      Breakers are showmen who are incentivized to exaggerate. They also reinforce and perpetuate exclusivity, like online gated communities, for their members and those who buy into their breaks. This can be appealing to some but in no way ruins the hobby of collecting trading cards. The concern I have about breakers is how so many of them emphasize the newest and latest product. This emphasis is unending. It seems to focus their members on always looking ahead, which unintentionally distorts the supply and demand of new trading card product.

    Sort of strange that PSA would announce you can’t share grader’s notes and at the same time announce you can now grade and send directly to auction on eBay. In this scenario, the person who ultimately ends up with the card won’t have any info on why it got the grade it got. Meanwhile, the submitter, who is selling the card and therefore doesn’t want it, will have the notes regarding the condition of a card they no longer own and won’t be able to pass that info along to the buyer of the card without violating PSA’s terms of service. Absolutely brilliant minds running things over there at PSA.

    I run a collectibles auction house mostly focused on stamps. Stamp certificates have grader notes already included as part of the basic service. A stamp certificate will say something like "US Stamp #1 Used 1847 5 cent Franklin with a small crease at top right, genuine in all repects" - I don't understand why a graded card doesn't say directly on the certification slab why it is graded as it is. The words will fit on the slab and would provide useful info to anyone involved that isn't the grading company.

    • @JunkWaxHero
      @JunkWaxHero  3 дні тому

      Yeah, or go to the cert on the website and see the grader notes.

  • @Michaeljamber
    @Michaeljamber 3 дні тому +4

    The reason why they don't want you to show and compare notes is that people will find a lot of cards graded that are a higher grade that maybe shouldn't be by comparing notes. Also your going to find a lot of mistakes or over graded and under graded cards. Then they will get caught with all there shannagines and get flooded with calls about why this or that got a better grade than another of the same card that got a lower grade. If you'll stop sending in cards to grade and let them know everybody is tired of hearing about all there problems they will have to fix all there BS problems. All there problems end up costing customers more money or losing money and with all this going on they will raise the cost. Always great info you put out mike.

    I’m not into breaking, but the hobby needs breakers to open the high dollar products in order for singles to reach the market.
    Definitely Panini is loading up hits to Backyard Breaks.
    I think if you submit cards to PSA and you only want a high grade, ask them not to slab the card unless it is a 10. Great solution to not needing to crack out a card. Plus PSA still gets the benefit of grading and not having to slab the card.
    Card shops need to put their valuable cards in a large safe at night. This is a shame.

    In regards to the eBay combined shipping issue, for me, as a long time seller, it is probably one of the top things that annoy me, because there are so many variables. So, what you brought up, is someone paying shipping on each item and not getting combined shipping. So, I urge people to contact a seller before purchasing multiple items and to ask them what the combined shipping cost would be. For me, if a customer has multiple items in their cart, I can't see that cart, and I can't send them an invoice, so in this case, I will either lower the shipping in the combined listings to reflect what the shipping cost will be, or I will create a separate listing for them with the items they want. The only way, that I can send someone an invoice, is if I have sent them offers on multiple items, and they accept those offers and wait to pay. Going back to your issue you address, when someone pays shipping on multiple items, I can reimburse them the differences, but this is annoying, because my 1099 that is reported to the government, includes all processed money, so if I refund or reimburse, I need to keep track of all of that, so I can deduct it against the 1099. I'm sure someone will say something different, but that is what I deal with.

    I don't like most of PSA's gimmicks. The grader notes situation is just a stupid situation that PSA created themselves. The PSA labeled machine in the casino is from an affiliate, not PSA. You get a small chance for a valuable slab, or you could get a $20 slab. "The house always wins!" I agree with you on "breakers" making prices go up. Thefts of all sorts have been increasing more and more, as inflation increases. That wall display is very cool looking. I am an artist and hope to sell some of my original art for that kind of money! I'm late to this, but that PSA vending machine seems problematic if it owned and operated by PSA and only gives out PSA 10s. It seems like a pretty classic conflict of interest for PSA: they are supposed to be an impartial arbiter of card condition, but since they are selling PSA 10s they will make more money if they have more PSA 10s, a fact that makes them no longer impartial. Then again, conflicts of interest are nothing new for our hobby (like the existence of the Beckett Marketplace when Beckett pricing still was the gold standard).

    I collect mostly UFC (some basketball too), and mostly autos. I'm able to buy autographed cards of legends of the sport like BJ Penn, Matt Hughes, Junior Dos Santos, Mark Coleman, etc. for $10-20 each. The all time greats like Andreson Silva, GSP, DC, etc. can be had for around $40. Without all the breakers opening up the product and getting these cards out there I think they'd be much more expensive.

    I had this old guy (well actually two, but the second just sat at a bench) waiting as well as I, for the panini guy to fill up the target aisle. When he is done and we are allowed into this area, the old guy went straight for the new prizm blasters. All of them! Even though it is prohibited at target. He looked at me and had the nerve to ask: do you want a couple? And “let me have two boxes”. He said those were the ones he needs for his shop. I’m almost 50 and felt like a little kid taken advantage. I’m new to cards and didn’t know the limit. But if this is happening at every target, Walmart, etc. then yes, someone is ruining the concept.

I try to get some of their parallels and auto's for my collection. It's much cheaper for me to just buy the Twins than for me to buy cases of the product(which I cannot afford). Generally the Twins are very cheap because they aren't a big market team like the Yankees. This year for 2024 Bowman with Walker Jenkins was a different story. @JunkWaxHero I know who doesn't know... PSA's customers! The people they supposedly support and keep them alive are the ones who are always left in the dark. Not being transparent (grader notes) and honest about their grading ("we never changed our standard"), not being consistent in grading and seemingly approving card cleaning, via grading submission groups/services, while banning people who do it for their own cards and seemingly giving higher grades to "special members/group submitters are just the current issues that PSA created. They think they deserve to remain #1 in value evaluation in the hobby, but their own actions will be the reason they fall or get dethroned. I will not shed one tear for their downfall.

    I'm not sure if ruining is the right word; but breakers are certainly souring the card experience for many rather than improving. Primarily raising wax cost on new products. It's very hard in modern basketball, to get hobby boxes to actually local card stores. Every store in town is out within 2 days of release. If Panini is allow one customer to get 30-40% of the allocation, something is wrong. I don;t know 100% if backyard is doing anything wrong, but its HIGHLY suspicious, they hit all these top tier basketball cards, with unfathomable odds. Specifically black prizm;s with large production runs.

    Nearly every breaker does some kind of repack. I also thought their business wouldn't affect my love of 90's actor auto cards. But on more than one occasion I've received cards that have repack seals on the top loader. From what I've been hearing repackers have been buying strong on singles, I know you mostly collect vintage, but it wouldn't be impossible that a repacker might list a desirable vintage card as a top prize for the repack. Would it then affect your side of the hobby? Think regardless of how you collect (to use Neo's example) the "ecosystem" of our hobby has been impacted. Inflation is more demand than supply. These companies make plenty for China yet they don't allocate hobby boxes for people like me who want to open my own box. Breakers like backyard are monopolizing a product by buying most of it. Breakers created a demand without a supply. Plenty of cards that's why cards don't go up in value. Super Breakers are a reality. The card industry is completely full of it with the greed and fake Inflation because people don't understand basic economics. I've been opening packs for 50 years and 2020 was the death of cards for the average opener. Breakers don't care about gambling laws and jurisdiction and legal definitions. PSA is a scam. They know nothing. All cards are perceived value. None of them have real value. I think people need to start asking how much do they make for China and how many autographs are they claiming these guys sign. No one can sign a name thousands of times without hurting your wrist. Companies that have been completely fraudulent in every aspect would definitely have an unwritten policy that they sell licensed autograph by proxy. It's all about perceived value and selling the lie. I love gambling but not on cards. I remember the don west days and ken goldin ripping people off on TV. I remember all the billions in fake memorabilia and how it combined with all the junk wax. People need to call out cards for what it has become, a convention of liars, scammers, and morons. The proof is there, no one makes money from investment into cards.

    I don't think one person or people can ruin the hobby. With all the good people in the hobby, I feel just fine. 33 years for me, and no plans of quitting. I don't care about lines on PSA cases. If I had some and they needed fixed, I would contact PSA. If another breaker scammed someone and I buy from them, I would move in and not buy from them again. It is no different how you should handle any adversity in life. Step back, take a deep breath and just think how to handle any situation. Don't rush to UA-cam, just handle it. Always good to share the experience to help others be aware. Clearly any and all Backyard Breaks past content did not effect them in a negative way because they are still in business and selling out breaks.

      I appreciate and respect this comment, but I have one question: so I shouldn’t do a UA-cam video calling out PSA and try to effect change when their slabs are faulty? Should no one question them?

      @@JunkWaxHero No, I think I also said in the comment that you should handle the issue and also share with us on UA-cam the findings, which is very helpful. Love when we post solutions or anything that can save someone money or a headache for the hobby. Every video on that slab complaint, skim through the comments. You can see all the hate by people which is the majority. People would rather do that over offering up some suggestions or solutions, that is what always troubles me the most.

    I love how people still question PSA decisions! Why wouldn't PSA allow screen shots??? Because PSA was, is, and will always be crooked as hell! All businesses have to be concerned about profit or they fail to exist. PSA ONLY cares about making money. They don't give a damn about the hobby or the collectors. FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST, PEOPLE, WAKE UP AND STOP USING PSA!!!

    I think I'm turning into "that guy", but I can't stand how interconnected PSA, Ebay, Fanatics, Goldin, and a select group of breakers are nowadays. It's just ripe for scandal when money changes hands for something you never physically hold (break ▶️grade ▶️list▶️sell)

    I just had a eBay seller who scams eBay I guess if seller don't except returns they can just refuse your request and eBay will pick up the bill and of course my luck I happen to stumble upon a seller like that I bought a card from him it looked really nice in the photo it shows up with a giant crease he's not responding to the refund request I left negative feedback his response was I don't need to deal with the return eBay will deal with it. pure scum

    I really don't care how much product they open; that's their 'out.'
    I believe it's clearly manipulation in the hobby. Look at the product produced vs. what's opened, the numbers aren't in their favor. Not just these 10 Wemby's, but also their past breaks. The odds are against them, big time.
    I also agree, in the sense, that you should buy into their breaks.. I'm not into that.. but it only makes sense.

      @@JunkWaxHero by the Card Companies. I truly believe they get privileges. The odds are against them and I don't think they open 30-40% of their product; that's quite a bit.. and possibly a manufactured number to appease and justify the 'hits' they get.
      I could be wrong, but it just doesn't make sense to me.

    1) I'm just tired of breakers screaming OMG over and over...and usually it's not even their card!
    2) Send me a case that is supposed to be uncrackable and me and my table (not chain) saw will prove you wrong.

    If someone just wants to make money they may be better off investing in stocks...the odds may be better than gambling with breakers or opening packs on their own. Understanding the stock market has more longevity than trying to buy and sell the sparkle 1 of 1 with huge transaction costs
