One of the coolest parts about Frieren destroying the barrier is how it reinforces the themes of the episode. Destroying the barrier wasn't a strategic move. Frieren started analyzing the barrier after she heard Kanne talking about how she could use her water spell to its full potential if only she had some rain. This was before they even caught the stille and then got it stolen, before they even had a plan to steal it. So why did she break the barrier, if not to catch the stille or recover it after being stolen? Was it to get Serie's attention? Nope, it was also before she even knew Serie was involved. She literally invented a new spell and brought down Serie's barrier just for fun, to see Kanne's water spell pop off. Magic for joy, a mage of a peaceful era. That's Frieren.
I also think that Frieren has genuinely really been taking the mentor role to heart ever since taking Fern in as her student. In the same way that she finds joy in discovering new magic, she finds joy in fostering the younger generations to become accomplished mages in their own right and discover their own joy in magic.

this is why i never get tired of rewatching frieren. even just a seemingly throwaway line of frieren analyzing the barrier "since yesterday evening" adds depth to the story. every piece of dialogue has purpose.

The music "Frieren The Slayer", which plays when Frieren breaks the barrier, had been played before in the show and will be played again later, but for some reason, I feel like that scene is THE scene that deserves this music. I like the Denken vs Frieren fight. Man was using all the right moves against a superior opponent, but Frieren had thrown out an extra zoltraak during that volley that would catch Denken when he wasn’t paying attention. She then took full advantage of that opening to finish the fight.
Denken also fell for Frieren suppressing her mana. He would never have chosen to try to overpower her defenses if he knew she had the mana to keep up a barrier around her whole self for that amount of time.
One of the first class mages explicitly said whether they found a stile or not would basically be down to luck. Which is why Denken is trying to steal one rather than hope they find one.

The best part for me is that she didnt break the barrier to show off or anything. She could have easily flown up there and wiped the floor with richter but she wanted to give her girls some water so they could go all out
"they'd just do what everyone else has been doing" Everyone else got lucky. Only Frieren really got a plan and that plan fucked up everybody else's chance to get a bird through skill. Every other team either just happened to have the knowledge of the proper situation and/or spell like Wirbel (and even then he needed to be lucky to find one, especially after Lawine and Kanne's shenanigans) and Fern. And having the right spell for this situation is essentially luck too since during a normal human lifespan you can only learn so many spells (Frieren had the proper spell too but in her case she knows so many spells through her long life that it's not really luck). The whole point of the test is that a few teams are going to get lucky and get a Stille and everyone else will attack them for it, this isn't a bug or a freak event, it's the entire point of the test and the only reason it's a "fair" test because otherwise it relies almost entirely on luck: attacking other teams *is* the test, that's why you can't just win as soon as you have the bird but need to keep it until dusk the next day. On top of that Denken's group don't have mana anymore, they can't catch a stille without mana. They can however sneak up on other mages or find exhausted ones.

I (briefly) felt bad for Richter. He could have killed or severely injured them but choose not to. I actually think he's a pretty sympathetic character, in a burnt out worker kinda way.
Unpopular opinion: Richter is just as cool, if not cooler, than most of the side characters. He's not personable, but neither is Land, as well as some others. Half of the test takers threatened others but nobody meant it, all before he finished his fight with Kanne and Lawinne. Fern lied about killing Ehre and Land just paralyzed Scharf. Even Frieren threatened Denken, yet Richter was the only one of ALL of them to admit that he didn't want to hurt them, just wanting to make them submit. With all that info given beforehand, he still is viewed as the meanest character.
Everything you say is true, however... Spoilers for the rest of the season: I'd argue that at this point, Richter is still pretty bland. The next episode, and especially the 27th, do far more to make him likeable and interesting than the in-exam portions. (this is also kinda true of Land. He got to be cool in episode 20, but it's the extra stuff we learn later that really makes me want to see more of him.)
We know Denken is over 70 yeah (SPOILER) - - - - - - He says that his wife died in his early or mid 20s and that was before Serie started distributing the privilege which was 50 years ago so he's at least around 75, possibly slightly more.

And time and again the show puts those elements in a second place. 1st place is always taken by the writing - char. development, world building, relationship development.

In my opinion, comparing the chuunin exam to this, is like comparing a doughnut to a 5-layer wedding cake.
It was... fine, but this is just excellent.
Serie and Frieren are literary foils. The purpose of Serie outside of plot is to highlight Frieren's beliefs by comparison to hers.
Not sure how far ahead these are recorded so maybe you already know, but a 2nd season of Frieren has been confirmed.

She was in fact not able to fight richter. She had to have Shonen protag cheats in order to win lol
