Yes, Askeladd has spend his life looking for a Messianic-like figure like King Arthur to help save his people. It's why he was genuinely willing to follow Thors in episode 4 and why he now bows to Canute, who is one his own quest to save humans from war, bondage, and suffering. Interestingly enough within the show, this all occurs to the backdrop of the Messiah being prophesized to return around 1000 AD among the Christians and Ragnarok believed to be drawing near among the Vikings.
Its crazy that Thorkels weakspot is the same exact spot where Thors hit him. Maybe Thors hit was so strong that Thorkell never recovered.

I thought it was because no one could reach Thorkell's face so he didn't expect that hit... "surprise attack" was very effective haha
They didn't really animate that hit with enough impact. A bit unfortunate.

@@jamesliggins891 The easiest way to knock someone out, is hitting them in the jaw or behind the ear. This is how almost all knock outs occur in professional fighting.
Well, Avalon is not Vinland for sure. It is the fabled land described in the legends concerning King Arthur (identified with the fictional character of Lucius Artorius Castus, Askeladd's ancestor), but nobody thought it might have been reached by anyone in life. Vinland was the Norse name for part of North America, a real place reachable by sea.
It is however true that in the show Vinland represents something else, at least for Thorfinn. For him (episode 8), Vinland is a dreamland of peace. This is based on the account Thors made to the dying Slav slave in the first episode, more than the first-hand accounts made by Leif. Thus, in a way, Vinland became to Thorfinn something alike the fabled land of the Welsh legends, Avalon.
But, in one of the next episodes you will find the real message hidden in the concept of reaching Vinland.

"Somewhere not here" is also the name of the main OST of the show if I am not mistaken
I think it is because he is so tall and strong, that he has received a hit there maybe just a few times
Most of martial arts always told that the impact for the chin can make brain move and if it powerful enough it can make you flinched or fainted.

Pretty smart of Askeladd to admit at that moment to Canute that he killed Ragnar when everyone is moving on to the next goal.
It was to prove his resolve to Canute and holding his sword out is to say his life is now in his hands for the end goal
he was willing to let Canute killing him. He had nothing to live for anymore than putting Canute on the throne. Also I think he did respect Ragnar and regret killing him.
Letting things be water under the bridge is something Thorfinn is notably not able and not willing to do....

I don't think he was willing nor planning on dying anytime soon. This scene actually demonstrates Askeladd special talent, he's able to tell how a man is by looking at his face. That's why he laughed histerically just before admitting he killed Ragnar. At the very moment he started lauging he knew his end goal was going to be achieved. He knew he could embody Artotius' return by saving Wales with the non-agression treaty because he knew Canute wasn't going to back down and that he'd be able to defeat King Sweyn. He also knew he was going to act according to what he said, he knew Canute wouldn't kill him because it wasn't according to his beliefs
I think the main difference between Thors and Canute is that Thors was a True Warrior.
Canute is a True King.
Askeladd has been "waiting" for the Hero Artorius who embodies both but he and the world can't really wait for much longer.
Thorkel did join Canute in real life. It's unknown what caused him to switch back from England's side.

I think the most interesting thing about the whole Thorfinn/Askeladd dynamic is that at the end of the day, if you really think about it, Thorfinn is no better than Askeladd. God knows how many people he's killed and how many kids don't have fathers now because he only cared about earning his duels? As you said, in the end he's not any "better" as a person lol but he's a kid so it makes us feel like there might be hope for him

@@angelbedolla347 Askeladd at some point had a similar mentality than Thorfinn and nobody was there to prevent him from becoming a monster, not even his own mom, and nobody learns to feel empathy out of nowhere. Thorfinn can redeem himself but that's because Thors told him he has no enemies, we've seen he dreams with his dad and how much he hates war, and Thors redeemed himself because Helga gave him a purpose, if it wasn't for her he would still be another killing machine like Thorkell. Had Askeladd found a way to keep Wales out of war without the need of conflict, he would've made a family there and possibly become a true warrior as well.
Also people usually miss that everything Askeladd do has a purpose : Protecting his homeland. He isn't a sadist, he isn't doing it for fun... He is slowly building power to protect his own homeland. It's easy to see him as a bad man because we see him actually on the front, doing the killing... But it's nothing different from what kings did at the time. Just more remotely. If anything, it's just more "honest".
He isn't necessarily "better" but Askeladd is the biggest reason Thorfinn is who he is in season 1. That is undeniable.
Askeladd and Thorfinn give me Silco and Jinx vibes a little. Particularly with the "I'm responsible for killing your dad (although the problem is that you were there and messed things up) and then raising you in a life of crime and now we have a strange relationship" vibes lol.
The relationship between Askeladd and Thorfinn was always destined to be very complicated, but on some level yes, I think you can say that Askeladd cares for Thorfinn, in a way he knows how. He's literally keeping his death sigil right by his side. He knows Thorfinn can and most likely would kill him someday. He could have killed Thorfinn so many times to just get rid of the problem, but he never does. I don't think you could ever say Askeladd "loves" Thorfinn, and certainly it's not purely altruistic/genuine, but he certainly has more affection for him than anyone else in his life save maybe Bjorn.
But it doesn't really matter because Askeladd will always be the person who killed Thorfinn's father.
I think he mostly regret killing Thors and wanted to repay him by teaching Thorfinn.

I love how over the top Thorkell is yet he can still have a moment like this "What's important to a warrior is the soul... and where it lies."
I told ya'll Thorkell was best boy. Yeah sure he is a badass, brutal and fun character. But he also has depth to him, that we didn't expect when we first saw him. And yet even in his deep moments, he always stays in character. Even Ashkeladd, who we had pretty much figured out in the first half of the series, to be a backstabbing scoundrel, is currently being really sincere about putting his life on the line for Canute.

Something that I noticed here is that Thorfinn has not bent the knee or sworn allegiance to Canute, despite his Target swearing to the Prince. It intrigues me for things to come in the second season.

Thorkell's weakness is that he's got a glass jaw. Being so tall I doubt anyone gets many opportunities to hit him around the head so its understandable he wouldn't be used to it. Great reaction as always and really enjoyed the discussion afterwards.

I hope you react to Golden Kamuy. That show is tailor made for your tastes. It's somewhere between FMAB and Vinland, as it is a historic military/adventure show, featuring a great cast of characters, a tone that's more light hearted than Vinland, but still serious when it wants to be. Also it's an interesting look into japanese culture and history from the pre-world war days. And it's not heavy on fanservice at all.

See the difference between this and DEMON slayer is that vinland saga don't need pretty animation to captivate the viewer. It has a great plot with well defined characters. The only thing demon slayer has is the pretty colors and the fluid animation lol

I have read the manga and I didnt feel anything from it lmao. The studio made a good job tho animating it but story wise it is not that good like people say.
