As a usc fan. Growing up in Los Angeles...I loved watching his teams in 2007-2008. One hell of a coach!
He sucked😂
@@Grimreaper1900 Imagine if you worked for Jim Tressel, Bob Stoops and Bill Snider. You were named the top assistant coach in the country, you took the University of Kansas to the God damn Orange Bowl and some clown on UA-cam thinks you suck. What would you think of such a person? You should do something productive with your life.
@@mikeabel7577 cry?
Guy was overrated. He had one good year due to the easiest schedule ever and then went back to mediocre. Terry Allen had more top 25 finishes than mark at ku
As a Kentucky fan I despise Kansas in everything, but the fact that Mark Mangino took them from 2-10 and 1-11 seasons to not only average, but to a New Years Six bowl victory over V-Tech is one of the most commendable things I can think of. It’s such a shame that his time at Kansas was cut short because the man seemed to know what he was doing.
He was fired because of multiple complaints by players and their parents about his verbal and physical (not sexual) abuse of players. That is not how Kansas treats players.
Loved watching Kansas in that 2007 and 2008 season. I know Mangino got hate because of yelling stuff at the players, and it was the same thing with Leach at Texas Tech with the closet thing. Ever since both of these guys were let go, those schools have never been the same and have never come close to what they accomplished there.
Pre Alabama dynasty was so fun because so many teams were in the hunt.
I wanted Syracuse to hire him a few times after he left Kansas . Manngino Was a great coach and got great talent . He got the Mike Leached
@Pen Island accusations are just that. Without proof you have nothing but words.
@@JSchaffer214 There's no actual proof of The Penn State / Sandusky scandal. There's no actual proof of The Nassar Michigan State scandal. Just "accusations". Does that mean they didn't happen either?? Lol What a moronic ignorant take.
@@chadneumann2772 yeah, no evidence. Except reports by both schools that got covered up for years and DNA evidence. And, you know, literal confessions in both cases. I remember someone had a sign when Ku played against OKstate that said "Mangino is thinkin Arbys".

I think of him someone who really did a great job at Kansas
All I know about Kansas football is two VERY LARGE people: this coach, and Gilbert, Gravedigger Brown.
Ask Kansas they've been crap since he left lol
College football was better when mark mangino was part it
Hate him, horrible human being and the most corrupt athletic department in the country made him rich.

2007 and 2008 were some of the funnest years in college football.
2007 it was something like 5-7 weeks in a row the #2 team lost. There were so many teams that a fresh faced CFB fan (let's say 15 years and younger) wouldn't believe was top 5 at one point or another that year. I'm talking teamz Boston College, South Florida, Kansas, California, Mizzu, West Virginia. Some of these teams are trash at best, some are mediocre at best over the last 5 years.
The great part about it was that so many teams were in the mix. This was notable teams in BCS poll in 2007 and 2008
2007
11-2 Virginia Tech
12-2 Missouri
11-2 USC
12-1 Kansas
11-2 West Virginia
12-1 Hawaii
11-3 Boston College
11-2 BYU
9-4 Illinois
Now how many times have any of these teams reached this record again? Of those, many of them have done it more than once since then?
Again, notables in 2008 that 15 and unders probably wouldn't think would be here, minus the ones I mentioned in 2007
2008
12-1 Texas
11-2 TCU
12-1 Boise St
11-2 Texas Tech
9-4 Oregon St
9-4 Georgia Tech
Now tell me how many of those have reached that record since then, and how many of those that did have done it more than once?
I'm getting so nostalgic just thinking about it.
07 season was crazy that waa back when I use to hang out BW3s pounding beers watching football all day Saturday and Sunday. I feel old
Life goes quick. 2013 is when I started watching CFB religiously and that felt like just yesterday
I started watching CFB back in the late 80s early 90s back when Hayden Fry was still coaching Iowa. I'm 38
2007 when BW3s was still good.
Scott I genuinely appreciate you putting this video together for us KU supporters. Like many KU football fans, I have endured the last decade of bad football and with the recent hiring of the new AD Travis Goff from Northwestern and the new Head Football Coach Lance Liepold, we are all hoping for a new an exciting era. Your reporting on the subject was fair (kudos to you, a Mizzou fan, for not taking cheap shots but instead stating the facts) and attempting to tell the true story of what happened to Mark Mangino. For my money, he was the best football coach in the history of the University of Kansas and there have been some pretty good ones. One thing I will state on KU's behalf when it comes to the football history of the school, (you mentioned that it has never been good),was that they have had some good teams over the decades. Starting with the 1940's and the Ray Evans-led Jayhawks who won regularly during the post-war years. Then during the mid-1960's, the Jayhawks had teams that featured All Americans like John Hadl, Gayle Sayers and Bobby Douglas. The 1967-Orange Bowl team featured John and Junior Riggins who lost a heartbreaker to Penn State on a too many men on the field call during a goal line stand. The mid-1970's team with Nolan Cromwell QB-ing the Bud Moore led wishbone offense was dominating the Big-8 until Cromwell suffered a season-ending knee injury during the Oklahoma game at KU off of a cheap-shot hit out of bounds by an Oklahoma D-back named Anderson. The 1980's teams coached by Don Famborough had a decent amount of success, but couldn't beat Nebraska and Oklahoma. The 1990's teams coached by Glenn Mason won several bowl games. True they've had their struggles, and haven't even been mediocre at times, but they've also had times where they've prospered. The mistake that cost Mangino his job at KU was a thoughtless comment he made out of frustration about one of his players who had routinely disappointed him. The comment was unacceptable to the KU Administration and no opportunity for an apology or retraction was given to him as they (KU Administration) was looking for a reason to get rid of Mangino. Sadly, NONE of those same administrators are working at KU now. Mangino was the best coach in KU history and I am grateful for what he did for the football program. Thank you Coach M!
One of the most underrated ever.
Great video. I've wondered what happened to Mangino, he was an excellent coach. No one has ever come close to the same level of success with Kansas.
It's crazy that Kansas actually used to be relevant no wonder they used to be good
Is this comment made by a fourth grader Jesus
@@shrezzy0940 what I'm not a Fourth grader
They had one good year
You should do a video like this on Ralph Friedgen, dude was ironically pretty big himself but he took Maryland from the worst team in the ACC to 3 straight 10 win seasons and eventually got fired after going 9-4, arguably one of the worst coaching fires ever
Yeah…..
Thst was a dumb move
I recall Ralph & Mike both coached during the same time
I remember the big man at Kansas. Honestly wondering from time to time. Happened to the big man. Great upload. I found this randomly.
Old school coaches always talk a bunch of trash and kids today are just a little soft
Scott. I know your a college football guy. But maybe one day. You can do a video on the best non-football atmospheres. Mississippi State Baseball is at the top of the list and they deserve a video or 2.
HAIL STATE
Hail State!
I played for him and graduated from KU. Great coach and have nothing but respect for the man.
Oh really do you have an insta?
@@ScottFisherCFB No Sir, I don’t
Mangino is to KU football what Mike Leach was to TT football. Both coaches were the best thing to ever happen to each program, and now both programs suck again.
Mangino was overrated. Glen mason had more top 25 finishes at ku in the same amount of time.
Oh how I wish Mizzou maintained its rivalry with KU. Mizzou would be up by who knows how many wins
They finally got a coach who made them good & look how they treated him all because a couple of weak players couldn't handle tough love they are getting what they deserve I hope they never get good again
**Side Note** 3:45 Philip Rivers was QB of that NC state team. (Probably why they ONLY made it to the tangerine bowl.)
What happened to him? He won the Orange Bowl. It was great. If I had known that KU was going to win the Orange Bowl in what would have been my third year there I would have studied harder. Be that as it may I enjoyed watching that season immensely, as immensely as Mark Mangino's figure. I still can't watch a Mark Mangino tribute video without crying. Thanks Coach Mangino!!
I remember that Kansas/Mizzou game, and just how bitterly cold it was at that game.
Mizzou's Jeremy Macklin had an incredible game.
And Chas Daniel
Still pissed they fired him for some pretty fuckin' weak accusations. The 7 game skid was due to losing a shitload of talent to the NFL that could not immediately be replaced.
The '07 defensive backfield included Aqib Talib and Chris Harris Jr as cornerbacks that would later pair up again to win a Super Bowl with the Broncos. Safety Darrel Stuckey had a great career with San Diego, and though his counterpart FS Justin Thornton didn't get a shot in the NFL, he actually matched Talib in interceptions through most of the year.
Also, my favorite player to watch in '07 was LT Anthony Collins. An absolute beast that could take out 2 guys every time we ran the ball to his side. He had a high ankle sprain for the Missouri game, and it may very well have been the difference.
Reesing still had the offensive talent, but the young defense on the field his senior year wasn't doing him any favors.
Mangino ultimately would have reloaded the roster, but as 2007 was a surprise to everyone there wasn't an immediate stable of similar talent to plug into many key positions.
Since then, the university has been plenty willing to pony up the cash to be a good program, but the decision makers don't know football and keep betting on the wrong horse.
I do think that Les Miles finally righted the ship from a long standing scholarship issue involving taking too many juco players each year. By taking no juco players in his second class it left him with an extremely young team for his second year, but it was an investment for future wins that the administration was willing to suffer through. Though the scandal from his LSU days got him fired, that investment is still in place to make Lance Leipold look like a miracle worker.
Leipold has 6 players following him over from a great Buffalo squad, and a seventh recruit that switched his commitment to Kansas. Adding those guys into a great class that Miles pulled in should finally give them the solid foundation for getting back to playing good football.
Believe it or not, I'm finally looking forward to watching Kansas football again.
i hope y’all finally get to watch a decent team again
Kansas has a crap football program and when you do, you don't fire a coach like this, you get rid of the disgruntled players.
A great time to be a college football fan
Mangino got fired because he had success. The big money Kansas basketball donors did not want football getting too much attention. So as soon as an excuse presented itself they put a ton of pressure on the administration to fire him.
Whoah, Bill Snyder resembles ALF actor Max Wright who played Willie Tanner.
I think Maryland basically fired their coach ralph friedgen due to presentation even when he was winning. His last year he went 9-3. The word was this guy was fired for that and the complaints gave Kansas a reason.
As always great video!
O I thought this was about Andy Reid.
He coached philly and Kansas at the same time
He got most of his early-season wins against cupcakes. Had MU beaten Oklahoma that year they would have played in the NC.
Would love to see a what happened to by position and draft class. As an example, the 2016 draft class of WR's as a whole has been largely a bust outside of Michael Thomas, Tyler Boyd, Sterling Shepard and the oft injured Will Fuller. The RB's have had a lot more success. Also that year the QB class was mediocre at best. A few decent backups but Goff and Wentz have sort of hit their crossroads.
I loved watching Kansas and Mizzou in 2007. That game they played at Arrowhead that year was so fun. Sloppy, muddy, snow flurries whole game. I wish theyd renew that rivalry game, and not home and home but to be played always at Arrowhead.
Small problem. They didn't beat Mizzou in 2009 by a last second field goal. They scored a touchdown with 27 seconds left on 4th and 7, 26 yard pass, Reesing to Meyer, and then an extra point to go up by 3 points. Mizzou had a last second field goal attempt to try and tie, but it was either partially blocked or the kicker just didn't kick it well and he came up short on 54 yard attempt.
It was a great game.
This man really made KU watchable
Love your vids, and the song as well. What's it called?
I worked at a buffet in Lawrence. Jaysus it was astounding the pounds of food Mark ate. Whole sides of beef, tubs of mashed potatoes, gallons of Mac and cheese…and buckets of gravy. My Gawd he was an eater.

4:08, I think everyone held their breath in that Texas game :)
Yep Mangino was the last time Kansas football was relevant (I think now they haven't won a conference road game in a decade)

Wow, he rubbed elbows with actual good coaches unlike Kingsbury who lucked up into the Cardinals.
Got that stay puff marshmallow man build on deck
I think a big reason he was fired was throwing furniture at players, not paying his parking tickets for parking in handicapped parking and the fact he tried to assault a student parking attendant for trying to give him a ticket for parking in handicapped parking.
It was rumored that Mangino and Bill Self DID NOT get along behind the scenes. In interviews and in the public square they showed support for each other, but they butted heads a lot because of athletic spending. Mangino thought the KU athletic department spent too much on basketball relative to the football program he was trying to build. Meanwhile, Bill Self being someone who doesn't like sharing the spotlight, wasn't very enthused when the Hawks won that Orange Bowl, so what did Self respond with? Well, he won the damn NATTY for basketball. Then magically, two years later, Mangino is FIRED, and KU football is literally in the seventh layer of CFB Hell. KU also hasn't won a basketball natty since.
Pat McAfee show brought me here🤣
That Kansas team was the most bizarre team ever
This title is wild WTF 😂😂😂😂
The Big 12 was the best conference in football that season. That's why I want Kansas to be competitive again.
this is my fav video of yours lol
The title is hysterical!
How can his players respect a coach who can't even control his own body? Zero credibility.
Love watching your vids
I remember I saw on the news back then that he also went to KU to coach because his daughter was a student there at the time.
Winners. Kansas ranked in top five and Orange Bowl Champions. Mangino Offensive Coordinator for Oklahoma's perfect season in 2000. Kept Flor.St from repeat. Brent Venables and Mike Stoops Co-defensive coordinators shut out Bobby Bowden's top rated offense.
Biggest mistake Kansas made was firing this man… Kansas, went to the Orange bowl and one with this guy they have not been shit every since
He attracted a lot of good players, but that's just gravity.
Put some respect on his name. Mike Leach and Him helped Bob Stoops winning a natty in 2000
The AP Poll took college football fun away
Mangino was a hard nose old school coach
Naw bro how about the NIU football coach, he's a hunky chunk
2007 was the weirdest year ever so Kansas doing this isn't shocking
I think Athletic Directors feared he might keel over and die on the sidelines, just like umpire John McSherry did in baseball. Hard to sell parents and players on physical fitness when the guy looks like a sumo wrestler. They may not have said it to his face but I'm sure the ADs had this thought.
What I remember most about him was he had absolutely no sense of humor when it came to Gatorade showers.
Because the Gatorade would seep up into his rolls and be sticky for a week … true storie
He was a great coach and guy. The disrespect toward this man is unnerving.
They had the best team with Vince young I’ve seen beat in 2004 and one play saved Texas
Youngstown representing 330
Kansas actually had a good/great team in 1968, Losing to OU by 4 and the Orange bowl by 1. I think they ended up ranked about 6-7th.
Then they had very little success until Mangino. I think they had zero idea how to handle success, and all of a sudden the heads got big and they felt like they deserved to be a top tier team no matter what. If they’d kept Mangino no telling how long they’d have had success, and success at KU in football is not being a perineal top 10 team.
It’s less. You should expect less. They all of a sudden expected more and I think Mangino performed a miracle in raising the dead.
His reward was to be canned. So to speak.
I only read the thumbnail and was like no way he’s making the videos about the fattest head coaches in the league. Then I read the tittle 😂
That Orange Bowl season was more of an anomaly than anything. They didn’t play a single Big 12 team with a winning conference record. They were in the Big 12 North Division which was extremely weak with Nebraska and K-State both being terrible at that time. And their schedule played out so that they didn’t have to play Missouri until the last game of the season or any of the good teams in the Big 12 South. To say the Missouri game was close is kind of misleading. Missouri was rolling them. Late in the game when it was pretty much over they switched up their defense and started playing prevent. Kansas took advantage of it got a couple quick scores but Missouri was never in any danger of losing that game. It was obvious from start to finish that they were a much better team. They beat VT but those guys were highly overrated because they played in the ACC which was easily the weakest Power 5 football conference at the time by a long shot. Not saying he wasn’t a good coach but there was definitely a ton of luck involved in their brief encounter with success. However, I agree that they were stupid for firing him. I think some folks over there in Lawrence were delusional and had forgotten about their history as a program. I guess they thought they were somebody all of a sudden. Like they could just plug in another coach and pick up right where they left off. In reality we’re talking about a school that has been to I believe 11 bowl games in 123 years of playing football. Mangino just getting them to the point where they could consistently win six games even against bad competition was somewhat of a miracle. He accomplished a lot with what little he had and all of the obstacles he had to overcome to win football games at Kansas. They sure do look like clowns now. Two wins is as good as they’ve been able to get for years. Bet their fans would give anything just to have Mangino there going 6-6 and taking them to shitty bowl games. Lol.
Kansas and Missouri did play in 2007. They were both in the Big 12 North, thus they played EVERY year.
@@RRRoland1130 The very last game at the end of the season yes. I know they had to play every year. I should have said they hadn’t had to play them yet that season before they reached number two in the country.
His players quit on him. I would tell him if he dropped 300 pounds, I'd let him buy season tickets.
What’re you talking about he just coached in the super bowl the last 2 years in a row...
They fired him because Jayhawks are a bunch of snobs and they didn't like the image he was portraying... and they haven't been worth a damn since ... but on the other hand it was just 2 seasons and when they fired him his record was still 2 games under 500 and once teams figured out the newly gimmick offense Todd Reesings 3rd season wasn't worth a s**t either.. mostly due to having to play OU and Texas and several more losses
I think KSU has the coolest uniforms in college football. At least in that era before all the unis got weird. I was at MIzzou during this era and it made me hate KU even more.
Kansas got what they deserved after Mangino. Kansas has never been a good job, so if you have a good but flawed man/coach you try to keep him until he cant win anymore.
