Hello friends! Wanted to clear something up: Hall of Smoke is considered a standalone by the author, but she has written a companion book, so on Goodreads, the story Temple of No God gets listed as #2. She has a “review” for it clarifying that it’s not a direct sequel 🤗
This is why I love your channel so much. I'm a mood reader, but worse the last few years - I am easily bored and distracted from books even though I desperately want to love them all. Most of the best books I've read in the last 12 months have been from recommendations you've made. Can't stress enough how much I value that.❤
Ah, well I’m sorry you’ve both been experiencing that, but I really appreciate the kind words, and it means a lot to me that any recommendation has been enjoyed 💗
If you like Six Crimson Cranes and want a non-ya I suggest Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier, it is an Irish folklore fantasy retailing of The Six Swans by the Brothers Grimm. So good
This is such a great idea. I have only been reading fantasy for about 8 months, and I constantly feel like I'm drowning under all the possiblities out there and I still don't even know what kind of sub-genres I love and what I don't, so this is a wonderful place for me to start. I'm going to try reading all the ones you recommended and see if I can narrow down my preferences with them. Thanks!!
I am so excited about this video. I have been wanting to get deeper into fantasy but no idea where to start. I’m so going to use this video as my fantasy bible to get me started. Thanks so much for your insight.
This gets me excited because my FAVOURITE book is warbreaker so now I want to read both castle in their bones and the seven realms series ASAP. Thank you for sharing!
These Violent Delights and Our Violent Ends is just so good! I love that duology! The Scythe trilogy is another good one. Shusterman has an interesting way of writing and is so creative!
This is one of my favorite videos of yours! I loved how you tired the novels and organized each set of three around a theme. I would live to see you do this in another video again!
Hello, Elliot. I've been binging all of your videos and have added so many new things to my TBR. Thank you for that. Also, OBSESSED with your outro music! ❤
Thank you so much for this video! I like fantasy a lot but feel like most videos on youtube talk about the same books all the time. Finally got the opportunity to add some new exciting books I had not seen before to my TBR list from this video.
I am not a fantasy reader, and this video is so so great. Thanks for your point of view and recommendations. It inspires me to try some fantasy, I mean, that fantasy which is more elaborated. I have read fantasy but it has been one that happens on known cities, so I think of that more as tales. Real fantasy like so unfamiliar to our reality is still something I have to explore. THKS again.
This was really helpful for me. Especially because I'm a mood reader and like books that have similarities. And I never know where to start with fantasy. Thankss!!
Wow I'm literally reading Engines of Empire and have Jade City in my backpack as my next book 😂 I didn't realize they both had that similar family dynamic!
I've enjoyed watching your videos when I can and now I'm interested in reading some of the books you've mentioned. I do read when I can, but I want to branch out from the books I have read already.
This comes just in time! I know how much you've gushed about Engines of Empire + The Shadow of the Gods and I bought them literally yesterday! And yes, Six Crimson Cranes was so, so good and my book club, Musaeum Society, is reading Hall of Smoke for March! And I have a signed edition of it (which was very exciting to find hehe). Loving your channel Elliot and I always love your recs!
This is such a great video, it so helpful! Thank you so much! I loved Six Crimson Cranes and have been really wanting to read Raybarer and the Black Sun!
This is such an interesting idea and it made me think about creating a progressive stack. I came up with one related to jinn. All of these are adult but they increase in plot and world building complexity. I’m thinking… 1. A Master of Djinn - P. Djèlí Clark, 2. The Golem and the Jinni - Helene Wecker, 3. Alif the Unseen - G. Willow Wilson
The one fantasy book that I recommend to readers new to the genre is an older work, but it is still unmatched as an introduction to fantasy: Legend by David Gemmell. I like the quote from one of the Goodreads review - "Legend is certainly not the best written book ever, but it is most definitely one of the best books ever written." Perfect description of Legend.
i honestly appreciate this video a lot. i've always read YA fantasy but ever since i first subscribed to your channel, i've been dying to read brandon sanderson. with this being said, my mom recently bought dune and i was going to read along behind her, she's enjoying it a lot so i tried to pick it up a couple weeks ago and couldn't get past 24 pages, i tried again a week later and couldn't get past 40. it was really frustrating for me because there's nothing i'd love more than to be able to read through them but the amount of information and characters and POV's switching had me so confused that i had to give up. what frustrated me most about this is that i'm worried i won't be able to get through the mistborn trilogy because it's also adult. i'll be 21 in april but nothing made me feel as dumb as trying to read dune so hopefully i can take these recs and work my way up a bit--i just feel like i'm missing out on so many amazing adult fantasy because of this.
Dune is an incredibly politically focused book that tackles a tonne of really complex themes like colonialism, white saviours, dictatorships and religious worship as well as having a really expansive sense of worldbuilding and lots of moving parts to it's narrative. It's definitely a big leap to go from YA to something like Dune, and Mistborn is absolutely nowhere near as complex as the former. I'd definitely say go for Mistborn if you really want to read Sanderson it cause it's usually the series I recommend to people who either don't read fantasy or don't read a lot of adult fiction in general as well as being easily the best entry point to the Cosmere universe. My dyslexic mum who literally started reading fiction a few weeks before she read it loved it so I'm sure you won't have too much trouble with it, and then you can work your way up to the Dune's and ASOIAF's of the world lol
Not sure if this advice will help or not 🤷🏻♀️ but don’t feel afraid to take notes. Whether notes app on your phone or paper. I’ve taken notes for GoT and the first 100 pages of Jade City. For Jade City, I wanted to make note of character ranks in the hierarchy, what the skills were, the ranks, and family connections. I did so because I knew I was going to love the book, but I just wanted to make sure I remembered critical info. Funny enough, I found someone’s written note about the same info in my library copy of Jade City (half way through). Someone had the same idea. I left it in there for the next library patron to use, as mine was typed on my phone.
This is a great video! I haven’t read Castles in Their Bones, but it *really* sounds like a YA version of The Bridge Kingdom, so if anyone likes Castles, maybe check that out! (FYI it’s in the fantasy romance genre)
I agree that The One's We're Meant to Find should have been considered adult. I LOVED it!! If you like that book, I would definitely pick up The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa.
I really need to finish raybearer. I started it and set it down for like a year now😅 mood reader problems. I also need to read the last book in the legend series, I didn't want the series to end😔
Have you read Kings of the Wyld yet? I think maybe you might like it! Also, thanks for the recommendations! Definitely adding quite a few to my TBR. :)
You’re very welcome! I started it a couple years ago but didn’t end up finishing it; something about it just wasn’t clicking for me! My friend Jessie from Jessie Mae loves that one though :D
I tried the shadow of the gods and i dont think its for me. I might get back to it sometimes in future but i was like 50 pages in with no idea whats going on, confused of all those foreign words in norwegian language. So im kinda sad because i saw lot of people hyping this book and i just dont see the reason for it
I honestly feel so guilty for not liking These Violent Delights and Jade City. Now I know that I’m not into crime family/gang stories, but these series are so hyped on bookish communities. I dnf-ed TVD at 45% and although i finished Jade city, i wasn’t really engrossed into the story and I don’t want to continue on with the sequels. However, I’m looking forward to reading six crimson cranes
I think you said Hall of Smoke was a stand alone but it's a duology according to Amazon, not sure if it's a direct sequel. Noticed it while I was adding to my wishlist just now lol
I kid you not!!!!!!!! I was driving listening and thinking of asking you what age do you think is appropriate for warbreaker .when i got home and parked you were talking about it 🤓🤯. Thats just magical. I know Bs has a Ya series but my little dude isnt really into syfy type of stories. I thought about doing mistborn ( 😍😍😍) but its a larger commitment for a 13 yo.
There’s also the Rithmatist, which I really enjoyed. The sequel isn’t out yet, sadly 😅 It’s sometimes considered YA and sometimes considered MG, but I really liked the Bartimaeus Trilogy. Fullmetal is great too, though idk if he enjoys manga. Mistborn could be a good one though, even though it’s a bigger book/trilogy!
So I'm wanting to jump into Sanderson's cosmere and I'm not sure how I should proceed. I've already read the first Mistborn trilogy and Elantris. Where should I go next?
I liked Warbreaker a lot, after Elantris, the short story emperors soul is a good one to read they are in the same? world. Mistborn Era 2 which is much more lighthearted than era 1 and then secret history are a great option or you could start the stormlight archive tomes
@@tiffinyvann9723 why not start with Shadow of the Gods? It's a new trilogy not connected to his previous books. If you like it, you'll likely enjoy his previous books.
I didn’t care for Hall of Smoke or Temple of No God (the follow up). They seemed so boring and I felt like had no real point of where the story was going. I probably missed it because I was bored though. 🤷♀️
Ok, 1. Why do you push asian books so much? 2. Why such girls books. Dudes are still the main buyer of fantasy. 3. Do you work for these companies? I dont know if i can take your word! What about dragonlance, stehpehn lawhead, robert jordan, tracy hickman, margaret weis
