In this video I make an abstract painting with acrylic paint on a 80x80cm canvas.
It is a rather geometrical painting, rather simple to realize.
The shadows made with the masking tape allow to give an impression of depth and different levels in the painting.

I've been going through UA-cam and looking for inspiration and have been watching your videos. Since watching other exciting artists and admire there amazing work. Yours stand out the most. I truly enjoy the way you blend your colors and separate them by masking. I've collected some of my own supplies and yet to begin. Although, I will continue to get more inspiration from watching you work on the canvases you make come alive. Thank you and keep doing such great and amazing work.
I love to paint but I have a hate/hate relationship with masking tape! Either my lines aren’t crisp because the paint goes under the tape or the tape pulls off the layer of pain under it. I need a masking tape tutorial lol
The tape hes using is the brand name called FROG TAPE. The yellow kind is made not to pull up any layers of paint underneath. Its definitely worth getting!

This may be a stupid question, if so I apologize. Do you let each application of color dry before adding another color or between masking?
He would absolutely have to wait until it dries. Total guess, but it's probably one of the reasons he uses acrylic. If you don't use a huge amount it will dry within a few minutes and you can use a blow dryer or a medium to help it dry faster.

I've tried this shading technique a few times now and it never ends well. Tell me the secret.
The technique is called dry brushing. It's all about controlling how much paint is loaded on the brush and the amount of water you use to dilute it(very little). The brush looks like it's full but there's actually very little paint there and he's just scrubbing a small amount onto the canvas.

Just love your paintings and so glad I got your DVD. Can you tell me how long after painting an area do you leave it before taking the masking tape off? Thank you.
Depends on the paint. Very watery or liquids, are better off by drying out fully.
But thicker paint or acrylics, can dry for a few minutes and be taken of, while not being fully dry. It doesn't leak or spread that much.

I believe its a Princeton Catalyst Wedge. You can get them in different shapes and sizes on Amazon. I have 3 and love them.

j'aime beaucoup ce tableau mais la façon dont le déroulement est filmé (plan par dessus) fait que, parfois, on a du mal à comprendre où sont les traits ou les dégradés et il faut regarder l'ensemble pour comprendre.....
Do you wait till the paint dries before you use the scotch?

Cc John quand tu applique la couleur pour les transparences utilises tu un medium ou de l'eau. J'ai un medium pour glacis mais je trouve que ça colle et laisse des traces. As yu une astuce pour ça merci pour ta réponse et bravo pour ton travail
