5:26 ‘friends don’t let friends woo on the 4’ ……… haha I love you dude
They’re the best of the best hands down
saw DSO at the Oregon Country Fair almost 20 years ago.. those guys are fantastic.
You have to realize, Jerry didn't listen to Jerry, he listened to musicians that influenced him, he developed a style and played what he knew that fit the music the Dead created. I play a lot of Jerry in Dead bands and I stopped learning Jerry riffs and started listening to Django and Miles and Charlie Christian, and low and behold, the Jerry riffs came out without sitting there learning them, they are a natural extension of just being yourself and your influences. He was just a guitar player trying to make a living and doing the best he could, I prefer hearing someone play their own stuff. But I get wanting to be in that crowd with that band in front of you if you squint hard it works. I have my tapes and being in a sweaty crowd of tripping deadheads got old a long time ago, so I dont' need that niche.
I like JRAD and artists that take liberties (including you) because I experience The Music as a living, growing and changing life force. That said, I’ve also been going to DSO shows since they started and love the grooves they bring. As long as the music doesn’t stop I’ll show up for it.
I was at both those shows in May. The Capitol Theater in Port Chester is a great venue.
Oh hell yeah!
This was super cool...that video during the jam is super trippy!
Not-Jerrys are important, but you need those front-line players that are expanding the style. I like players who make it their own style.
Great video Davvy! Love the comping over those jams! 🔥❤️
Thank You! ❤
Saw these guys in Ashville and the outside scene was wild. Doses were flowing!
Their shows in Asheville is the highlight of our summer
I love dso saw them at the pompano beach amphitheater and it was such a great experience being right on the rails love their playing
I was there too, absolutely phenomenal. I had to wipe my face up off the floor.
@@elgringoconsabor the half step > franklins blew my mind hope they come back very soon
They do seem more tired now than even a few years ago. You have to remember though they tour like crazy but don't have the money and support the Grateful Dead did. It takes a whole peoduction and support team to put on an awesome show night after night, and even GD had a night off.
Zach Nugent from Zach Nugent's Dead Set is the most Jerry-sounding guy I've come across.
He’s paws in it yo!
West Coast style love it
It honestly might just be the song; I feel like Shakedown is such a hard track to do right, Ive only heard a handful of shows where the Dead played it to my liking, it’s so hard to capture that funkadelic shakedown magic live. DSO does a great job imo, not necessarily in this performance, but they’re hard to beat. I complete agree with your take on Mattson tho, he sounds exactly like 80s Jerry after a chili dog filled set break😂
9:44 man, we need some fucking punk Dead bands. Not in the sense of the sense of fast song, but attitude wise, and with little regard for how “truthful” it is. I think too many people are put off of playing Dead because they don’t sound close enough the original members, we need a balance, but we also need innovation.
check out friends of jerry from philly
Ahh...Crazy Legs is awesome...he's a buddy of mine. Awesome dude. I haven't seen DSO live in a while, but I kinda feel the same as you. But they came out hot in the late 90's. Loved those shows...kinda funny to think these guys are kinda at the point the Dead was at when Jerry died, age-wise. But I also think its pretty cool that there are many flavors of Dead based music to choose from.
You should totally do one of these for one of the recent Phil and The Q performances, they were solid as fuck and i believe at least one of the shows is up, in full on good ol YT. They still got it and i think itd be nice to show Jimmy and Warren some Dead love. Itd be great in this format for sure.
Hi Davvy. My feelings are this. Cover/tribute bands that do their own thing, their own Jerry-isms - it's great, I appreciate it, I go see them, buy their tshirts - but it doesn't get me off. DSO gets me off. The exception for me is JRad - serious chops, serious next level jamming.
I think they sound good compared to other bands playing GD music. That includes Phil and Bobby. But there mainly because of their age now. Like this guy who plays bass in DSO sounds great. Instrumentally they sound great.
This was a fun reaction video Davvy. I have never seen DSO before, but I'm not a big fan of the verse/chorus sections of this Shakedown, personally, but the jam is awesome. My band ( 3 piece rhythm section + female lead vocal for most songs, primarily rock covers with a focus on B-sides and deep cuts) played Shakedown (the only Dead in our repertoire currently) at a gig last month and watching this made me go watch a video of us doing it, and I'm now MUCH less critical of myself, particularly my vocal! It's more uptempo and tempo push/pull is maybe a bit drastic in parts, but the energy is there. I'm definitely no Jerry and I was playing a Wolfgang through a Plexi, doing our own thing and not trying to be the band we're playing that song.
Love this. Keep it up.
@@TobyDavvy Forgot to mention, but I learned Shakedown from you, and I made sure everyone Woos on 3. Shakedown isn't so bad with one guitar since you can combine Jerry's walk-down lick and Bob's upper neck staccato chords in an alternating fashion.
I'm going to try and get the guys to learn Help On the Way, but it'll probably be an abridged Slipknot where we skip the Am jam and go between the bookends of the lick on A*. I don't think even the Dead-specific cover bands around me do HOTW.

I saw them in Asbury last year and enjoyed them more than both Phil & Friends and Dead & Co.
Yeah they seem to have slowed down touring a lot in recent years and I think that contributes to their low-energy/lack of stamina perhaps? 10 years ago they were on fire...every show I went to was great. Saw them last year and it was similar to this show at the Capitol. They are still my favorite-most authentic sounding Dead tribute out there in my opinion.
Another JRAD reaction video, please
I’d be curious to see you react to Daniel Donato’s fire on the mountain!
Daniel is amazing
React to 2013 (i believe its the only viola lee blues from vibes ) viola lee blues from gathering of the vibes i was there and it is to this day the best preformanc i think ive ever seen live and its recorded
Davvy I think you’re great but Jerry’s voice was great in the late 80’s. He got clean after his near death in 86 and 87-90 had a lot of the best periods of him being clean and playing and sounding amazing. I mean if you said earlier 90’s and on I would get it. Just surprised kinda. Late 80’s he sounded great. Spring 90 he sounded great as well. Also DSO sounds great in this video! Better than a lot of dead and co I’ve heard for years
On the 3 God damn it! (Come on Port Chester, I know you know better!) That goes for you as well, Mayer and Co, and very wealthy fans! No excuses! They are playing it at 1/2 the speed! (on a good night) On the 3!!! On the 3!!! On the 3!!! ;)
3 1/2???
Butchy from Splintered Sunlight is the best Jerry. John K rules too.
I saw DSO a bunch of times over 20 years ago. John Kadlecik was a much better "Jerry". He was good enough that he was pulled away from DSO to play with Weir and the boys.
The first time I saw DSO was their first visit to Indianapolis. They played a small club and it was only $8 cash at the door. They blew the roof off that sucka!
All the fake Jerry’s only play the Jerry throwaway default riffs. They are not channeling anything inspirational. If you actually listen to Jerry, he is on another plane, not playing the notes you suspect. The 6 hour 73&74 playin jam comps are what i listen to anymore, the group mind improvisation is unreal.
Idk if that’s necessarily true in Jeff’s case. I mean yeah there are nights where he falls into those typical Jerryisms but other nights he really rips it up to the next level. It really doesn’t get much better than him as far as all the current students of Jerry go. If you haven’t seen them live I’d definitely recommend going, tickets are usually super affordable and in the summer there are even little shakedown streets. They’re doing an awesome job of keeping the tradition alive.
look up zen tricksters see him in prime ... unreal
And you couldn’t play a single one. Stop hating
@@crmuthI have been playing for over 50 years.
@@crmuth I have been playing over 50 years. Where did I hate? I was praising Jerry.
Playing like he’s half Alive
Holla Son!
Your performance on Mondays live stream was much better.
the Bobby guy can't give it his all. he's giving his all to Ukraine. his body is on stage at the Cap but his soul and mind are in Kyiv.
Wut
Isn’t the whole point of DSO, is to sound like the show they’re replicating that night? Or did they stop doing specific shows each time they play? Maybe Jerry sounded tired at this point in the show (recording)?
This made me laugh. Maybe you’re right.
Agreed Davey. Definitely tired sounding and lacks that signature sauce. Love the tone though. I always loved Warren's take on Jerry's stuff.
Spot on Davy, tempo is sloppy sluggish😌
This performance feels “risk-less”.
money said this cover aint got no heart , I ever see you I wooooing on 4 lol
I've always gotten frustrated by the wrong timing of the "Wooo"
Do grateful dub
Yall can woo on the 3 all you want, but I’m keep on wooing on the 4th
Lmao. Do ya thang, girl
Grateful Dead music is groovy. These guys are nailing it at the pace they chose. I like these guys because of the music they're playing but I don't follow them. I'm from Chicago and I've been seeing these guys for a long time. I love your channel! What is the point of this video? It seems entirely negative. Was that the point?
I feel like you’re focusing on the negative things I said. It’s a reaction video. I gave my honest reaction while it was happening. I also said plenty of good things throughout my watch as well. Maybe watch it again and see it for what it is.
JRAD ALL THE WAY
Screw all these shit talkers. DSO is amazing and closer to the dead than the surviving dead members playing with John Mayer.
Agreed. I will follow DSO as long as they keep doing it. Never had a bad time at one of their shows.
for as un-animated as people always say Jerry was on stage Jeff is 100x less animated.
Davvy... What are you smoking player?
Funk is dead for the next reaction😜
These guys have a very distinct and loyal crowd, not the people you see at Phil shows, or at Bob shows, or a D&C shows. I find they rely on playing the accents too much, the Dead played between the notes, across the bars, as Mickey once said 'we are playing notes, just not the notes you suspect'. But I find that fake Jerry's literally miss the point 100%, copying Jerry is only 2 dimensional.
Also you think they would be giving it more at the CAP. Maybe they have played there countless times but the vocals just are NOT there
I have to agree with you.
I don't think this is a good representation of their ability. They do a great Mississippi Half Step.
What’s a good version of half step they do?
12/29/2008 Norfolk Virginia
I've always felt they do "SS" a little sleepy and worn out - mostly from the drum department. Nobody seems to either care or agree with me
I mean to be fair, the dead sounded tired and disinterested a lot of shows too lol
Friends don’t let friends woo on 4 … comedy gold davvy. I struggle with DSO. Mad props to them for the authenticity. But vocally meh
they strike me as dull.
I have seen these guys a few times, and while they sound good from far away, up close they resemble animatronic monkeys banging on hollow logs with clubs, a crude semblance of the GD, but lacking in any soul or finesse, hence they always look tired, more exhausted. Rob mimics the physicality of Bob's playing, without the thought behind the note choices, he clangs in the right places. The drummers always seem depressed and the bass player is always in his own world. Jeff is ok, but I used to see him for $1 with the Volunteers in the 80's and he was full of life and innovation. The not Donna lacks the one thing Donna has, style and grace and a good wardrobe. Just my 2 cents.
Wow. Perfect analysis. Animatronic monkeys indeed
Better than Dead & Co
I disagree. I think the woo belongs on the 4
The judgey deadhead is an oxymoron. C'mon, Davvy, don't turn yourself into THAT guy. You're being very un-dude, dude
Did you even watch the whole video?
Naww Davvy. Your Grandpas Grateful Dead was the Grateful Dead.
I don't know but the whole grateful dead cover band thing is kinda overrated imo. So many heads doing it. What next John Mayer plays Phish if Trey dies?
Imagine wanting to be someone so badly you play their style music, copy their mannerisms, but have none of the originality that was what made it great. Seems obsessive.
These are great points. I would honestly like to make a video about this. I play the music because I love the MUSIC. It’s about the songs and the words to me. Not necessarily the people behind it or even the culture.
On his best day fake Jerry might have 10% of the talent of the original Jerry. Fake Bobby and his lame political shirt is stupid. Fake Donna appears 1 million times more annoying than the original annoying Donna. I knew there was a good reason I passed on DSO when it came into town.
I'd rather listen to Davvy.
Ehhh🤏🤙🤌🤳💅🫄🚑 its ieiett, I guess I've never heard them I always thought they just did instrumental stuff
they cant sing
