    Inspired by your video I have converted my Nikon D200 to full spectrum IR. It took me quite a lot of nerve and several attempts to get it right and I am now waiting for a 67mm 25A red filter to arrive in the post. Many thanks for taking the time to upload this video, it was really helpful.

    i just ordered one for my old canon. i'm not sure if that conversion is going to be more difficult and in hindsight i should've purchased one of the Nikons you mentioned and converted it.

    Hi Evan, I'm
    starting to do infrared, and I removed the hot mirror from a canon t5i
    but I did not replace it with an infrared filter. I bought a
    Hoya R72(infrared) to thread in the lens but I still not getting a good
    result, since I intend to use it to record videos and make photos with
    high speeds.
    I did get some ''ok'' shoots but very noisy still
    My plan is to shoot 'full spectrum'' infrared video and take pictures with high speeds
    Thank you very much for putting this content here

      if you didnt replace it with a clear filter, with thesame thickness, you will get focus problems with your camera.

      Not to mention now his sensor is completely naked. So when you get "sensor dust" it's actually ON the sensor. Very bad.

    What filter do you have and where can I get it?

  • @awesomefeldmanfamily
    @awesomefeldmanfamily 6 років тому

    What about just taking off the original filter inside the camera, and instead of putting on the ir lens inside the camera just get a lens outside the camera? Would that work?

    • @angelisone
      @angelisone 6 років тому

      Dovi Feldman, you are referring to removing the Bandpass Filter out.
      Then sensor (camera body) & lens calibrations are now fully off.
      AF will be out.
      Long exposures are needed.
      Pushing that ASA/ISO will increase noise.
      If you use R72 filter in front of the lenses, you won't see anything in finder/LCD.

      Yes, you would have a full-spectrum camera, then. But it is recommended to put something on the sensor to protect it, for example a cover slip (thin glass). You would need to use a 400-700nm bandpass filter on the lens to take usual VIS images. Or a Baader-U-Filter and an appropriate lens to take reflected UV images. Or a IR bandpass filter for IR images.

    Why didn't you put it on the Nikon D850?
    My ATG Sony A7s III and ATG Sony A7r III were done by ATG.
    And I've purchased some ATG Gold IR TTL speedlites & strobes.

    can i change the filter of nkon d5200

  • @gur262
    @gur262 7 років тому

    Can i just put no glass whatsoever on there or will the Sensor then be too easily damaged?

    • @Ni5ei
      @Ni5ei 5 років тому

      You can, but because of the refractive index of the removed filter glass your focal point will change so you will need to bring the sensor closer towards the lens in order to be able to focus to infinity.

    please how can I know the exact dimensions of the infrared filter, especially the thickness buying directly from SCHOTT? Do I have to open the camera and measure the original filter with a caliper? If it is 1mm or 2mm it will affect the focus. I appreciate who can help.

      An exact thickness is only important when you are using fast lens or high shutter speed.
      VIS & IR wavelengths are not the same.
      That is why many beginners & amateurs use cheap cameras for mods.
      Then some will complains that they can't use it to take normal photos.
      Wagner Cintra, if you have cheap lenses (without DOF/focus scales/Feet & Meter) then crank the lens beyond F8.0.
      If you have the Sony A7r III and soon available Sony A7s III (model can be changed once set in production), then the ATG's Eye Tracking can be used in manual focusing in EVF or LCD.
      Or you can use any manual lenses, like Hasselblad & Rolleiflex & Contax, Canon and Nikon, because many have IR marking on the lens.
      You first focus for VIS (normally as in taking regular images), then turn lens to ATG's IR RED DOT.

    I find too many rude people today when someone is using his or her time out helping people or giving out suggestions.
    They make remarks as the video being too long.
    Or in a rush going out to buy a latest camera, yet they don't know about photography.
    Except RAW and closed the door and cheap using Photoshop.

    It's a shame you didn't had a good framing in many parts of the tutorial because I wasn't able to see what was going on.

    Very nice and passionate tutorial. Thank you. I would like to ask you - do you think that in IR photography only the red catching pixels of the CCD play role ? Which is that it makes your camera's effective Mega pixels only one third from its original size. Thank you .
