I Remember this epic performance, seeing it live on TV in the Netherlands, 23 years old, I stood up and clapped in front of the TV, and the only thing that I could say was, Wow Wow !! , tears in my eyes. Now Im 46 years old, and again I have tears in my eyes. Wow !!

Actually it was about 26 seconds. Vanessa also hold a note for 25 seconds in the song Sun's Up. She is my Favorite singer in the World.

She did the whole legato for 30 seconds in the studio version actually. It goes from phrasing to a sustained C#5 that goes higher near the end.

@@pantherz9103 You're not biased. Believe me. Sydney 2000 was the first Olympic I saw as a toddler. It took me two decades to realize how outstanding it was compared to all the following Olympics.

How good is that last note!?! Not only does she hold it for about 20 minutes, but then without taking a breath she rises those last two notes at the end.

My dad and I attended the Olympics from the Eastern USA. Met some fellow Travelers, went to five events. After leaving the Olympic Stadium, we were part of a crowd of several hundred thousand people; it was an amazing sight. We did get to see part of the city and but not as much as we would have liked and we hoped to see more of the country, but we ran out of time. I hope I get to Perth.
Why underestimated,
on the contrary, she was very, very lucky to sing at the inauguration of such a great event, another matter is that she went unnoticed by the best music producers, they simply did not see anything extraordinary in her singing.
But she had the opportunity of a lifetime to be recognised, she had it.

In my opinion, the best, most touching and emotional moment of an Olympic Games ceremony ever. Unrepeatable, not only for the magnificent performance of Mrs. Amorosi but also for the impressive coordination in the deployment of that canvas of hundreds of square meters carried out in union by volunteers, athletes and the public. A symbol of what the song represents: Heroes of all kinds and of all times.

She is amazing. I heard her sing as 16 yr old at a Russian wedding party, before she was signed by anyone. It was a weird night but the thing that I will never forget was that voice.
She sang at my cousins bar mitzvah when she was around that age too. My sister and I apparently nagged her to sing Barbie Girl which was obviously a waste of her talents haha

21 years ago to the night in my hometown of Sydney! As a 19 year old I wish I appreciated how good this was at the time but I didn’t really focus on it like I have lately thanks to being able to watch it a few times on UA-cam. I’m 40 now and I am in awe of how she belted out these notes, especially the last one.
I’m not even a big Vanessa Amarosi fan but this is still one of the best live performances, even seeing it 21 years later.
Seriously, Vanessa's vocal capacity is extremely elite.
Even in her lower registers she still produces. That's pretty unusual for a female alto / soprano.
And she hits her notes every time. Not even slightly flat or sharp.
Considering the rubbish that was written for her previously, I don't blame her giving the game away.
Nonetheless she's an a tremendously good singer.

Aha..There was plenty of problems back in the 20th Century.. but I do miss the 90’s and early 00’s, certainly compared to the stressful current times. I’m Australian and the feel good factor of Sydney 2000 is a great memory but long forgotten here as well.
Out of all the songs performed at the Olympics, this is my number one for its beautiful message, triumphant and proud ambience and the amazing voice of Vanessa Amorossi. I love Arianna Grande and her ability to do whistle notes as much as Mariah Carey but with that last note, Vanessa surpassed her. Since the Olympics are coming to Paris, I hope a song as amazing as this will show up.
On another note, when I hear the song, I imagine Vanessa's voice coming from the voice of a maiden encouraging young warriors to get ready to fight off evil monsters and as they vanquish the last one, their village gives them a heroes welcome where the maiden continues to sing as the new heroes look into the sky

She said in rehearsal she started going down at the end of the song because of how long the note is and that she would have passed out if she didn't do that. Which implies she possibly sang this performance live.
@@Oliver2020. impossible. There are too many risks to allow artists to perform live. I read in an old article that while she did sing every single note, the performance was pre-recorded in stadium conditions, as per international events' regulations.
