I have a 1950 I think map of Tahoe, before the airport was built there was a big fresh water marsh there. I wish I could have seen it.
Wait...they were going to build that monstrosity on the side of Mt. Talac??? I never heard of that old plan.
I was on Pope Beach when Harvey's Wagon Wheel was bombed by that guy who lost a lot of money there.

We lived on that meadow for 46 years before leaving Calif. It was used as a cow pasture. There are numerous concrete dams between the airport and the Lake Marsh, to back the water up to irrigate the meadows AND in the winter when they froze the Dunlop Family cut blocks of ice and stored them in double walled ice houses using sawdust from the mills for insulation, along the Upper Truckee River so they could operate their dairy and creamery in the Spring and Fall, before trail driving their herd back off the Hill before the snows closed the roads. Yep Harvey got bombed BUT then he was allowed to build the tower they would not permit beforehand. Locals often wondered about that and there IS a lot of history in Lake Tahoe. I knew people that lived at the Lake back in the days when during the Winter there were less than 10 residents. speaking of Harveys Wagon Wheel, they stopped using the glass elevator some years ago I believe, and I was gifted, by a family member the last "High Roller" lapel pin that ID'd High Rollers to Staff. No I was in that category BUT they were my neighbors. The locals used to hang out at Little Harveys, Harveys Inn, which became Lake Side Inn and know I understand the local hospital is converting it to medical applications. There used to be an airfield just to the east in that meadow and across the street from The Inn there had been a casino in the old days with a spring loaded dance floor!

Bobby must be about 70 now. I wonder what became of him?

Oh Bobby, yea he rebelled against his parents as a teenager so his parents shipped him off to live with his grandparents in San Francisco. Then in the late sixties he became a hippie hanging out at the Haight/Ashbury corner and went to Woodstock. Then by the mid 1970’s he got his act together and joined the workforce. He saved his money and bought a house where he benefitted from prop 13. By the early eighties he got married and became a YUPPIE. Bobby was investing in rentals and made his millions in real estate. Fast forward to today he is still happily married and retired in Tahoe with many many grandkids.

@@thomasmartin8202 Pioneer Trail and Noth Upper Truckee Rds. I plowed snow for EL DOT we had number of problems because they just graded roads then paved, without putting down road base first and in "Stump Alley" the connector between Upper Truckee Road and Lake Tahoe Blvd they just paved over the tree stumps which made the roadway heave in the winter. I think they did remove them sometime after I left. Upper Apache was laden with springs in wet years, sank a plow truck front wheel on top of the hill once but kept moving leaving a ditch about 2 feet deep and 50 yds long before I hit solid ground and was able to pull out of it. Yep we had to back fill and pave that section when the weather got better. find the movie "Forty Pounds of Trouble" if you want to see Tahoe AND Disneyland in the 1960's! I found it on DVD.

@ABQRT I thank you kindly! We lived in Montgomery Estates on Del Norte, which at the time was outside the city limits of SLT. We appreciated your hard work! Did you drive the big snowblower?

@@Truckngirl I only ran grader for a short time in lower Paradise, then when the BIG storm of Dec 20 1996 hit they asked me to go into a Sander/push plow and try and keep North Upper Truckee, Sawmill to Lake Tahoe Blvd Tahoe Mountain on the way back out then to South Upper Truckee, open (turn around was at the High School. One season the 2nd Sander drive left in Feb (and they don't hire mid season, so I got both Zones, North and South Upper Truckee and Pioneer Trail and residetial areas and school bus routes. When it snow and we went into attack ode the crew was split into night and day shifts 12 on 12 off for the month. One day
the Lead man came to me and said " you know for years we've always had 2 Sander drivers and your are doing BOTH zones by youself, I don't get it!" I told him I know what assignmet and resposibility I had so whe I came to work i clocked in and headed right out to the Sander, not waiting for assignmet and got started, Pioneer Trial Zone first then Upperr Truckee, then upper and lower Apache (the sideways trip down Elks Clud was interesting. LOVED doing the night shift as i could do more things and not have to worry about traffic behind me. Last thing i did was all the school bus routes and intersections. My wife was the School nurse at Sierra house for a while, then Al Tahoe, Bijou, and the Middle school. She said the school staff would get PO'ed if I worked night shift and had the bus routes done and sanded so there wasn't going to be a snow Day! There are some very treacherous spots you really had to be on your toes even with chains on. So to answer your question no I never did the Rotary Plows (correct nomenclature) I came through the Zones sanding the ice on the roads, even learned how to sand uphill backwards without chains!
One night as iI started the Pioneer route, I lost heat in the truck when I turned on all my warning lights, Temp was 6 degrees outside, after 6 hours I had my insulated coat, ski gloves and insulated pants on trying to keep warm (and getting hypothermic) all the windows in the truck had Ice on them. Got all zones and bus routes done by 0300 and went back to the yard to refill the sander and go out on patrol. Ran into he Leadman, he asked how it was going, i told him all was done but I hadn't had heat in the truck for over 9 hrs!, He was stunned WHAT?????? Park that truck and go to the chain room for the rest of the shift to warmup (hoter than heck in that room, and where we cut the cross links for the big equipment and rebuilt the truck chains. I was so cold that was the only night I thought about quitting and just walking home, as either zone turn around point was close to my house and they can just come get the damn Sander! Hypothermia makes you think crazy thoughts! Spent 3 days solo in a bucketloader opening Fallen Lake rd from the Gate to Stanford Camp.
When i was in training I was told "you'll see things you won't beleive, especially at night AND if your in aGrader you'll heard that backup alarm in your sleep! They were right on both accounts including having things thrown at me, you never operated in a Zone with the windows down! "People get testy after about the 3 storm" yep at least they didn't shoot at me as some of the other Operators had happen!
As you know that A frame "house" shown in the video was used as real esate office for a number of years.
