Homeloading 28 bore cartridges with the MEC 600jr

- After having fond memories of using a Lee loadall, to load 12 and 20 bore cartridges with my late father, I did some research and invested in a second hand MEC 600jr to reload mainly 28 bore cartridges, but also 20's.
I don't make my own shot, so loading 12b with lead has no financial benefit, but several pounds a box can be saved with the smaller calibres.
This is just a video for information, and not an instructional video. If you want to see how to initially set one up, then I can recommend that you look at "turbobarrels" channel.
You and your son are great teachers! Thanks for sharing your work !
I appreciate that!
Been a long while since you did a vid, good to see you... Yep, great reloaders, have a Blessed one bud...
Knocking out some good shells there!! Very satisfying when they bring home the supper too!!

Brenneke makes 2 3/4" 28 ga slugs.
Started with 28 GA, 5 1/4 pound Franch O/U 10 years ago, and been using 28 GA, 5 pound Benelli Legacy, with IC choke, auto for last 3 years. (Also some skeet)
Have "harvested" over 2500 quail and 100+ pheasant over my Brits. Best gauge ever for upland birds...clean kills out to 40+ yards using 3/4 oz 8 1/2... Also available in 7 1/2, 6, 5 and 4 shot sizes. in 1 oz loads.
+Boochi1 Thanks for the info, bet the slugs would be useful!
+freedomofabird Usually carry 2 slugs in my vest when hunting quail SC...there are wild pigs and black bear in the area.
Test fired slug at 40 yards were dead on in 4" target (Clay bird!)
@ Boochi1 would you recommend the 28 gauge for killing snakes..water moccasins, rattlers and ect. Also from your experience can a 410 shotgun be used to do the job and how far should I be to kill them..max range? Thanks and have a nice day
Nice video this reminds me of way back when I used to load my 12B cases with an old lee loader..Thanks for sharing.. ATB
Thanks CGL, hope you are well across the pond. I have not put much stuff up recently as I have been busy with work, and my camera has been playing up so not sure what to do...repair or buy a new one......neither of which I can really afford to do but......
This film was just done on a small cam, as against a dedicated video cam.
My boys are loving it and the duck and pheasant season is well underway over here so you never no! more vids soon hopefully!
All the best to you and yours, happy hunting
Great videos.
Question. I use cal 28 almost on any kind of animal. We have problems in finding Buck amunition, only #7.
We have to open the shell and chance the amunition, but the amount of powder I think Is critical. What size of lead ball do you recomend? The brand of the shells is Rio from Spain.
Hoping to receive an answer. 👍🙏
Yes we miss your videos! Do some videos with your 28 bore shotgun
Just need to get sorted with a vivid camera again! I wore the last one out! Thanks!!
Outstanding! 👍🏻
yes, from .410 to 8 bore, but you need to buy the conversion for whichever bore you want. At the moment I only use this gin for reloading 28 and 20.
Good instructional video
Thanks. Will get some more done soon! Problem with camera at mo!
hello I’m looking for a press as yours could you tell me or you got yours
cordially
Please make sure your son wears impact resistant safety glasses at all times whenn reloading or handling powder/primers, and washes his hands in warm soapy water, preferably with soft-bristled brush to remove all lead and powder residews. Lead is especially toxic for youngsters, as you know. Also, you might move your reloaders away from power outlets or any potential source of spark. Better Safe than Sorry. Cheers.
The little 28 gauge seems to be a lost shotgun cartridge, which is a shame, because it seems like a wonderful little game getter that could also be highly useful for defensive gunning (with the right loads and chokes) best wishes to you and yours sir :) .....post script, do any companies make rear breaking wad/shotcup combo's for the little 28? said wads/cups seem to be doing a great job in 12 and 20 gauge shells.
It’s gaining popularity and making a comeback.
And can you reload with fibre wad with this?
An overshot card would greatly improved the quality of your crimps.
They pattern superbly. That’s the most important thing for me.
Hi mate,
Great video. Just wondering how much is saved per box? 28 bore game cartridges seem to be about £10 a box of 25. It's ridiculous! I love my 28 bore to bits but at 2x the price per box of my 12b I'm struggling to justify taking it out! Cheers
+The man without a dog Certainly 20% cheaper, but it all depends on how many reloads you get, whether you can easily get once fired cases or you buy new, and whether you can make savings on bulk.
Yes you can reload fibre with this press, just a slightly different set up I believe, although I have never done it. It's all very convenient though as you never have to worry about the local gunshop having shells in, when you most need them. Thanjs
Can that thing reload any Gauge of cartridge?
Nice to see more vids foab , lets have more mole trapping when you can please .
I'm looking to buy some 28 gauge hulls. Who is selling them?
Not a clue search the internet
@@freedomofabird - I found one place to buy Remington 28 ga hulls, after a long search.
www.3on8supplies.com/-hulls.html
From my readings, folks contend that Remington hulls will endure less reloads than WinAA hulls.
I'm thinking that I don't shoot that much, and so I'll so with the Remingtion hulls, and when they wear out, buy more.
I don't know about Fiocchi, www.midwayusa.com/product/1013131793?pid=493146
or Cheddite hulls.www.midwayusa.com/product/1013111039?pid=513815

I use the 28gauge for the grive, lark, pigeon, dove and (when it happens) mallard duck
Snakes kill rodents and aid agriculture. They serve a valid purpose in the environment.
