  • WW'nTips-n-Tricks # 078: Climb Cuts
There are two types of cuts you can do with a router, conventional and climb. One can be very dangerous but like everything in the craft it has it's place, it has some advantages, sometimes....

Love your insights into woodworking. I wish I had seen this prior to having a huge breakout on the end grain of a cheese platter I was making. Although like any decent creative woodworker I modified my design and made a handle out of my mistake. You might make mention of router speed when using large diameter cutters. I'm pretty sure that played a part in my error. Keep up the good work!

Love this stuff. Climbcutting is an aquired skill, much like my old radial arm saw. BE CAREFUL!.........When I am listening with my headfones on I have to keep looking out my window to see who is coming up the driveway but it is always noise coming from your neighborhood. Hahaha sounds like a bizzy hood.

Did you lessen the volume of the router footage? I ask because it was quiet but more so because it sounded like you were cutting at a slower speed. Which got me wondering... My router is variable speed but I’ve never use it on anything but the highest speed. AKA air raid siren sound level. Wondering if I’ve been in the wrong on this with wood routing. Thanks!

I lowered the volume. I don't use the router at an uber speed much as there is a balance between chip size and heat buildup.

Right again...I've got one turning full tilt and it does help. God, I pity painters who do this everyday...Forgot, another great video!

Thank you for opening my eyes to this. I don’t use a router very often, I’ll keep this in mind.
Will this also apply to using a file?

Yep, it's always about grain direction.

I'm a big fan of climb cutting. I almost always climb cut when applying 1/8" roundovers and small chamfers.
