Honestly, I'm glad they cut this out. I think having the animals talk would make the movie too cartoony to be taken seriously; and Flit, Meeko, and Percy have enough charm and personality as silent characters.
Cure Hana yea but red feather would be the most funniest and cutest character in the movie even tho I never watched it I wish they never cutted this out
The animation in this test is by Chris Buck (Percy) and Nik Ranieri (Red Feather) . In the final film Nik Ranieri was the lead animator on Meeko , while Chris Buck was the lead animator on Percy.
This character would have been my favorite, but the version that resulted is good even without him (but I love his design so much, he is cartoony like I love)
Personally, I probably would have liked seeing/hearing the animals talk in Pocahontas. But in a way, I'm happy they didn't go through on it. And I actually LOVE Disney movies where animals can talk.
This would've been cool to have, I mean Redfeather seems like a jolly character, and Percy with a snooty British accent is funny. But at the same time, I do get why they wanted to do this change. Still a great piece of animation history right here.
To be honest, it would be REALLY cool if someone cleaned up the animation, added a background, colorized it and uploaded the finished product onto UA-cam. 😊
It's too bad that we never got to see the animals talking in Pocahontas (especially because I can imagine in my mind, Redfeather voiced by John Candy, and I know that he would've owned every scene he was in), but maybe it was for the best, given Candy's early death, and the fact that even if the movie isn't the best of its kind and has not aged very well, it was a more serious movie, than a comedic one.
It's not just legend that it was John Candy; it actually was. Several sources confirm this. Most of the dialogue was already recorded. What isn't overtly clear is whether the scenes were cut mostly because of Candy's passing, or because the decision had been made to make Pocahontas a more serious film.
Redfeather was going to be the comical character but they removed him entirely once John Candy died of a heart attack. After that they decided to remove all dialogue from animals since they wouldn't have that character to work off of and decided a more serious tone would be appropriate for the film.
I think after they replaced Redfeather with Flit and Meeko they decided that talking animals would totaly destroy any mood they were trying to create with the serious theme.
@@JosephRailwayStudios2000 Yes. Candy voiced Redfeather in the demo here but he died before any more lines for Redfeather could be recorded. This was why Redfeather was cut from the film and replaced by Meeko. It was also the reason too why the makers decided the animals in the film shouldn't talk.
Also, I believe Cinderella tried to let all the animals talk. They decided to just go with the mice because it would have taken attention away from the main story too much.
Yeah, they scrapped Redfeather because John Candy died. It's sad, but it's kinda nice that they scrapped him instead of replacing the voice actor. John Candy was pretty unique.
It can be found on the special features of the Laserdisc, according to animator Nik Ranieri. Nik himself uploaded the undubbed footage on his Facebook account in 2014, featuring Stephen Fry as Percy, and Redfeather voiced by archival audio of John Candy in Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
Omg Disney in pocahontas’ 25th anniversary make the animals talk and put Redfeather back in.Please I never asked you anything!!Ok maybe a thing or two like a pocahontas 3 to change the ending of that sequel that doesn’t exist.
This is a movie where talking animals made sense. This character could have provided a lot of much needed fun and comic relief. But they were too busy grooming the film to win a best picture award at the Oscar's. As a result Pocahontas is a sincere effort, but it is boring and lacks fun. Which is part of the reason its reception is so mixed.
Percy was almost going to be played by Richard E. Grant who was in Withnail and I and played General Pryde in Rise of Skywalker. Even though he didn't voice Percy, he did end up voicing the villain in Corpse Bride.
Actually, from what i gathered, pocahontas was gonna be a more light-hearted film, but after beauty an the beast got a best picture nod, jefferey kaztenberg forced the movie to be a drama, so it can be recognized. unfortuntely, it made the movie more pretentious. Good, but pretentious.
Honestly, I'm glad they cut this out. I think having the animals talk would make the movie too cartoony to be taken seriously; and Flit, Meeko, and Percy have enough charm and personality as silent characters.
Cure Hana but.... there was a talking tree
Same
Brandon Spain pity that the film was apparently criticized for its questionable lack of focus on its TONE
Cure Hana yea but red feather would be the most funniest and cutest character in the movie even tho I never watched it I wish they never cutted this out
Actually talking animals are more realer than you think since when animals vocalise, they sound as if they are having a dialogue
I will never look at Percy the same way again after hearing him talk.
Rest in Peace John Candy, in Heaven!
Shawn Brunner Amen. John Candy was an awesome American actor and a great comedian. Plus, he was hilarious.
@@willrobinson3662 Canadian actor, not American.
Well another reason why is because well, thanksgiving, I think we all know where this could have gone

I would love to see this version of Pocahontas
Sometimes the animals can say more by not talking. I mean look at the movie Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron. Epic emotions.
I wished Redfeather wasn't deleted. I would've loved him very much, even if it meant that it wouldn't be voiced by John Candy
"I'm a Mog! Half-man, half-dog! I'm my own best friend!"
I'm a Murkey! Half man-half turkey! I'm my own Thanksgiving dinner!T
😁
Percy: wait, my luggage!
Red Feather: *whimpering*
Personally, I probably would have liked seeing/hearing the animals talk in Pocahontas. But in a way, I'm happy they didn't go through on it. And I actually LOVE Disney movies where animals can talk.
Even with John Candy, I am glad they didn’t have the animals talk. At least in this case.
Percy: I take it you're some sort of...bird
Redfeather: That's the understatement of the year
We Wish Percy, Meeko & Flit Could Speaking Voices Some Points.
I would have liked to have seen this Redfeather character, mostly
cuz Im big fan of John Candy.
hes dead.

Tho Percy doesn’t talk in the film, this was how I imagined he might. Also, Rest In Peace, John candy.
This voice for Percy sounds like the original voice for Wiggins (see deleted scene entitled "Early Wiggins").
James Miller it was Richard E. Grant.
Igad! Percy speaks!
And he reminds me of Stewie Griffin when he does too!

It had better representation of Native Americans than Peter Pan, though.
John Candy was slated to voice Redfeather (the turkey), but when he died, they re-thought the role of the animals and whether they should speak.
It's not just legend that it was John Candy; it actually was. Several sources confirm this. Most of the dialogue was already recorded. What isn't overtly clear is whether the scenes were cut mostly because of Candy's passing, or because the decision had been made to make Pocahontas a more serious film.
Is the recording extant? Is it in the legendary Disney vault? To whom would I have to contact to listen to this lost legend's larynx?
In fact, John Candy previously appeared in another Disney animated classic The Rescuers Down Under, which was also directed by Mike Gabriel.
@@indyreno2933 And too apears in Cool Runnings other Disney's film
And Russell Means voiced Powhatan in Pocahontas. Russell Means appeared in Candy's last film Wagons East as the Chief.
Both.
This is very interesting! Thank you for posting.
Would of been great for a spin off.
Kinda makes me wonder what it would've been like if John Candy had still voiced Meeko.
Man, Percy would have annoyed me more if he spoke. D:
Good thing they cut him out, and I think Meeko was enough comedy relief for the movie. :D
That actually looks awesome!

This was after John Candy died?

Although it would've great to hear John Candy voice the turkey.
This would work for a spinoff
He looks and sounds like an animal version version of Ani (Darth Vader) from the Starkid musical...
I love deleted scenes too!
I wonder who's voicing Percy?
If you ask me, those lines were from another john candy movie planes, trains and automobiles
So, does this mean someone was actually paid and took the time to say all of percy's lines just to have them all removed for the entire film?
It's like a situation you'd see on Family Guy. I love it!
That is so not John Candy, that’s Corey Burton.
Awesome deleted scene
Hilarious scene, the turkey reminds me of the more modern day disney
I would have taken anything John Candy over Flit and Meeko, personally.
All the dialogues of animals eventually scrapped
I think that this character would have make the film little more funny
I had heard of this character and it's amazing to see that the character lasted that long into the process. Where did you find this?

damn the movie would have been a lot more kid-friendly if he stayed
It would feel unrealistic if the animals talked because this film is suppose to be realistic and grounded.
So are we just gonna brush over that THERE'S A TALKING TREE!?!
Am i the only one who thinks Redfeather sounds more like Dan Aykroyd in this test
Sort of, but that's Corey Burton's voice.
@@archelaus1598 That makes much more sense
Is that Jeff Bennett as Redfeather?
no that's John Candy
@@knottyorchid1212 Corey Burton
@MagicEmperor Yeah even if he only had a handful of lines. Would have been great.
So the animals were supposed to talk originally? Kind of glad they scrapped the idea- animals talk in all the movies
For some reason, Redfeather to me looks like he could've been voiced by Chris Farley.
I can't imagine...

Exactly -- I think fans of the film are too sensitive to critiques like this, it DEFINITELY had some problems to work out
It was mixed because of the racial tones put in the film too. It was also mixed cause they thought it's dark in many areas
who was redfeather's supervising animator I wonder
I think it was Nik Ranieri, who ultimately animated Meeko (the character who replaced Redfeather).
Jordan Briskin meeko replaced redfeather could you pass that along to another friend of mine
MrGabeanator Well, I'll see if I can...
Jordan Briskin thanks heres his youtube channel @electricdragon505
I wonder who's play Percy?
Probably Danny Mann, who was the same one who did his dog vocal effects.

thank god john smith was in this animation xD *or else i wouldn't of watched it*
