I ordered one even though I have had the Steam deck since launch. My reason to buy the LeGo (l love this abbreviation lol) is to replace an aging gaming laptop I had, flexibility to use it as a tablet, and give me the Windows gaming experience for Gamepass and games that just do not work with SteamOS.
I know battery is a concern for most, but having my Steamdeck since launch (Q2) I rarely get more than 2 hours of battery and find myself already tethered to a plug anyway. So much so I have plugs in my bedroom and living room so I don't have to carry one around with me. Maybe the OLED gets better battery life, but these gaming devices are not Nintendo Switches and battery is going to be poor in general. Yes, you can tweak TDP but I have tried that and rarely does it give me what I have seen others report. Though, I do use TDP on my Steamdeck to help control fan noise to keep my wife from complaining while we are out together gaming.
Mine should be here in a day or two and I am excited!
Great video BTW. Really enjoy your content.

Could use some advice, so ive been in the market for a new handheld besides my steam deck. I take my laptop to school but its big and kinda wanted a surface pro and just take my steam deck but wanted something stringer like a legion go. But then I see the perfect handheld for me, checks all the boxes, 3 in 1 10.95 ltps LCD screen, tablet, laptop, HANDHELD! its the OnexPlayer X1. So I backed it right away and was excited to hear its got intels new chip that's also in the MSI Claw that's competing with the Ally, but now I hear the performance isn't so great and with its current beta drivers cant beat a z1 extreme/7840u in gaming.
So now idk what I what to do, keep or cancel, i was just expecting it to be z1 extreme level and if it just needs time for drivers to get it there then id be happy with it and keep it, but if its the performance is less than that even after numerous driver updates id probably cancel and just wait on ultras second gen or just stick amd but I rather just keep it because I think its a really cool device I just want it to preform as well as a z1 extreme after updates, I would really miss the 3 in 1 form factor and mainly the handheld mode that drew me to the X1 and I don't want something else like the flow z13 or id just take my gaming laptop instead. Other guys in the discord just say hold the pre order and its the stronger chip but wait for drivers to get better, that by the time Claws out Intel will be pushing drivers out. So I guess my real question is do you think the 155 ultra will get better drivers and be able to actual compete with the z1 extreme? am I always going to be 10-15 frames behind a z1 extreme? Thats based on a couple vids I did find.

Obviously it has to do with being a handheld, duh
But it can apply slightly to small laptops, specially budget ones, Windows not only doesn't have handheld UI like Steam OS and ChimeraOS, Windows is by far more resource heavy so you get less battery and performance
Also Windows is always sending data about you to their servers and you can't tweak as much
That is one of the reasons why at 11 Watts or less the Steam Deck performs better than Asus ROG Ally when using Windows

Think about it this way: imagine giving your 4 year old brother a steam deck. How much do you think it would take him to set it up and get playing? For us experienced folk it's easy, but it won't appeal to the masses if it doesn't simplify it's UI. My son is pretty tech educated and gave up on trying to play an emulator game on my Ally, then picked up his switch and fired up SNES online in seconds.

This is a deal-breaker for people who love fighting games. Lenovo better bring out a left Joycon with a proper d-pad for fighting games, and they might as well bundle it with a right Joycon with 6 face buttons. Fighting games: Soul Calibur, Street Fighter, Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat, King of Fighters, Guilty Gear, Samurai Showdown, Tekken, Dragon Ball Z, just to name a few!

I'm an early steam deck adapter. When the Ally came out, I got it as well and my game time went divided between Deck and Ally. Then the Go released and I went and got that as well. After a bumby first month, I stopped using the Ally and ended up selling it. My use of the Deck has been reduced significantly as well, but I can't bring myself to sell it. The Legion Go is beast. It performs far better than the Ally and any other device with the same specs. Apart performance though, the many use-cases the Go makes possible through clever hardware design and thoughtful features cannot be matched by any device of the current handheld generation. What for me personally has been the best thing though is the way Lenovo supports the device and communicates with the userbase with total transparency and consistency. I am really excited to see what new devices will come out from the likes of Alienware, Msi etc, because they will all throw their hats in this ring, no doubt. Still, the Lenovo customer support will be the bar to meet with new handheld pcs coming out in 2024.
PS. Nice vid, but you are using the power profiles less than optimally, its not supposed to be set that way when away from the wall. Regardless, the update that came out yesterday has new things like custom fan curves and other tweaks that will further optimize performance on the Go.

Tip: put OS power mode to efficiency so you get more hours with same performance
The CPU doesn't need to be maxed out, even less with a iGPU where you will likely be playing at 30 fps for new AAA games and 60 for games from the PS4/Xbox One gen (only indies or even older games which can run on potatoes CPUs will make use of all Hz from the screen)

The Z1 extreme chip is not powerful enough to utilize the full screen resolution, however there is and fluid motion frames and fsr3 to help with better quality visual and fps which is not yet released on handheld pc. At current state, this chip is not strong enough and you will have to sacrifice fps for more quality visual. If you are ok with playing around 30-40fps on triple A games then you are good.

I am still getting used to it. Other than that Legion go is actually doing better than other handhelds PC. The build quality, thumbsticks, the screen, the battery life, the temp control, the drive storage are all better than the ROG Ally. The touchpad and the scroll behind the right controller provide almost the best solution to navigate throgh the awkward operating system than all other handheld PCs. Unfortunately Windows becomes all the manufacturer's biggest issue. It's tough to put blame on anyone because these aren't devices 20-30 million users are on, these are a niche market and you can't expect Microsoft to design an entirely new OS when the return on investment isn't there yet. The best we can hope for is a power management option built into windows specifically for these devices. Steam Deck has been working on steam OS as a pet project for a decade, but MSI, Lenovo, and Asus don't have a decade, and they also don't want the limitations of Linux. Just my thoughts.

This device has made me realize how much of a tinkerer I am. I really like trying to get old emulations to work, customize things etc. This device is pretty awesome. My girlfriend really likes her switch and thinks I'm crazy. Lol she's mainly into offline retro games, and she wants them to just work without thought. I value decent graphics and enjoy the process of setting things up as much as I like gaming itself. I think in summary, if you want something to just work and don't mind paying full price for every game, get a switch or steam deck. These Windows machines in my opinion are meant for people who like to customize and possibly see what other purposes the device could be useful for. I think that's the main division.

I think Steam Deck is still the king, especially with that new OLED model. It really caters the handheld gaming goal, not pushing resolutions to a ridiculous number, for instance. It strives for balanced performance and longevity of the gaming session instead.
Their software support is also damn excellent. It is the only one that instead of just providing doors to access different libraries, providing a Steam Deck profile for each game instead, guaranteed at least adequate performance so you don't need to tinker and look for the right settings yourself.

So unless you're a M$ slave, which Valve barely supports, it's all fine. Surely for us, desktop Linux users, we're not missing anything.
Indeed if you play many modern games, 64GB is just not enough.
Shader cache are not meant to be removed manually, because the point of a cache is to not reload, or in case of shader, to not recompile again when you load the game for the next time.
Profiles will keep being added, it's a mammoth task considering how many games are there already. But you can compare how many of them now vs when Steam Deck was first released, which shows that Valve has been working hard.
