Sounds like what hit Larry Bird so hard was a combination of things. The game..... leaving college....leaving his friends to go out for the unknown. He had no idea what awaited him in the NBA with the Celtics! I never knew that he left state and that his brother Mark went back with him so he would stay in college!
I see the deciding factor for Larry retiring. It's not because of his back. Even though the average player it'd have shut down many years prior. Larry could deal with the pain. But he realized he was no longer going to be able to "improve his game" so he hung it up. Legend

Great video = I liked the Rick Robey story about the Chicago cheerleaders buying the Boston players beers the night before the game and Larry's comment after his team won = lol.

After the NCAA final and before smashing his pointer finger, Bird played in the Pizza Hut All-Star Invitational.
I guess it was an opportunity for college players to show what they had before the draft. 🤷🏻♀️ Bird didn't need to play, of course, but had promised friends who worked at Pizza Hut that he would. So he did. Note: he has a broken left thumb. He broke it earlier in the playoff series. He never mentions it.
