+Alinator420 Haha, tell me about it. No more fighting noobs. I've seen him in game a few times though. Don't know if it was really him but he was high level so who knows.
I C I think that historical accuracy in medieval fighting games means a lot and still you are a guy twice the size of your peons which you one shot. Not much for immersion on that side. also to me being able to fully control the upper body doesn't break immersion at all. Actually I think that immersion wise seeing the character in third person that does the same oriented strikes with no way to control them is immersion breaking on multiple points.
I C And that's fair, but as I said, combat against peons is the same as you would have in Batman: Arkham series, press a button to have a scripted animation. And for the Player versus Player I feel like the melee combat is really limited to a stance gameplay, with no real time swing manipulation. If you don't care about the the historical accuracy, which is obviosuly personal preference, you should at least care about the scripted animations and lock-on target kind of gameplay (and let's not forget third person, huge immersion break). I don't see in For Honor a good combat game, if anything you had to say Mordhau to impress me :D
I got to watch this tutorial every now and then to re-guide me back to how to play PROPERLY. For anyone watching this, listen to this guy, he is a pro and his guide is very effective.
Classy Man My dad came to visit me a few weeks ago and I showed him a video. Then suddenly he smacked the monitor mid-video with an envelope. Took me a few seconds to understand wtf he's doing. I expected comments on youtube, but I never expected to see a live reaction. It was beautiful.
Thank you for creating this video. It turned around my ability in game completely, and my understanding. Being able to turn the tables on LMB mashing idiots has made my day several times.
Great video, I was on the fence about buying this game, but now I see the combat is much more involved than I initially thought based on other videos I had watched. I had no idea there was so much subtlety to the combat, I'm really intrigued now!
Wow dude, this is the best tutorial I've seen for Chivalry and also the most flowing, fast paced, beautifully choreographed duels I've seen! You explained everything well. Really fantastic job! It's extremely helpful and you are very skilled :)
For a while it used to be hard to find good chivalry combat clips.. at least for me.. I don't know why I didn't think about going back to where a lot of us first learned lol.. it's so hard to explain how impressive and incredible this was to modern gamers.. or people that bounced off of it... And I haven't been able to see any good expression in 2, although my understanding of clickbait speech has improved so I might be able to rummage it up.. It just.. like.. This was special.. This should have at its most basic form become the only first-person melee combat system.. instead.. It would just.. like.. if Kingdom come deliverance 2 doubles down and still locks out The camera from combat.. oh man.. I'm almost expecting them to do it too.. like that mentality of being so close and then ruining every little bit of it when you had a perfect template right already there in 2012. Even dark Messiah is hard to go back to after having played chivalry.. I need to figure out how to mod it to separate out the directional keys.. But like the level of control here and the precision, it's the thing that separates The final outcome significantly, with DM I'm never sure where my attack is or what the range is on their attack because the feedback is so bad.. But honestly I didn't even want to go back and play that game because anytime I do something like that, it ruins modern games, and makes me sad because I know I'll never get anything like it again.. same thing with this... Modern gamers are so fn boring.
Wow, I just started playing and was trying to understand exactly how realistic this game could be. Thank you for showcasing such important information on timing and dueling! Please make another video for maces and other blunt weapons since they're slower and utilize different tactics. Thanks again!
Very helpful video. Learning this guide allowed me to get more kills and less deaths. You really have to practice to get good. Decided to make Man-at-Arms as my main character.
I'm glad I finally found a video that goes into the finer details. Many of the vids out there are button-mashing and face-rolling, and that gets old after a while :)
*slow claps* very good fighting! I just started playing Chivalry and got a few tips from some experts in a guild I am try to join but this helped me out so much ^-^ now lets see if I can apply this in an actual fight. Please continue this series ^-^ these are very good tutorials
This is way more complex than your teasers have let on. And I'm really happy about that. Personally I'm not skilled enough at these games to pull these crazy things off, but I sure will have fun trying to do so. Keep up the good work, and I hope to see the game on sale soon.
This video has helped me tremendously. I appreciate you taking your time to make this useful bit of information. I've taken 3 on 1 before and came out on top because of this video :D
Definitely change for FOV or Field of View or Field of Vision. By putting it at higher levels you will be granted more visibility therefore allowing you to see more of whats going on around you. Although it may seem weird or uncomfortable at first, it is definitely something that you need to get used to in order to be effective in combat.
This is very good LOOL. The only thing is that you didn't mention the alternative swing mode whereas you can also bypass shielded players from the left :) But this video is amazing!
There is another technique that I have been doing as a knight with the Longsword, Combo-feints. Pretty sure you already know about this, but I normally feint-then Alt Overhead combo'd with the horizontal swing, then, I feint a stab, and answer with another overhead. This has worked extremely well, and I'm currently rank 36 and I have taken down people much higher rank than myself.
I love this game. I think its quite underrated game, but i have never seen so sotisficated medieval fight system like this. Fake attacks, maneuvers, right timing of strikes, lots of types of attacks, lots of kinds of weapons - this is great mix of this nice game. Sometimes i like blood rage fights, some time i like more tactics duels and every day i can learn something new from better opponents.
wow! it's just so usefull and entertaining at the same time! I loved to watch you fighting. I watched many chivalry videos and usually it's just wild slashing. and most of the players can only block if you are slow and if they're lucky. this... was FAST! even with twohanders. I will use your tips :) thanks for this awesome tutorial!
As a men-at-arms with a quarter staff I know a 7 hit combo that is absolutely killer. Swings so fast that it almost can beat a block every time and if I do get blocked I can always just dodge out of the way. Besides a few times I tried to dodge with no stamina I have not been beat. But I'll be damned I knowing that ONE GOOD HIT will kill me doesn't keep me on edge
Actually I have played AoC, but only for around 100hours. But my main Melee-FPS experience came from Mortal Online and such. Which isn't nearly as in depth as this game is, but still has similiar moves. And I'm sure that there are more tricks, we'll do a 2.1 version in the future until we start with #3, to cover up some of the new tricks we've discovered over the time, since we're waiting for the duel mode to do the third one.
Great videos man. I've been looking forward to playing this game but didin't want to start off clueless. I'm buying it now and I should be cutting some heads off really soon :) thanks
I like forcing them to block and then making them swing at me after, then I mouse drag into a blow, it's really effective with quick weapons like claymore, billhook or bearded axe, you usually get contact on their swing but your blow costs them much more health. After seeing this I'm going to try and work the feint stab into that routine because if I catch them off-guard with the stab, the mouse dragged swing is enough to finish them, with this I can get a better chance of a first stab then go for the mouse drag swing instead of relying on them to be unprepared.
+gabycashy5 you can't do a 360 from a straight view, but if you begin like in 45 degree, you also hit at the end again. It's like a drag, pretty effective
Trouble is when I come up against a player who ducks, he tends to do it every time like I wont learn, so I just look down when I attack and they wonder why they are getting hit lol
Constructive Criticism time: When reading your lines, make sure to always keep a pace that's easy to follow, and pronounce your words as clearly as possible. There were a few times during the video that I struggled to understand what you were saying. Other than that, top of the line video mate!
I watched this when I was rank 0, and was very impressed. I didn't know how to pull off more than half the things in here. Now, I'm rank 35 and realized that now, I use all these tactics XD
I dare you to try the parry at 1:22 with today's build. You're not even glancing towards where the sword is coming from, and yet it is still a successful block. What about that "have the tip of the enemy's sword in the middle of your screen"? A well put together tutorial nevertheless, thank you. Minus the "classy" feints - use them if you want, but don't call them "classy"
(2) So you have to actually SLOW DOWN your mouse movement to a certain "sweet spot" (while swinging) where you will turn a lot faster. If you go above that sweet spot you will notice your turning speed will come to a crawl. This is something you have to experiment for yourself and develop muscle memory (if you have not figured it out already).
The only problem with adjusting your FOV past, say, 95 is that Chivalry adjusts both your horizontal and your vertical FOV, leading to a kind of Fish-eye effect. This has the negative effect of increasing the perceived distance to your target; where you thought you were in range to attack, you were not, and vice-versa. You can compensate for this as you play the game but it's definitely challenging where it doesn't need to be.
I only use the ducking (AND aming down, to minimize hitbox) in duels or when it's the only way out. Most of the time I play MaA and I can dodge out and launch a safe-counter attack right after. You can see me dodge underneath the axe in Shara&Noxian 8 when Noxian puts a bolt in his head right after I ducked underneath his attack. If I'd play Vanguard or any other class I'd use it more often since I can't dodge by the "MaA-Dodge". But you can only really duck underneath slashes. Sometimes OHS too
This is usually lag, or the fact that your weapon doesn't have the same reach as his. Bear in mind that using a hatchet versus a longsword means he has the advantage when you keep your distance. Shorter weapons require you to keep the distance close.
I assume you're talking about 1:44 it's about trading counter attacks (they trigger a combo-speed attack) like a faster version of a regular attack. And you have to be really quick with parrying when getting stabbed from a counter attack, they're really fast. And I waited a second and use a "non-counter" like waiting instead of attacking to trigger the combo and you can see him raise the weapon to parry since he expected a fast parry-combo-stab (aka counter-stab).
Huh. I'm kicking myself now because I should have known that. I believe I actually did know that, yet for some reason (most likely because it's not a part of my habitual vocabulary) I had forgotten. This is especially troubling to me because, not only am I a "stickler" for precise terminology, but because I took fencing in middle school! "Feign", Sorted. Cheers and thanks. :)
watch your back in 1st person like pushing a cart on dark forest but in 3rd person people can spin around if they see a person behind them or they can have a bigger FOV to see sneaky archers of fights you can help in
To everyone complaining about feinters, it's rather simple. If someone has proven themselves to be a feinter, then directly attack them after they parry you. It's a strategy, not a tactic. It works wonders.
I just love how much the mechanics changed. Most people nowadays 2 hit Vanguards, and most of the time, I haven't seen one last for more than 5 seconds. Oh yeah, not to mention that you get a knockback effect if your stamina bar is completely drained. Why can't we have these epic long battles again?
This video really helped me, buyed the game a while a go but had some problems at starting, now i should be some kind of easier to win a duel and dont get killed so often :( sry for my bad english ^^
Feints are not unblockable and I'll give you a reason why; When you complete the windup of a swing (when the windup is complete you can not feint your attack) there is a grunting noise but if you feint before the windup is complete there is no grunting noise. You'll have to react very quickly after you hear the grunting noise and it can get harder if the opponent is accelerating the swing but feints are not impossible to block. Also you'll have to get used to listen for this grunting noise :)
I love how the very tutorials for this game suggest that you use techniques like mouse dragging, and players call these 'exploits.' It's a built-in game play mechanic, not an exploit. Same with feints, but I feel like feints are too easy to spam and hard to deal with. Unless you have amazing reflexes, you have about a 50/50 shot at properly guessing if the guy is feinting or not. There should be a cooldown or something to prevent someone from spamming it.
Helene, You need to aim for the tip of the enemies weapon in order to block correctly. Your shield or held weapon block is not all encompassing, so you need to direct it appropriately. -pWnDankosity (lvl-40)
Nice, this thought me why my enemies seem to be 10 faster with heavy weapons and why they do random spins, i still however have very bad timing and reflexes when it comes to blocking and extremelly bad luck when it comes to being stuned right before block (normally by random arrows)
I have the same problem. I essentially have given up trying to perform delayed strikes for the moment. I can't understand how it can be done. I still get along fine. Even using slow, clumsy dual handed weapons I can still get the job done with fancy feinting and footwork. Sure would be nice to learn delayed strikes, though.
I've seen very few people on this game doing this. Most of the time opponents are quite clever, when they're not, they're usually big cowards who only attack when superior in number.
You must be a Age of Chivalry veteran. I am one myself. You spilled many secrets out there. Luckily, not everything. There are a few tricks that I would like to keep to myself, haha.
Gotta love how people complain about feints, yet condone the use of bugs to gain an advantage.
3 years later, it's hilarious that this used to be "advanced"
+Alinator420 unlike you they didn't have tutorial videos, the playstyle evolved as they got better.
+Alinator420 Haha, tell me about it. No more fighting noobs. I've seen him in game a few times though. Don't know if it was really him but he was high level so who knows.
What exactly changed that these moves are now bad way to go?

how to tell if the enemy is feinting: if he grunts, its a swing. no grunt is a feint.
Reven619 or just git gud
@@TsoiIzAlive that that is.. that is getting good.. That's that's literally getting good. Get smart?
EXCELLENT video everything you need to know in a short and simple way. Best tutorial in chivalry for sure
The best combat tutorial I've found so far. Really covers a lot of the more advanced skills. Thanks for this.
What about people with 170 FOV that face the ground and spin around. How do u deal with that.
and when they have dpi and ingame sensitivity over 9000
Dominub get in range, lmb. Ez pz
Foc4ccin4 yep do drags, rainbows, whirlwinds, waterfalls. fuck them bitches right up
Dominub Your profile picture mad em think I had a fly on my computer screen. then I scrolled and knew it was fake.

its so cool and fascinating to see such pros fighting against each other...
their reaction time is incredible!

Excellent tutorial man, very well composed, straight to the point and delightfully insightful. Helped me improve my game a lot!

Been wanting a game like this since I was like 10. Hopefully more games will make an effort on improving medieval combat.
This is way more complex than your teasers have let on. And I'm really happy about that.

especially the last fight shows how epic this game can be
Very in depth tutorial! Good job you look like a great fighter!
ALL ASSUMING THERE IS NO LAG. I think this is one of the only games that I understand lag-rage.
It has the same graphic of Half Life 2 and Garry's Mod, if you can run these games you can only fear server lag :)
CreeperAssassin2 [ITA] That's what I'm referring to: every player on 100+ ping is unplayable.
Yep, you are right
Dead is the deal thwn
Actually I have played AoC, but only for around 100hours. But my main Melee-FPS experience came from Mortal Online and such. Which isn't nearly as in depth as this game is, but still has similiar moves.
And I'm sure that there are more tricks, we'll do a 2.1 version in the future until we start with #3, to cover up some of the new tricks we've discovered over the time, since we're waiting for the duel mode to do the third one.

You can also press the right mouse button to feint instead of the Q key.
This video series really kicks ass!! Keep it coming!
Thanks for posting these! Super helpful for us Steam Summer Sale LMB'ers to actually learn to play properly.
Claymore feinting is the bane of my existence
I like forcing them to block and then making them swing at me after, then I mouse drag into a blow, it's really effective with quick weapons like claymore, billhook or bearded axe, you usually get contact on their swing but your blow costs them much more health.
After seeing this I'm going to try and work the feint stab into that routine because if I catch them off-guard with the stab, the mouse dragged swing is enough to finish them, with this I can get a better chance of a first stab then go for the mouse drag swing instead of relying on them to be unprepared.
saw a guy doing 360 while crouching swinging and even jumping sometime told me his sensitivity is at 30
+gabycashy5 you can't do a 360 from a straight view, but if you begin like in 45 degree, you also hit at the end again. It's like a drag, pretty effective
+Dersum because it's not
+Dersum because it's not
it is, it is. If you beginn a weapon-attack, the mouse speed get's locked
well not that guy because he can do 2 or 3 360 in a row while blocking/attacking
I agree completely, and many times being a noob is fun and refreshing =) always new things to explore, learn and get better at.
Yo dude, you just earned another subscriber. That last fight was game of thrones worthy
Awesome video and great tips from a clearly skilled player. Thanks for this!
that ducking is so funny the players get so mind fucked when they dont expect it XD
Default keybind for blocking is the right mousebutton. Imo the most comfortable way to block.
I watched this when I was rank 0, and was very impressed. I didn't know how to pull off more than half the things in here.
Now, I'm rank 35 and realized that now, I use all these tactics XD
I knew this game was good but watching this was a real treat. Just bought it off GMG, can't wait to give it a spin.
I dare you to try the parry at 1:22 with today's build. You're not even glancing towards where the sword is coming from, and yet it is still a successful block. What about that "have the tip of the enemy's sword in the middle of your screen"?

So you have to actually SLOW DOWN your mouse movement to a certain "sweet spot" (while swinging) where you will turn a lot faster. If you go above that sweet spot you will notice your turning speed will come to a crawl.
This is something you have to experiment for yourself and develop muscle memory (if you have not figured it out already).
Y'see this?
This is about fifty times better than the (bugged) in game tutorial.
Wow, I had no idea the sword play could be so dynamic. I'm really impressed. I need to find a partner and practice!
The only problem with adjusting your FOV past, say, 95 is that Chivalry adjusts both your horizontal and your vertical FOV, leading to a kind of Fish-eye effect. You can compensate for this as you play the game but it's definitely challenging where it doesn't need to be.
Those are some good tips, some I have already used and some I will definitely use. Good video.
that video was perfect.
its not that hard once you get used to the games mechanics and controls, and im just lvl 14 atm.
+Flugmorph Yea this is outdated, By alot.
φ Wehrmachts Fury
why? havent played recently.
Flugmorph WELL! most of the skill now is breaking animations and spinning like you are on crack
I only use the ducking (AND aming down, to minimize hitbox) in duels or when it's the only way out. Most of the time I play MaA and I can dodge out and launch a safe-counter attack right after. great tutorials so far. Downloading the game at the moment from a steam sale :) game looks great!

Incredible tutorial! Now I understand where I failed, and where I did good.
Epic demonstration at the end! A+
that last fight is truly awesome
watch your back in 1st person like pushing a cart on dark forest but in 3rd person people can spin around if they see a person behind them or they can have a bigger FOV to see sneaky archers of fights you can help in
Wow Finally a Chiv tutorial that isnt someone just complaining about other classes and weapons they dont like, basically that are not Vanguard.
I have to recognize your skill sir. I'm rank 44 and this is the first video I ever seen with all the combat techniques.
1.connect on steam
2.search for chivalry
3-get it ;)
this game is TONs of fun, immersion and great gameplay without shitty HUD infos. i love it^^
To everyone complaining about feinters, it's rather simple. If someone has proven themselves to be a feinter, then directly attack them after they parry you. It's a strategy, not a tactic. It works wonders.
Yes, I fraps with 60fps constantly. Even tho youtube only allows 29,97 fps, it will make the video look more fluid, especially when adding slowmotion.
Very good video! Nothing to critisize but maybe a summary in the description-box ;-)
Amazing tutorial, exactly what i was looking for.
Awesome video, really helped a newbie out.
DAYUMN! these tips are going to truly help me! :D i have a good feeling about them
Up your mouse sensitivity. When swinging your sensitivity drops lower than usual so by upping it you can move it quicker.
Wow what a great video!!!!!!! excellent teaching! thanks!
That final fight was so intense man.
This game is really intense. It has a ridiculous learning curve :D
How are you so good already!? wow thanks for these tutorials. Very informative and helpful.
Excellent series! Thank you very much!
I hope this game gets supppper popular and this becomes the normal for all melee in games and MMOs. that would be fucking awesome!
Wow it makes more fun to watch you play this game than to play by my self xD
I love how the very tutorials for this game suggest that you use techniques like mouse dragging, and players call these 'exploits.' It's a built-in game play mechanic, not an exploit.
Same with feints, but I feel like feints are too easy to spam and hard to deal with. Unless you have amazing reflexes, you have about a 50/50 shot at properly guessing if the guy is feinting or not. There should be a cooldown or something to prevent someone from spamming it.
Helene,
You need to aim for the tip of the enemies weapon in order to block correctly. Your shield or held weapon block is not all encompassing, so you need to direct it appropriately. -pWnDankosity (lvl-40)
the first fight was wild all the blocking and stuff
Nice vid. How about some tips on fighting multiple foes, group fights etc?
Wow, they need something like this in the in-game tutorial
outstending fight at the end! bravo!
Most of the time opponents are quite clever, when they're not, they're usually big cowards who only attack when superior in number.
that delayed mouse drag is a killer
thnx for your videos. they've really helped me out alot
You must be a Age of Chivalry veteran. I am one myself. You spilled many secrets out there. Luckily, not everything. There are a few tricks that I would like to keep to myself, haha.
