- "The Lotus Eater" by W. Somerset Maugham tells the story of Thomas Wilson, who abandons his conventional life as a bank manager to live on the idyllic island of Capri. Wilson buys an annuity to fund a carefree existence for twenty-five years, planning to end his life when the money runs out. As the years pass, he enjoys a life of leisure, immersing himself in the natural beauty and simple pleasures of the island. However, when the annuity expires, he finds himself unable .....

I'm deaf. You know what I would give to be able to hear an AI voice? Any voice. So here's a little advice for the people who complain about the AI voice, mute the tv and use closed captions. That's what I have to do. Oh! What's that? That's too much trouble? Oh you poor baby! You can't get your way ALL the time!!? GROW UP! Stop complaining! Be grateful for your ability to hear!!! Thank you for the upload I love your videos. Thanks also for enabling the closed captions!!
We may not hear well but I'm glad you've used your voice here...loud and clear! Thankyou!
Many blessings...
Keep travelling in storyland, always ✌🏼
PS...thank the stars for CC too! 😉✨
Love your spirit and strength. You tell em ! 😊
On my part, it doesn't bother me at all. I merely smile when the AI voice reads what was clearly a typo in the script it was given. We're all human after all.
Guilt does not look good on u. Sorry for deafness, but u sound like a person, who doesn’t want pity. For that I applaud u, but don’t use the guilt trip on me. I really don’t have a stick in this fight, as AL does not threaten my live-hood. But for those who it does,u must apply your talents, cause there is no stopping this. I do hope and pray that more will done to improve our deaf communities.❤️
i’m grateful for these free stories, AI narration and all. they really make my day!
So pleased I discovered your channel! Love Somerset Maugham ‘s work. Greetings from Alsace France👍😊
Greetings from Lick Skillet , Arkansas !

Age 70
Thankyou
Too fast for me
So I listen at 0.75 speed
The narrator makes all the difference to a story
Totally agree..I’m a bit older than you..living on a large island .
I love Somerset Maugham. His reflections about human nature, his descriptions are so sharp and to the point. I love his hedonism. Thank you so much for these stories. They mean a lot to me.
Really been loving this channel. Thank you so much for sharing these works. Although I do like the British narration better for this author. Just seems more fitting.
This story reminds me of Maugham’s The Razor’s Edge. Oh yes, a young man’s quest for a self-satisfying life adventure eventually comes to an unfortunate end.
Ah...Maugham is truly a gift that keeps on giving. I'm an older gent now and read a lot of Maugham in my younger days. Now, with the internet I have discovered quite a few short stories of his I'd not read.I really enjoyed this one.
Thank you.
"i think on the whole, we all get what we deserve, but that doesn't prevent its being rather horrible." ha ha... what a great summation.
Is this where John le Carre got the term 'Lotus Eater' from?
When Jim Prideaux (Head of the scalphunters) was brought back from captivity with Karla, Toby Esterhase gave him £1000 from the reptile fund, an Alvis car
and ordered him to become a 'Lotus Eater'. That's when he accepted supply teaching work at a second rate prep school, Thursgood Academy, near Taunton.
The Ashenden stories deserve far more recognition as being the foundation on which Graham Greene and John le Carre based their espionage works.
Sorry, do get it, more info., for those who just beginning to listen.
The grasshopper lounged and fiddled while the ants toiled. Winter srrived and nothing put away….hate when that happens.
A young man who. Became. Immortal, but lost his specific identity 😊
This voice is quite good. The Brit accented one has a weird pace.
❤

Great channel , this one is being read a bit fast .
LOTUS - lots of trouble usually serious. Age 70 living in Luxor. Enjoy, you can't take it with you.
What was the meaning/message of this story, if any at all? Thanks.
Begin any endeavor with the end in mind.
And SAD...😢
Momento mori
Life is change and full of whimsy and irony but is also what you make it.
Poke it the eye with a blunt stick surly????
This story will make a helpless
feeling echoed in reader's mind.
The protagonist planned an advancing
budget, then going to a long rest leisure
life, is undiputedable and doesn't hurt
anybody's interest.
"IF" he changed the expenditure strategy.
taking $700 than $1000 , monthly,
from his annuity, for example. He can
last to 70 years old. More aggressively,
taking $500 then lasts to 80 years old.
The ending would be happiness and no
regret in life.
I don't like the ending, but sloth won, I guess. People's attitude toward a down and outer, is rather appalling.
I guess the narration is AI but it's not bad, I've heard much worse. I only noticed two instances where it got something wrong. One was just a wrong intonation, something said not quite the way a live human would say it, and the other was a mispronounced Italian name. It was no big deal either time. It would be a good idea to edit those two spots but I'm ok with the video as is. It doesn't do Maugham any serious injustice; if it did I wouldn't come back to this channel anymore.
The AI fooled me for a good while. But the type of errors made and the inability to immediately correct them convinced that this is the output of an infernal machine. This will be my third and last story. The charm is gone.
Bye @@big566bunny
So very many obvious errors of simple words that I'll guess this is, if not free, then quite cheap AI. I'll pass on the story as it creates too many audible and jarring speed bumps; pity as I've been enthralled by those before it. I shant give up on you but if you have control, please avoid this if you will. Thank you Dear😊
It's not too bad
It’s not bad but bad enough! Audible has all these for very little outlay. Do get those they are so much better and the actors reading them will keep on earning a living!
