- An advent calendar can be a very tedious and challenging woodworking project. Making 24 doors is not something that I have the patience for. Here's one you can make in a day. You can even get the family involved if you want: get them to paint ornaments!

@zobook Spray adhesive. If you spray it on the paper and let it set for a couple minutes before attaching it to the wood, it'll come off like a post-it note.
@jwmicsr I use Elmer's Multi-Purpose Spray Adhesive. Should be available in most hardware stores/ home centers.

great idea Steve!! Unfortunately for me, I don't have anyone who would be willing to decorate my ornamental pieces so it would take me till Christmas to make one...maybe next year. Thanks for the inspiration...you are keeping me busy and that is what I need.
Brilliant! Fantastic! I am so making this advent calendar for my daughter when she's old enough to love it. A lot of the charm lies in customizing the ornaments to suit each kid's (or each family's, or whatever) favourite themes.

I saw that trick with the beer bottle cap, and actually said "That's bloody btilliant". I swear, half of all woodworking is just knowing the next "dumb trick"... brilliant!

I think I'll try to paint the nubs that stick out of the tree, maybe silver...or gold...or both.
I'd never heard of an Advent Calendar until Marc Spagnuolo made one last year. I guess it's just not something that was a tradition with my family.

Only spray glue one side! If you spray glue both the paper and MDF the template will be impossible to remove!
@decom1885 Thanks. Basically, always ask yourself this: "How can I do this simpler?" It may take some time, but it's human nature to overcomplicate things.

It would make more sense if it went from 1 to 24, instead, counting the days. That's how all advent calendars are here, at least! :)

woah.. that video got me confused in the beginning. I was like "dafuq? Why did he make number one the star? I would have done 24".. however.. it took me a while to realize, that you seem to count from 24 to 1. We do the exact opposite over here in germany :)
That would be cool if you added a drawer to keep all of the ornaments in...
I don't get Hershey but it's a nice idea which doesn't spoil kids with plastic crap. :-)
what kind of glue do you use to stick your template? it sits firmly but still comes off real easy

Steve, as I lack a few of the tools that you have, would it be possible for you to cut out the major cuts for me and I can pay you for the parts done. Also the routering? I think this would be an awesome advent for our home. I can of course do the cutting for the dowels and assembly. Hi i don't drink beer would a cider bottle top do ?great idea! if I was over criticle I would say as this is the 29th o nov here in sunny [ he lied] Scottish land its a tad late to make me thinks .but hey another great project ,could the back of the tree be dimpled to keep your balls in place when storing, ho ho ho ,
