This review is fantastic so far!! My problem with diversity is that is that it's shallow instead of progressive. At one point "diversity" meant having people from all walks of life with points of view like a jury selection. They might have their differences but eventually they'd find common ground and learn from one another. At one point "diversity" was pushed to mean marginalized voices who weren't getting heard in the creative role. That's fair. It can be hard to write a female character if every writer's a man and they have no perspective of how women think. Eventually "diversity" became a codeword for "No Men" or even "No Straight White Men". They all have the same life experience. They're not selected for their qualities or even in spite of their qualities just to meet a quota. The only thing diverse about the HGS staff is their hair color.
"Diverse", I swear whenever I hear that word thrown around, it raises red flags. Just because your group is filled to the brim with women, doesn't make them "diverse", it's actually the opposite, but I guess they wouldn't understand that, it's a term they use for a different meaning nowadays. Besides, what does having a "diverse" team have anything to do with the quality of your show? It has absolutely nothing to do with it, and if you're trying to sell people on it, the last thing they care to hear, is how "diverse" the team working on it is. If anything, the only time I'd care on who's working on some form of media/entertainment, is to reassure me that I know what this person/team is capable of outputting because of their previous works(see it all the with games).
There's literally nothing wrong with having an all woman writing team. But when a show points out that fact, it's a massive red flag. No one bats an eye at an all man creative staff, and likewise, the reverse should be treated as normal. Shoving it in people's faces screams virtue signaling. It tells me they don't really care about "diversity", they just want to pander to the "woke" Tumblr crowd, and have absolutely nothing to offer in the plot itself.
Not gonna lie, with all the coverage I’ve seen of this shit, yours is probably the most honest and brutal yet. I’m all for it, I eagerly await the next parts of this series. Rip this thing a new one the same way it ripped the people who watched it a hole in our IQ levels.
I'm an artist, the trailer in 2018 is what pissed me off, for a NEW studio, they sure think they are better than other established studios that has been around for years. I didn't like that, so ignorant and condescending to animators, so I'm very critical of the show because of them bragging.

My favorite is the implication that there’s no significant women in the anime industry, when some of the most successful anime were created by women. It just so happens to be that those creators are *Japanese* women. It’s more white women insisting only THEY can be saviors of an industry.
To make a story when it's Fantasy, one keep the real world political staff out ( except the politics of that world with proper fitting for that scenario ), Gender bender stuff keep minimum & cartoons/anime supposed to be an escape of the reality without worries
I read an manga once where they had a trans person who was givin a item to force them to be the opposite of their actual gender (male) but it was only brought up once during the characters back story other wise you would never know if your gonna do shit like that that should be how it's done
The thing that will always bother me is when people try to make an actual show with different people. That being race, skin tone, sexuality or anything of those lines people need learn how to just make it NOT the main part that drives the story! The character can have those characteristics and not be their whole personality.
I think what pisses people off the most about this so called anime, is that Crunchyroll not only stole the money from their users but stole the money that was supposed to go to Japanese creators and gave it to these awful creatures that call themselves human. But I'm curious about is how could the creator, Raye allow his creation be this badly desecrated? Did he give the crew his feedback and disapproval regarding the quality only for him to be brushed aside and ignored? Or is he too weak minded and afraid to say anything?
This show feels like someone took a first draft of a *insert magical school show here* fanfic and ran with it. Like they had ideas for the "important events" but they are flying by their ass on everything else. And i could forgive that if the animation didnt look like a something an animation student would turn in as a "show your progress" mid term assignment
bruh I don’t get it I know people get hurt but it’s so stupid for these writers to just be sexist against all men because of whatever… I literally adore my boyfriend and i see him as a better person than me a lot of the time, no one’s CHARACTER is defined by their gender of race
I love how arrogant the creators are, basically saying how much better they are than “any other studio”. Clearly they’ve never watched an anime. I suggest they check out Mushoku Tensei by Studio Bind and try to keep that same arrogance.
No I'm pretty sure they have, they can watch but won't change anything about them, heck actually are arrogant arses to make anime creators seem inferior, they know this and their idea of heroism is actually corrupted & slimy to us.
High Guardian Spyce is basically another Teen Titans Go. It's basically a Teen Titans Go version of My Hero Academia, Adventure Time and Steven Universe
If they thought THIS show had weird stuff, then they've never seen any of the real freaky anime. I could make a long long list of genuine stuff with so much more weirdness to them and I guarantee you, everyone would agree to each of them.
Draco Malfoy, eh? In addition to his nice suits, rich-boy haircut, and sneer, in the shots provided he also looks tired, worn-out, unhealthily pale. And when one watches the later movies (or, better, reads the last two books), it'll become apparent why - his family's hosting their cruel, megalomaniac 'Dark Lord' with a penchant for throwing around _torture curses_ if his cronies fail or upset him. Draco never had the guts to be a terrorist; he was forced into serving Voldemort due to his father. One time, Draco was tasked with murdering Dumbledore, but couldn't bring himself to do it. Another time, a few other cronies had captured Harry Potter (and Hermione and Ron), who had disfigured his face, and Draco was brought in to identify him (which would've led to Harry's torture and death, no doubt), and yet Draco...didn't. He lied, said it wasn't Harry. Sure, Draco was stuck-up and rude in the first five books, brought up with anti-muggle prejudice due to his father (and likely his father's allies and acquaintances), but as is visible on the actor, he's exhausted, mentally stressed, and needs help.
these femmists talk about how creative the show is and how much heart it has, when the invader zim pilot episode (which was a sales pitch to nickelodeon) has way more effort, heart, and creativity put into it.
Less than 2 minutes in and you already hit the nail on the head for why I even bother watching anything HGS related, like this video. The whole series is just so fascinatingly... bad. I'm not here to hate on it, if anything, the more I learn about it the more I see the potential the show had. Like many people, I agree that some of the character could've been amazing if handled better. Snapdragon, Amaryllis, Olive, and even Mandrake to name a few. But they're overshadowed by poor writing, stiff characterization, odd pacing, choppy animation, etc. etc. etc. It's kind of really disappointing at this point to think what could've been. Anyways, I'm going to go back to the video, so far I'm interested in what's being said.
I wasn’t gonna point it out but after seeing her ‘replace all white characters with non white characters’ tweet-Um, why does the ‘trailer’ that’s showing their staff seem to be showing all white females?
Dude how can MLP have all girls (mostly) and it works totally fine, but some other people can’t for the life of them string a female strong plot for the life of them as if there were no examples to draw from.
Serious question. Why do so many garbage shows have this bland art style and eye bleed inducing color palette? Did all these people go to the same art school or something? And if we shut that school down, will we stop getting shows like this?
Honestly at first when I saw the god awful trailer, I wasn't even upset at how they just made it only seem like women worked on this show, I felt upset because for one second seeing this trailer, I never saw one person who looked like me working on the art or animation, being a voice actor, working as a editor, a producer, or hell even ANY job in the studio. Granted I am black. And the fact that I JUST found out the weeks when this was still out with 12 episodes ready, I just found out Thyme's voice actor was a black woman. I felt a little frustrated at how in general, the fact that Raye and Thyme's VA were the ONLY people of color in this studio from what I know (Though Raye rather has a lighter skin tone)
If anyone wants a GOOD show that involves a magic school and have GOOD character designs as well as a diverse cast of characters who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community then go watch The Owl House. The show is actually really well made and it definitely draws you in alongside of making a show that both adults and children can relate to, they draw out the characters so they feel like real people and not some blank slate even down to building the romance which happens between Amity and Luz really well. It's also very open with the fact you're watching a show which is kind of a cliche and makes fun of itself by having Luz being the girl who loves magic/fantasy media. It's very open on that fact, seriously I literally only watched the beginning of it and got a very good idea of what Luz's personality just by looking at her plus the animation is AMAZING

Thanks for the great explanation with Malfoy (Potterhead here) I suspect there are no differences here because being different is „bad“. It would mean one person could be inferior to another person in there which would destroy the „harmony“. Because people that are „open minded“ always get along very well. After all it’s about „the others being bad“. After all „inclusive“ actually means only for a specific group of people.
You don’t need diversity in the team to have diversity in the characters. I am working alone (I am searching à drawer or an animator but I can’t find one :( ) on a cartoon/comic idea. And in it, I decided to put a lot of diversity. There are white, black, mixed characters (I don’t know what is the right word in english since I am not english). There are also christian and muslim character (There is also a jew character but she is secondary, here, I am listing the main character). The story take place in France but some characters have Syrian, Italian, Scottish or/and Cameroonian origins. There is a diabetic character as there are characters with asthma, myopia or characters with anger issues, hydrophobia, addiction problems etc… They are all from different places and different families. One is gay, two are lesbian, one is ace, one is bi and one is trans. The others are either cis, straight or questioning (since the main characters are pre teens). But the difference is that, for example, I didn’t create a gay character for the only purpose of having a gay character. I gived them, all different backstories, realistic but unique personalities, hobbies, purpose in life. I also worked on the relationship with others, trying to find their common points to see when they would agree and when they would disagree. There 24 characters I finished. It took me almost a year. And I am still not done because there are still some background characters I need to work on. I agree, this is very hard to create a good character to make the story good. But this is so fun and also very important. Now, I am searching an artist who would agree to make a comic or an animation of this. And maybe he will give more ideas for the characters identity. But here, in this show, it seems like they didn’t work on it. Sorry for my very bad english (plus, my corrector is annoying…)
Raye Rodriguez, the creator, is a man just FYI, which is one reason there's a lot of trans related things in the story! though I really wish it had been done better and been far less self-insert-y

Can confirm, as someone who has never seen nor read Harry Potter, I had the right reading of Draco Malfoy's personality from his design alone. Seriously, I've had no prior knowledge of the character.
I was really surprised when I saw men in high guardian spice because you know , the creator tweeted kill all men .. I mean like yeah that’s weird right ?
Kate is not the Creator of HGS, just its writer
Yeah, the only nice male character is professor caraway, a trans man, which in itself is transphobic despite the LGBTQ+ people on the team :/

This comment made me looking up the german translations of the names. If I ever watch this in German, I will laugh my ass off.
And then be weirded out because these aren't good names in German.
Wow I thought Sage was a hint to “mage”, sad to know the only meaning for their names is to make the tittle make sense
As a portuguese speaker, these names also sounds funny in Portuguese.
Rosemary = Alecrim (there's a song, in English is roughly translated to "Golden Rosemary", which is used to describe a narcissist)

Parsley = Salsa
Thyme = Tomilho

Speaking of design, a UA-camrs wife thought that Rosemary’s mom was a guy like a handsome prince
Still when I hear Rosemary I see Rosemary from shadows house and not this walking pink haired sadist………I mean, Maryrose and Rosemary’s arc literally was:
Maryrose: so what is our backstory Kate, I think you understand now why we did all this, but we lose and we will accept death. But I hope what you will make things what we didn’t, because you’re a lot more talented than we are.

9:53 You know it’s bad when not a SINGLE CHARACTER stands out when the entire animated cast is lined up. The statues in Dr Stone had more personality and individuality conveyed through character design and no dialogue than this piece of crap
The creator is actually a trans man.
And they voiced the trans teacher.
Which is why the only male character that isn't a villain is trans.
And the reason why the the only male character that isn’t a villain is trans if because they hate males.
Did anyone noticed the fat pink haired woman said "100% female crew", while one of their member is a trans MAN???? So now mis gendering someone is ok if you are a woman?
I get the vibe the writers see him as woman lite instead of an actual man otherwise he wouldn't be put there
I've seen the style, and it reminded me of Steven Universe.
_I already don't like it._
Are you talking shit about my boy Steven.
As someone who won't watch SU because my major introduction to it was the mass bullying and near suicide of a fan artist for drawing the gems as light skinned humans (among other reasons but that's my major association)...

04:50 You don't get it! Their diversity comes from their wide variety of mental disorders. Hell, just look at their 100 % all female writer's room!
you know for a show with a very group that's suppose to be "diverse", they have alot of white women with crazy colored hair for a very "diverse" group
"Omg our team is so diverse!"
*cut to a shot of only specifically chubby white women with rainbow hair*
An immortal reminder that you make a good show FIRST, and a diverse show SECOND.
There’s more I bet…concidering it’s Part 1

i think there was going to be a couple men writing it but Kate killed them
as with RWBY, im gonna wait for fanfic, usually better then the actual show
Dont they need fans for fanfics?
Watch it for the animation errors funniest thing I’ve ever seen
The basically just want to be Steven Universe.
WANT
XD
This show feels like someone took a first draft of a *insert magical school show here* fanfic and ran with it. Like they had ideas for the "important events" but they are flying by their ass on everything else. And i could forgive that if the animation didnt look like a something an animation student would turn in as a "show your progress" mid term assignment
bruh I don’t get it I know people get hurt but it’s so stupid for these writers to just be sexist against all men because of whatever… I literally adore my boyfriend and i see him as a better person than me a lot of the time, no one’s CHARACTER is defined by their gender of race
i'm consuming this dudes content like my greyhound consumes his food
The head sometimes becomes super big and that is what really makes it weird.
I wasn’t gonna point it out but after seeing her ‘replace all white characters with non white characters’ tweet-Um, why does the ‘trailer’ that’s showing their staff seem to be showing all white females?
Really that transgender line is so dumb. It would have worked so much better if he just said "Yea...I was." and just leave it at that.
Dude how can MLP have all girls (mostly) and it works totally fine, but some other people can’t for the life of them string a female strong plot for the life of them as if there were no examples to draw from.
The title is called High Guardian Spice because the girls call their group Spice because of their names....but they are herbs not spices....
Serious question. Why do so many garbage shows have this bland art style and eye bleed inducing color palette? Did all these people go to the same art school or something? And if we shut that school down, will we stop getting shows like this?
Rwmember, This Caetoon was created by stealing the Money INTENDED to help the Japanese Animators.
Kate leth is talking hate about men and forgets the reason how she exists
Butch Hartman has a better reputation and better ideas than this show. Butch freaking Hartman!
Man..... u right. Despite everything Hartman, his shows still had more direction and cohesiveness than HGS.
Im coming back here just so i know that even if my own story might be cliche and bad, there's always something worse
Nah, if you’re not misogynist your story can’t be as bad! It may be cringy, but just read good books about psychology and you’ll be okay. Or watch good UA-cam videos. 10:28 and what’s literally my story’s beginning…….but then it goes to politics” drama and beheading because I love Tudors and I’m sadist-psycho in body of anime girl.

Out of all the High Guardian Spice commentary videos, this is my favorite.
I had a little hope on this show not gonna lie and now I have been imagining how the show would have be if it was made by actually talented people
Thanks for the great explanation with Malfoy (Potterhead here) I suspect there are no differences here because being different is „bad“. It would mean one person could be inferior to another person in there which would destroy the „harmony“. Because people that are „open minded“ always get along very well. After all it’s about „the others being bad“. After all „inclusive“ actually means only for a specific group of people.
This literally made me nostalgic for good animes from like the 2000s just to get the good quality back
You don’t need diversity in the team to have diversity in the characters.
There is a diabetic character as there are characters with asthma, myopia or characters with anger issues, hydrophobia, addiction problems etc…
They are all from different places and different families.
Not that it really matters, but that chick who spewed all that BS on twitter has stated recently she doesn't believe that shit anymore. Though it's likely she still believed it when the show was being made lol
She didn't really give a real apology - she just said critics don't understand that she was "tumblrpilled" at the time.
