The audio was missing from the actual recording (you're hearing what was on the tape). I'm not sure if the glitch was on Videon's end, or the person who recorded this.

Would there have been a Stingray-style music service back then, or was it all in-house? I remember not hearing music on it one late night many, many years ago.

It has to have been in-house. I found some stuff from 1997 and the sound is incredibly muffled, like it was on one of those old background music machines that Techmoan would review. And the tape was in HiFi, so it was definitely on Videon's end.

In those days if they didn't just use random tracks off new age, smooth jazz, and other sorts of instrumental albums they would have used music from music library companies. Library companies offer music that can be used for TV, movies, commercials etc. for a single one time fee per track, instead of having to pay royalties for each airing like you're supposed to do with commercially released songs.
