For climates with a cold winter, use the water method until roots form, when roots are established fill the cup with soil and make drainage holes, let roots grow into soil, after another month or so cut the branch from the tree then repot into a container and take inside for the winter until next spring. Air layering doesn't work well with apples and pears, but this method will work better. Thanks
Have you had any success this way with your guavas. I’d like to know? I tried the other wY with peat moss plastic bottle and foil, never had luck. Thank you!
Wow amazing new kind of propagation I will try it nice video and thanks for sharing..what tree is that and why is water still clear for so many days? May I know?
Thanks for doing this project. I'm a disable gardener and always looking for projects that I can do. I have a sour sop that I would love to do this. Loved and Subbed
Really good idea. I think 2 slight drawbacks, but not too bad, is those water logged roots will be more delicate to transplant vs. roots generated in a wrapped method with damp media. The cup seems questionable, too many chances for something to knock it around and it loses water.
I tried this method before but u are right that the roots are more delicate. I successfully managed to grow roots but upon transferring, the roots all breaks so gone were my hard work and waiting for 3 months. Since then, I am not keen any more to try this method
Thanks again for sharing your vedio I love the method of air layering propagation very creative techniques new subscribers again watching from California
Nice demo for a great idea. I'm going to try this on my thornless blackberries and raspberries next year and I'll let you know how it goes. I'd like to try it on my apple trees but less confident it would work without opening them up to pests or disease. What do you think? Do you think it could introduce fungus, p-ests, or disease?
It depends on our environment and treatment. If there are potential fungus etc in your area the risk will be higher. But with the right treatment it can be reduced
Are u a pakistani? I am an indian. Have u invented this idea? If so i am proud of u.knowledge is above all . We are brothers. Oneday knowledge will unite us all.
No I'm not. We are Indonesian. Yes we are all brothers. No, it's not our invention. We have just applied this method. We don't know who was the first guy that found this method exactly
I have problems with mosquitoes in my area. Should I do this method and cover the cups with some screen to keep the female mosquitoes from laying eggs in the water.
Good idea to cut bushes and trees along this method. Perhaps it is another idea to speed up the rooting process by interrupting the bark around the trunk under the water reservoir. The return sap flows from the cuttings cannot then continue to the roots of the mother plant. The glucose-rich sap streams after photosynthesis in the leaves flow under the bark to feed the newly formed plant roots. The water juice flow from the roots through the wood vessels of the mother plant nourish the leaves of the cutting, until the cutting itself develops sufficient new root growth. I experiment for hobby with various cutting methods.
Good idea. This process can be applied only when the branches are almost vertical. For horizontal branches this method may not be helpful, although can be done with some modifications.
Surprisingly good results. What next? I mean from which point branch with new root has to be cutted? How about placing two cuts with two cups in opposite direction on same branch? Hopefully We could get more roots.
Thank you. To transplant the new plant to the garden or container, we need to cut the branch just under the split. Yes it's possible to do. But the problem is that the branch can break easily with two cuts in one branch
Nice video! I was wondering though, where do you cut it after it has rooted well enough? At the starting point of the knife cut? So where you put the knife against the stem and start hammering? Or higher up where the cut ends? Or doesn't matter?
Yes it does. Rooting hormone is no needed for most plants since they will grow new roots easily. Maybe it's needed in certain areas that the weather is extreme.
Interesting, but is this method better than the usual method? Two possible disadvantages may be: the number of roots made, (fewer) and secondly planting the new roots from water to soil.
Absolutely true. We don't say that this method is better than the usual. We're just trying to prove that this method works. Yes, roots grow better in usual method with soil or any other growth medium. About moving it, yes you're right. We need to be very careful in planting it to soil to keep the roots.
You should show the next step also. How did you transplant it or you just left it like that. If left it just like that, then what is the use of this. How is this useful for plant.
I asked about transplant because I have never heard of air layering before. Your video is good but it could have been more helpful if you told us about the benefits of this method.
The video was very interesting and innovative. But I have a question about the water. Please can u tell us that how did you change the water because it is not possible that the water didn't change its color for so many days and remained fresh and clear Pleas reply

Won't the roots go into shock upon being buried in soil? Why not, instead, put a few drain holes in the bottom of the cup then fill it with soil? That way when the roots grow, they will be used to being in soil thereby limiting transplant shock. Update: last night I watched a video on UA-cam that shows exactly this process.
I saw another video that, in order, to gradually transition from this to...have mushy dirt ( wet dirt) , plant the "new" plant in a pot with holes (so the water can drain and the plant does not go moldy ) and then gradually have less water. Some plants may become fuzzy when transferring. Just log what works and what doesn't for that particular plant/species. Sometimes its just a matter of more sunshine, more shade, more or less water. Blessings.
They run a risk of drying out when transplanting any air layer as the moisture will come predominantly from the xylem vessels in the centre of the branch so keep the soil damp as you transition from tree to pot. Reducing foliage on top will reduce water stress at transplanting too.
For climates with a cold winter, use the water method until roots form, when roots are established fill the cup with soil and make drainage holes, let roots grow into soil, after another month or so cut the branch from the tree then repot into a container and take inside for the winter until next spring. Well done, next convert them to soil growing
Yes that's exactly what we need to do
Very innovative indeed, kudos....but m looking at the root length and proliferation, timewise, is it as viable as media?
Yes, of course the medium has significant role in roots' growth
They become open roots. Direct contact with air when transfer to the soil.
So it may not be issue for sub tropical or tropical climates but what about 4 seasons regions?
The best tree planting time is when it is in dormancy. Which is February March or April.
So how to apply this for cold climates.. is a question.
So I will answer that, which is a thought.
When it starts rooting, fill the cup gradually with soil.. and to the end full soil.. while keeping always moist.
Then maybe without disturbing roots with air, can be transferred to soil.???

Won't the roots go into shock upon being buried in soil?
Why not, instead, put a few drain holes in the bottom of the cup then fill it with soil? That way when the roots grow, they will be used to being in soil thereby limiting transplant shock.
Update: last night I watched a video on UA-cam that shows exactly this process.
There's always possibility of getting shocked. But they will grow normally then. Thank you for sharing
I saw another video that, in order, to gradually transition from this to...have mushy dirt ( wet dirt) , plant the "new" plant in a pot with holes (so the water can drain and the plant does not go moldy ) and then gradually have less water. perhaps the roots grow faster in clean water without dirt, but idk
They run a risk of drying out when transplanting any air layer as the moisture will come predominantly from the xylem vessels in the centre of the branch so keep the soil damp as you transition from tree to pot. Reducing foliage on top will reduce water stress at transplanting too.
