah, it’s always a bummer when characters don’t click with you!
What is the difference between adult and YA?
Young adult is a little more dramatic and builds more on relationships.
Now there’s “new adult” for a target audience a little older 😂
Sorry for the nitpicking, but why don't you mention the narrators by name? Thank you for the recommendations! Will definitely check some of these out 😁
