- My first time playing a Cavaille-Coll organ. This recital is what the French call l"Audition. It is a half hour program between the masses at St. Sulpice. This is the first of three pieces I played on the program. I must give generous thanks to Daniel Roth for being so kind. This would not have been possible if not for him.
Enjoy!

Daniel Roth is a gentleman.
He never belittles. or looks down on anyone. he nurtures. respects. and guides. even with his almighty tallent and position. St Sulpice is fortunate to have such a man.He has such respect for the organ there and for all the organists before him. yet to talk to him you would never know, he never boasts or "talks big" yet most of us would. Bravo.!
Well said, of Daniel Roth, as others have also opined.
what an amazing experience to be able to sit on the bench with an organist that is as kind and generous in his support of visiting students and organists to his world. Daniel Roth is one very fine person, as well as an incredible organist. The world is blessed to have him!
The balls to play this piece on this organ in front of this man! Very impressive.
right? this is so badass
Especially, on the Gr. Orgue at full tempo with all keyboards coupled.
Phenomenal performance of such a difficult piece but played on the most appropriate instrument and under guidance of the most prestigious of French organists. Daniel Roth, who knows these pieces inside out and back to front
I always think it wonderful that daniel roth has such incredible enthusiasm with his students , and fabulous playing!
J Ripka: you're one cool cookie, playing like that with the guy sitting next to you. Bravo!
Msr. Roth is certainly one of France's premier organists by any account.
What a great organist- and to have Mr. Roth with you turning pages!! I love watching the expressions on Mr. Roth's face. Thank you so much for posting this.
I greatly admire Daniel Roth. Man, he is really something. Watching his appreciation and surprise at the choice of music was a thrill. Joseph Ripka is doing a splendid job here. Granted, he is a professional organist, but it's still a FINE performance. Thanks for posting.
What I love about Roth is he shows a keen interest in the young men who are playing. He a teacher and a concerned one. He not selfish with the organ and he brilliant. Thank you Mr. Roth
Beautifully played. I got to play this piece while a jazz ensemble was doing a sound check. The asst. organist helped control the instrument. What a thrill to play Dupre on this instrument.
Something not many have noticed yet: this also shows the great personality of Daniel Roth. I love the way he responds when he notices what the organist is going to play: he is really impressed. Flabbergasted even. He is one of the best organists in the world and still he is impressed by what other people do. That's a true artist over there folks!
Amazing powers of concentration, considering all the activity surrounding Ripka just to work the console!
Organgrinder1010 oh that work is so awkward to play and this young man plays it with ease on not an easy organ to play.
OMG.... Realize you are already there. The master's touch is already upon you. Relax. Breath. Take all the time you need. You can play any or all of these great master works. Now, what is important are YOUR... compositions. Yes, your works. Listen to what you've learned. Listen to what's on the inside of you... and share that with all of us. My heart is breaking that you have now come upon us. Sent with great love and great admiration. CVD
I often listen to this recording. Just a wonderful performance, fine organist and fine instrument. Love this.
I so enjoy hearing this young man perform! What a supreme talent!!
Tableau vivant extraordinaire d'organiste(s) aux commandes d'une extraordinaire "machine" aux sonorités merveilleuses;bravo MM Ripka et Roth
First time on a Cavaille-Coll....and truly spectacular!
One of the best interpretations of one of the most exciting organ compositions ever written. (I still remember when and where I first heard it). Most players play the final statement and coda too fast, but you really bring out the drama by slowing it down. Superb.
How proud we can be that Joseph Ripka is from Minnesota. There is a future in the organ world.
Just sensational. Wonderful to watch an amazing organist performing so well under pressure, and on such a fine instrument! I've watched this quite a few times.
Wow Dupre, Wow Daniel Roth, Wow, St Sulpice, Wow to all who assisted and Wow Joseph!!
Absolutely love this
oh mon dieu quel magnifique pièce et performance! et sur Marcel Dupré Cavaillé-Coll, rien de moins!
One of my very favorite organ pieces of all time! Absolutely breathtaking interpretation. It really shimmers and sparkles. Thank you!
Just awesome! DANIEL Roth's comment is priceless
I have watched this one hundred times, and will do again!
Absolument superb!!!
I've gone by this church, 3 years ago. I feel ashamed for not going inside this church. But the important thing is, I've seen it. Vive la France!
A very good interpretation and you seemed to know the score very well. It must be amazing to play Dupre on his Organ!
Fantastic! *********** !!!
What a great account of an amazing event. Having Daniel Roth himself turn pages and register for you! Based on this video and many others, he is a magnanimous, supportive and humble artist of the highest order. Hats off to you, Joseph, for keeping your concentration and delivering a fine performance with so many potential distractions around you. And thanks for posting this fascinating clip!
I liked to see Daniel Roth being so supportive! The recording was very distorted, during loud passages, but not bad for a video camera. I have and would love to be able to play this wonderful piece, which is every bit as challenging as it sounds.
Virtuoso playing and great help from the 'human' capture action! Really enjoyed the production and the performance.
This piece is formidably difficulty and the performance here is masterly. I love the dynamic control and the the dramatic build-up throughout. Awesome music!
Daniel Roth is also a great teacher.
Superbe performance d'une pièce que je ne me lasse pas d'écouter...
Das ist aber absolut Fenomenal! Bravo und Danke.
Poor vid but what a stunning piece of music. Did Dupre justice completely.
This is thrilling to watch. It was if you were all operating a spaceship! Thank you very much.
This is like the third or fourth time I've watched... listened to this performance. OMG.
Daniel, DuPre and the kid. Who is he? Where is he? Is he learning and or playing for a public. Beautiful. Talk about jumping into the deep end of the pool. Wonderful.
You are truly a great organist. That Dupre piece is my favorite. Thank you so very much. with admiring best wishes, -David
Fantastic playing. And Cavaille-Coll. Seriously!!
Two great musicians caught up in the performance.
absolutely first rate - and what a machine that takes 4 people to run it!
We had an organ recital last night at my church (St. James Episcopal, Hendersonville, NC), and the organist, Christopher Jacobson (Trinity Cathedral, Columbia, SC, by way of The National Cathedral, Washington, DC), played this piece on our Harrison & Harrison III/50. Our nave is built like a cathedral with vaulted ceilings and marble floors, so the organ just rocks in it. What a performance!!!
This is nothing short of stupendous - and that thing really does take 4 people to play it -
O my gosh... This is the best B Major I've ever heard... even better then Dupre's... This piece is SO awkward... in every way... and you make it look like child's play!!! AND with such SPIRIT!!!
BRAVO!!!! I LOVE YOUR VIERNE... Everyone says the last movement of the six symphony is the hardest (out of all the symphonies)... I always say FIVE
Amazing music. Amazing experience!
you looked as pleased as punch at the end of that! as it should be! What a freakin' dream!
Kemped Kemp hey I wish i could play it at 1/2 the tempo ! Accurately
I enjoyed this performance a lot. Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely terrific!🎉
J"appelle cela la très grosse performance !!! MERCI .
Organ musics is the most powerful, able to evoke able any state of mind!
Beautiful job! I have to agree with Si Smith 1000%! Daniel Roth.....what a wonderful man!
So have I! We certainly agree here.
Excellent.
Splendide
Well, yes- the master is talking now and then to relay instructions abouit changes of registration, but this is not untypical when there are several assistants in an organ loft. I can't say i can hear any evidence that the playing is 'hampered' by the people! This young man has staggering powers of concentration, of course.
Thats really great!!! sir D Roth turning pages and pull the stops! Sharing "his" organ to other people and he also seem to also enjoy it. The real master!!
Two console assistants and Daniel Roth turning pages and directing the entire affair - that's quite a support team!!
Wspaniałe brzmienie instrumentu. Piękna gra.
fantastic Playing of one of my favorite pieces!
Thank you!
You're the real deal, man. Bravo!
Brilliant! Beautiful & commanding performance! Thanks for sharing.
You're playing a Cavaillé-Coll for the first time of your life you wrote; it looks more if you are grown up with his instruments; fabulous playing!
Staggering! As great as this performance is, I can't even try to imagine the even greater and more stupendous achievements Joseph must have accomplished in the ensuing eight years considering the name means he shall add. Incredible. How could anyone, much less 30, give this mastery a thumbs down!
Thank you so much for uploading this. A joy and priviledge to watch - wow!!! :-)
Thanks, that was fun! I haven't performed it in at least 10 years, but now you've inspired me to get it going again :)
Totally agree!
In the close that piece is the best Metal I ever heard! The master turnes the pages. For me big pleasure. Thanks thousand times for charing!
Congratulation!!! A fantastic performance!!
Gabriele
LOVE watching this! It must have been so thrilling and yet nerve wrecking, although you keep your cool the whole way through such a virtuosic and technically challenging live performance. Fantastic (It must have been like making love for the first time to an amazingly beautiful and experienced person - with lots of people watching and fussing about - never quite knowing if everything was going right at the time, but knowing you finished well but didn't quite get the appreciation you had been hoping for!?) You enjoyed it at the time but also glad it was over! Pew! ;)
WOW.....Good work....love the assistant. She's really committed..Thanks for posting.
Thats Daniel Roth, its a dude...
I'm shocked to see six "dislikes" on the tally. I've read the comments and every one expresses admiration for your work, especially commenting on the difficulty of playing an unfamiliar instrument.
You did a great job coached by one of the greatest organists in the world (no pressure there, huh?) playing one of the most difficult pieces ever written on one of the greatest organs in the world.
If a listener dislikes this, let him (or her) explain himself!
Awe inspiring!!
good job!!
2:20 - 2:24 : You can tell he's also amazed and at 2:24 he wants to cry. I'm there often, watching many talented people make music very easily
This is awesome Joey! - Alexis
BRAVO
WOW! He is GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bravo!
good job; you seem to be a bit excited; exactly like me playing this the first time at a great organ in the cathedral where I live; so I know this feeling; but in the end one gets really transformed and all the excitement has gone; it is just wonderful
meraviglioso il brano e bravissimo l'organista
you look a little bit like Dupre himself when he was a young man...awesome post!
I really enjoyed this, superb!
Joseph looks like a young Marcel Dupre. Daniel looks like a kid at heart. :-)
You handle it *very* well, to be 'behind the wheel' of that beast for the first time, sir!
Did you have any practice time prior? EXCELLENT! That is just NOT an easy piece.
so wonderful
Priest: ''...and a very good Sunday after all...'' lol!!!
Christ this guys good.I play the organ and play this piece but this guy has something special.Well done!
I do not think blasphemy is necessary
WOW!!!
This is amazing!
I love this piece of music, but didn't think I'd actually get to see it played at St Sulpice.
You must have been under pressure with Roth sitting right beside you!
The fugue is a little slower than what I 'm used to, but this was a brilliant performance!
As an Organist.... I could NEVER play that piece!!! OH MY!!!! But what an honor to play for Daniel Roth. BRAVO!!
Great piece and great performance! Best wishes from Berlin!
this is amazing
you are an amazing organist
Love this spiece. The pedal theme is the same as the old American TV show, "The Last of the Mohicans". Heh heh. Great job.
amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
