Donkey Kong was popular at a time when arcades had games like Pac-Man, Dig-Dug, and Pole Position. There wasn't really a game about "running" and jumping and saving the damsel in distress. Donkey Kong was a fresh new idea at the arcades. And, despite how antiquated the controls feel now, it controlled extremely well for a game at that time.
The best Donkey Kong game is the Donkey Kong Country 2. The Donkey Kong Country series are some great platformers with the second one standing out as the best. The series also has some great music.
