I’ve always loved the unwritten respect between umps and catchers. Umps will always dust off the plate or walk out to the pitcher to give them some time, same for catchers going out to the pitcher if an ump gets hit.

It’s an interesting dynamic between catchers and umpires. I do those same things even in youth baseball because I want those young men and women to learn this respect and pass it on. And you’re right - it could be me on the very next pitch!

Baseball weighs what, 5 oz or 140grams approx, doing 90-100mph. I don't really care how much padding is in your facemask, taking that to the chin, or anywhere in the face really is gonna ring your bell.
The thing that gets me is the complete lack of ability to protect yourself.

I coached baseball for years and I would say the average catcher took 1-2 fastballs off the balls and several to the mask a year. I raced MX for years and was NEVER 100% physically and I knew every race could be my last (and then it was) Going into a cage to punched silly by a world class athlete. It's a different breed. I’m sure each and every one of those catchers woke up to a headache the next morning… that said, the one where the ball got stuck in the mask seemed funny but was probably terrifying for the catcher.

Crazy that these guys don't have more neck protection. Some of them still don't have the instinct to reflexively tuck their chin when the ball approaches.

If something hits you in the head area and knock you down (even if doesn't make direct contact with your body), you should be forced to leave the game. Concussions are not something to take likely.

What i realized is when the catcher gets hit, they intend to fall over, it seems that they get hit so hard it knocks them back.

Every one of these impacts should be checked by the team trainer. One of the dimwitted announcers mentioned that the catcher there had taken another foul ball off the mask just the night before. What we now know about TBIs tells us that a concussive event (especially if one has not healed from it) makes it much more likely that a person will have further and more dangerous concussions. Hopefully we won’t see any catchers with CTE down the road.

I know both teams have medical personnel etc , but you would think the average person after he swings and realizes it has smoked the catcher would check on his fellow major leaguer even though it is the opponent maybe I’m different , I know we are playing against you but I don’t wish injury on nobody

It's honestly disappointing to see that it back like this and how a majority of the time they don't assist or check on them (granted, they could say something to them we don't see but only those two seemed to physically check on the catchers).
