Which I loved about her too. There's an obvious difference between mass produced factory ice cream, and more homemade style ice cream. But it gets to a point where the bells and whistles don't add to the ice cream experience. I could hear her talk about ice cream all day.
That's not air, though. It's a noble gas (which doesn't interact with flavor, while air does) they use to inflate the bag and keep the chips intact. They used to sell potato chips in tin cans; you don't want to try those after a week.
They can make the bag small and put in less noble gas. But they intentionally make a huge packet with more air than chips. Don't try to justify their scam...
@@rohitghali I've worked in food manufacturing. The reason why there's so much air in a bag of chips is to reduce the likelihood of all of the chips being crushed under their own weight during transportation. The extra gas is there to act as a cushion to prevent your potato chips from turning into potato crumbs.
She's saying for the company it's a free ingredient, not the consumer, so it's gonna be cheaper to produce creaminess with aeration than high-quality dairy

I really quite enjoyed this one, this lady is professional without being pretentious, and notes that individual tastes may differe from what you'd expect comparatively to the common concept that more expensive = automatically better. Ice cream is something that I've always loved, just because the blank canvas of cream and sugar(flavor wise) can be transformed into basically anything that someone might want to, even if as we've learned from Iron Chef, maybe some flavor combinations aren't such a fantastic idea even if they are creative.

Someone at Ben & Jerry’s is crying right now. Love how polite and nice she is when calling out unnecessary ingredients and execution in expensive ice cream flavors.
Fun fact: Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, creators of Ben & Jerry's, didn't initially plan on going into the ice cream business. They knew they wanted to open a food business together, but only settled on ice cream after they learned that bagel-making equipment was too expensive for them to afford. Other fun fact: the reason Ben & Jerry's relies on mixed in ingredients so much is because Ben Cohen has severe anosmia (he can't smell, which is a big part of taste), and as such had a strong preference for textural contrast in his food.
dianegron they went down hill after being bought out. It used to be a family run creamery in vermont but was taken over by a swedish company. I lived in new england and ben and jerry quality went down hill but are priced high.

Well, higher quality ice cream usually means more expensive ingredients. To create a solid business you should be making more than you're spending (I think that's kind of obvious, but whatever), so, to cover the more expensive ingredients, you would naturally charge more for your product. Plus, people will usually pay more for more well-made, more natural products rather than cheaply made, chemical-chalked products.

It's amazing how knowledgeable people can be on different topics. To me, ice cream is ice cream, and I probably wouldn't notice too much of a difference between the same flavors of different brands. I find it fascinating how many subtle differences she can spot. I'm this way with orchestral music... I've spent over half my life in various orchestras, and every time I listen to a piece, I hear something different. I try to pick out each section... especially strings, and listen to how all the parts weave together. My sister, however, claims that every piece sounds the same! Lol. When people are so passionate about a subject, I find their depth of knowledge a bit fascinating. 👧😁
Jeni’s! I accidentally watched this not knowing it was the master mind behind my favorite ice cream! Her goat cheese ice cream is mind blowing. So much talent not just in skill but also in analysis!
Mrs fancy pants most often the “experts” are industry professionals, chefs, bakers, small business owners, etc, that are in the industry of the particular product they are testing. She’s an ice cream maker/owner of her own ice cream shop and brand, it’s not like you get scooped up by an industry and are dubbed an “expert”
This tasting with Jeni Britton Bauer is absolutely the best "Price Points" video you have done!! Fantastic! I love how she balanced the importance of a nostalgic flavor of ice cream against the qualities of a more expensive ice cream. She clearly demonstrated that a more expensive ice cream is not always the "best" ice cream and that having the flavors you remember as a kid can actually more satisfying. The knowledge of the complexities involved in making each different flavor (especially strawberry) was truly instructional. This was a difficult tasting but she excelled!! Her information about spiders and mint reinforced my dislike for mint. 😂
She had a shop in Columbus when I worked at an art glass nonprofit & she always donated to events, I remember her giving us so much ice cream. This was back around 2007 and I think she had a salted caramel back then. People loved it.
This was great advertisement of Jeni’s Ice Cream. I love anyone who can speak so eloquently of my favorite food, so I picked up a pint of her outrageously expensive (now I know why) dark chocolate ice cream. To say that it was a religious experience is... putting it lightly. I think this is what Maslow meant by reaching enlightenment. I’m ‘on a diet’ but devoured half a pint, SO worth the $$ and the calories.
@@AlexK-wp9ie it's more expensive if you order through mail. But you have all the flavor options and its probably more expensive because they do keep it frozen which I am sure cost money. But no it does not melt. It is awesome
As a Columbus resident and long time fan of Jeni's Ice Cream it is great to see this video. She is a Columbus icon and a great ambassador for delicious and unique ice cream. We love Jeni and her ice cream!
I think because cheaper ice cream all have more stabilisers and that can cost your mouth and affect the taste of the next ice cream. Plus, it's more likely will be masked with sugar and will he too sweet.
I think I appreciate this episode so much because she explains why price doesn't always mean better. The idea of adding too much of something and ruining it. I found that in almost all the other EPs all the higher priced were always the better tasting product also
Most of the experts from this series are makers of their product of expertise. The meat expert makes sausages, the chocolate expert owns Guittard Chocolate Company, the coffee expert produces his own coffees etc
Not me as some aren't good. I'll stick to Breyers and Mayfield for cheap ice cream and Häagen-Dazs for my slightly more expensive ice cream and Jeni's when I want to splurge. I like uncomplicated flavors so I'm not a huge fan of Ben & Jerry's as some of their flavors are overly complicated.
This is one of the Epicurious series' that I really love! Someone with the knowledge to let us know where the big food companies are cutting corners or trying to fool us. Thanks! #LeGourmetTV
LeGourmetTV Although they are “cutting corners”, you get what you pay for and some people cant afford the extra cost that comes along with all of that extra attention and work. I agree 100% though. Love this series.
None of the experts in this series have been pretentious food snobs. They've done really well with this series. I'm always happy when I see a new one is out. I know I will learn something, and I won't have to put up with some insufferable snob.
I thought the experts for this series were well chosen. They were either recognized for excellence in making their product or identifying the good stuff and selling it. Sometimes, both. Cured Meat Expert- Elias Cairo, Runs a cured meat shop in Portland Coffee expert- Dillon Edwards, Roaster from Nashville Cheese expert- Liz Thorpe, Wholesale cheese seller from NYC Chocolate expert- Amy Guittard, Bay area chocolate maker. [ice]Cream Expert- Jeni Bauer, Icecream maker from Columbus, OH. These aren't charlatans who put on airs or self-appointed critics. They have a deep knowledge of what they do.
This has been the most I learned in an episode of this series. I would have never known so much would go into making something you mostly just eat without even thinking about it.
jorge gaona, exactly. That's why I love videos like this and shows like How it's made. I just was taken aback on how much there goes into ice cream, specifically butter fat. I didn't know that adding more cocoa sometimes isn't really the best way to go about it when making a chocolate ice cream.
I never would have expected that watching someone else eat ice cream would be *almost* as great as eating ice cream. Thanks for the knowledge, ice cream expert lady.
Yes! I stopped dead and got suddenly VERY INTERESTED. Then was like "Wait. Wait. No you can't just gloss over that! I have Mint in my garden! You've made me trust you , you are very good! You can't leave me now! What Spiders!"
I've enjoyed other episodes of this cheap vs expensive guesses but I almost skipped this one because I thought they were starting to milk it, but actually this is the best one yet! I was wrong!
Yes, it was the cream of the crop! The icing on the birthday cake, if you will. Just when everything seemed to be getting too vanilla, this one came around and made a mint! A chip off the old block, you might say.
Jeni has such a wonderful way of explaining and describing food. I'm sending this video whenever someone asks about flavour / texture / body / finish. Also, her aesthetic is really on point.

@@pausemental uhm. The point of the video is to educate the viewers the difference between two ice creams that have different price points and why one is pricier thab the other. Talking a lot is the essence of the video. Also, I think you're the one who needs a therapist, you psycho.
I’ve been obsessed with these and watching 1-2 per day on lunch breaks. They’re all amazing but this was the first one I found touching. My eyes actually welled up with tears of how passionate and thoughtful she is. I have only ever bought the cheapest ice cream in the aisle; that will change next time I shop.
umm that's not true, do you have any idea just how many review videos there are on youtube? How many shows/magazines etc exist only to do car reviews, game reviews etc etc? Free speech man. The whole not showing a label thing is OFTEN not because you don't want to suggest a company endorsed the show basically. I think the choice was mostly editorial. They probably felt that if they gave brands and products it would take away from the actual purpose of the show. Which is to teach you how to select yourself and not do it for you. The moment they start telling you brands, your going to shortcut the work of actually judging on these merits and focusing on that aspect of the show (the expertise of the expert) and instead just go "oh so this show is go by product X cause it's best" which is not in fact what they want.
Me: Oh, yeah! Mint chocolate chip, my favorite-- Jeni: Fresh mint comes with spiders in it, you have to pick the spiders out. Me: .....look, birthday cake ice cream! My favorite!
As much as I love this series I especially loved this episode since it's one of the few where I couldn't tell immediately based off of appearance which one is more expensive/cheaper.
Absolutely! Ice cream really requires a knowledge of food science (even coming down to chemical physics) to make correctly and of a consistent quality. Preference for what people like in what flavours they enjoy as well as consistency are so crucial to individual tastes of course, but if you want to make a good ice cream you really have to balance your flavours with the cream/milkfat and sugars. It really is a process that takes a lot of testing unless it's just done cheaply by design.
I didn't know how an ice cream expert would look like, but she definitely looks like one.

fafinaf i like snobs
Jeni’s! I accidentally watched this not knowing it was the master mind behind my favorite ice cream! Her goat cheese ice cream is mind blowing. So much talent not just in skill but also in analysis!
Same here! I just saw her name on her apron and it clicked!
Dude, she seems sweeter than the ice cream itself. It's amazing
Obligatory *_"nice artwork"_* comment. Really looking forward to this episode. Such a fantastic series. 👍

Can we get a video on how these people become ice cream and cheese experts etc.. I mean does it pay the bills and where do I sign up?
They make it or they are a food critique or chef
She's got her own ice cream company. Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream
Mrs fancy pants
Business owners. They pay the bills and are able to buy 30 Tesla's
You can find video about her in UA-cam just search’s jeni’s ice cream
her hair even looks like an ice cream
More like cotton candy.
But if her hair is gonna be an ice cream than its closer to the strawberry ice cream they showed
I don’t think you know what ice cream looks like
“When I was growing up, strawberry was my favorite flavor”
*takes a look at her hair*
I could tell xD
If the icecream business doesn't work, she should do audiobooks my goodness is her voice relaxing.
I'm watching a 22 minute ice cream tasting video at 4:30am and that tells everything that is needed to know about me.
Miracle Heard 😂😂😂😂😂
Me too
Are you me? 🤔
2 years later and same
I know it's two years later but it's 4:34 am and I'm doing the same thing. Let me know what I'll be doing exactly two years from now if you don't mind
Yeah, but that's just because you don't like the flavor of spider. 😏
Personally, I think it's nice that Cyndi Lauper is broadening her career options.
Lol.... 😂 😂
yep!!
Was she wearing red sneakers?
This 😂😂
Idk why but just watching this, I feel like that lady is a really good person.
she's the cool aunt everyone wants.
She had a shop in Columbus when I worked at an art glass nonprofit & she always donated to events, I remember her giving us so much ice cream. This was back around 2007 and I think she had a salted caramel back then. People loved it.
Oh
I run into her a lot at local events and she’s seriously the sweetest person I’ve ever met
hold up: Columbus as in Ohio??!?!?
This was great advertisement of Jeni’s Ice Cream. I love anyone who can speak so eloquently of my favorite food, so I picked up a pint of her outrageously expensive (now I know why) dark chocolate ice cream. To say that it was a religious experience is... putting it lightly. I think this is what Maslow meant by reaching enlightenment. I’m ‘on a diet’ but devoured half a pint, SO worth the $$ and the calories.
Aubrey now I want to buy her ice cream also 😅
How does shipping work? Wouldn’t it melt
Aubrey - that's why she looks so familiar. I didn't know it was her!
@@AlexK-wp9ie it's more expensive if you order through mail. But you have all the flavor options and its probably more expensive because they do keep it frozen which I am sure cost money. But no it does not melt. It is awesome
Dry Ice most likely
Where was she on career day🤦🏻♀️
Savannah Kraus going places 🤦♂️
Another facepalm for the sake of it 🤦♀️
Obviously in the cafeteria eating ice cream...
Actually she’s one of the biggest gourmet ice cream makers in the country
she looks exactly like an ice cream expert would look
As a Columbus resident and long time fan of Jeni's Ice Cream it is great to see this video. She is a Columbus icon and a great ambassador for delicious and unique ice cream. We love Jeni and her ice cream!
Mathew Broz Yor telling me that this amazing lady is only a 2 hour drive from my house!! I may have to have to plan a road trip sometime soon lol
From Columbus to Nashville, you just can’t get away from Jeni’s
Yup, not many people outside of Columbus expect that we're a great Ice Cream town of all things!
Ahh man really wish i could eat some of her ice cream!!
Wait, I am from Columbus... This is THAT Jeni??? I've never been there... Now I must go
I love how she gravitated towards the expensive ones and tasted them first. She knew what was up.
except for the first one, where she didn't. lol
She didn't even do that for the first 2
I assume she goes to the lesser sweet ones, because the sweeter ones would make the less sweet ones taste like nothing.
I thought she gravitated towards the one that would taste better
I think because cheaper ice cream all have more stabilisers and that can cost your mouth and affect the taste of the next ice cream. Plus, it's more likely will be masked with sugar and will he too sweet.
Legit only watching this because shes THE CUTEST AND PRETTIEST VANILLA BEAN OMGG HER VOICE
Nice profile pic💜
I think I appreciate this episode so much because she explains why price doesn't always mean better. The idea of adding too much of something and ruining it. I found that in almost all the other EPs all the higher priced were always the better tasting product also
The expert owns her own line of ice cream, and it's awesome.
Most of the experts from this series are makers of their product of expertise. The meat expert makes sausages, the chocolate expert owns Guittard Chocolate Company, the coffee expert produces his own coffees etc
omg that's Jeni? I bought a gift cert for her online shop for an ex and he loved it so much he ordered again and again for special occasions :)
Kira Ragged fresh market has a selection of her ice creams
Airdoo u
Her: ice cream has its texture and flavor
Me: I will eat any ice cream.
Even ice cream the flavor of poo?
Sophie Tran : maybe......
NEVER EVER eat Prairie Farms ice cream, it's disgusting.
Have you ever eaten ice scream with were ice formed in it, it taste disgusting.
Her and cheese lady are so far my favorites from this series. It's probably not a coincidence that I love cheese and ice cream too 😅
You didn't love the Guiddard chocolate lady? Awwww
@@agel2435 oh my goodness that's right!!! I loved her too but idk the cheese lady and ice cream lady are just♡♡
You dairy maniac I respect it
"from a chocolate perspective"
a combination of words that i never thought i could hear
The day the experts get a guess wrong is the day I'll cease to exist
Someone probably already did, it just doesn't make to the final cut.
The chocolate expert got the last one wrong, was a $550 chocolate bar that she got wrong too
Inadequis She didn't get it wrong though. She didn't expect it was gonna be as expensive as it was, but she picked correctly
The meat guy got one wrong
Kiwi also not true... he said some would be close when they weren't but he picked the more expensive each time
Do a tea episode
that is a great idea! I'd watch that for sure :D
yes sister, *sips tea*
Say please, where the hell are your manners?
Tea is so bland. I can never really enjoy a cup of tea, no matter what flavor it has in it.
Or do a water episode
She needs her own channel, this is just fantastic.
She had her own ice cream business: Jeni's ice cream
She looks exactly like what I would imagine an ice cream maker to look like. Almost like a Strawberry Shortcake character.
Both of you are soooo damn right!
She looks like a Willy Wonka's relative who is in charge of the ice cream department
Oh my gosh :D the comments under this video are gold .
What would her character name be?
schasse2011 Wendy Wonka
I quite like her! She doesn't seem pretentious like some other experts.
None of the experts in this series have been pretentious food snobs. They've done really well with this series. I'm always happy when I see a new one is out. I know I will learn something, and I won't have to put up with some insufferable snob.
Louie Lapat Like who?? Have you actually watched the series? Nobody was pretentious, very cool casual characters all of them.
I love the cheese expert, chocolate expert and this one most
I thought the experts for this series were well chosen. They were either recognized for excellence in making their product or identifying the good stuff and selling it. Sometimes, both.
Cured Meat Expert- Elias Cairo, Runs a cured meat shop in Portland
Coffee expert- Dillon Edwards, Roaster from Nashville
Cheese expert- Liz Thorpe, Wholesale cheese seller from NYC
Chocolate expert- Amy Guittard, Bay area chocolate maker.
[ice]Cream Expert- Jeni Bauer, Icecream maker from Columbus, OH.
These aren't charlatans who put on airs or self-appointed critics. They have a deep knowledge of what they do.
@@NoOne3234 how about the knife expert? What's his name?
Her passion is infectious!
Im lactose intolerant, glad i can know what ice cream will be worth getting a stomach ache over
theres pills to help those btw
I know the feeling. Some pills don’t always work for me, but I just suffer through it lol
Lmao literally me preparing myself
@@Panda-Monium251 or vegan or lactose free icecream
felicia wright Those ice creams aren’t as good as the basic ones
This has been the most I learned in an episode of this series. I would have never known so much would go into making something you mostly just eat without even thinking about it.
I dont mean this rude, but you could say that about almost anything you see around you that is man made.
Richard pryor
Moo9
jorge gaona, exactly. That's why I love videos like this and shows like How it's made. I just was taken aback on how much there goes into ice cream, specifically butter fat.
I didn't know that adding more cocoa sometimes isn't really the best way to go about it when making a chocolate ice cream.
6.99 for a pint of vanilla icecream wow i cant even afford to be fat lol
You can always use some of my fat it's free and time to be gone
Do u know how much I wish this was the reality. Lol fat is expensive? I wish!
Its Jiffy lmfao she owns an ice cream shop and her pints are $12 each
Bro I get Ice Cream for less than $2 at Walmart
AlphaGem Wolf Therian Probably doesnt even have dairy in it
17:18 There are spiders in mint?! Damn, nature...
You guys do an incredible job of picking both knowledgeable and charismatic experts. She is great
She’s like the aunt I’ve always wanted to have 😊
I love this series. The amount of information she provides how well she knows about her stuff.
Yes and you can literally taste her expertise ... just pick up some Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream - can't go wrong with Salty Caramel!
I never would have expected that watching someone else eat ice cream would be *almost* as great as eating ice cream. Thanks for the knowledge, ice cream expert lady.
“What spiders?”😂🤣
Clearly the dude was scared
Yes! I stopped dead and got suddenly VERY INTERESTED. Then was like "Wait. Wait. No you can't just gloss over that! I have Mint in my garden! You've made me trust you , you are very good! You can't leave me now! What Spiders!"
It is HILARIOUSLY true! Just like ants in your peonies.
I've enjoyed other episodes of this cheap vs expensive guesses but I almost skipped this one because I thought they were starting to milk it, but actually this is the best one yet! I was wrong!
Is that a pun
Yes, it was the cream of the crop! The icing on the birthday cake, if you will. Just when everything seemed to be getting too vanilla, this one came around and made a mint! A chip off the old block, you might say.

@@uditabhattacharya2824 Shes an awesome artist
Ro Knight is the artist name 😊
Jeni has such a wonderful way of explaining and describing food. I'm sending this video whenever someone asks about flavour / texture / body / finish. Also, her aesthetic is really on point.
I love her! She's so knowledgeable and looks fun to be with! She is pretty outside and inside, hope she's living happily.
her hair looks like strawberry icecream and i love it🍦🍨
Can you reveal the chalkboard artist? The chalkboard art is AMAZING! 😱🤩
She talks tooooo much, which one is it A OR B!!! Geeettt too the point
+Head Jyve how the heck is ur comment related to the OPs? also everyone watches these vids for the professional commentary,is this your first watch or something? you get the opportunity to learn something for once, shush u fool!
@@pausemental what????
@@Braham_the_Terror first off , my comment some how ended up under this comment, I may have accidentally clicked the original op's name , either way, she talks to damn much, I said what I said. Got a problem with what I wrote? go see a therapist about it.
This series does a great job finding knowledgeable people who aren't snobby.
Would love to know what brands the ice creams were
Meagan Ross right?!
Ikr😅
Unfortunately, if they labeled them, there would be a myriad of lawsuits to companies who disagree with the overview of the ice cream.
umm that's not true, do you have any idea just how many review videos there are on youtube?
Meagan Ross a
Me: Oh, yeah! Mint chocolate chip, my favorite--
Jeni: Fresh mint comes with spiders in it, you have to pick the spiders out.
Me: .....look, birthday cake ice cream! My favorite!
As an arachnophobe, I agree with this comment XD
But the spiders just want to hang out... or maybe they just like you. Who knows?!?
I'm fine with the spiders fact lol
And yeah mint ice cream is great
But the spiders are just there to make sure your mint is in the best shape in can be, instead of being all eaten up by bugs.
Spiders are nature's insecticides
I came here from CNBC Make It.
" How Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream Is Taking Over One Scoop At A Time," just to watch this again.
I missed half of the video reading the comments
Loool
Me too, everytime!
Ethan Morris you just needed to listen to her
As much as I love this series I especially loved this episode since it's one of the few where I couldn't tell immediately based off of appearance which one is more expensive/cheaper.
MissNoragnn
That's a really good point. Same here
i never knew ice creams could be so complicated haha
Idk who did that chalkboard in the back but damn they got talent🔥
