mount a thin line on the top of the jib and down to a small block where you attatch the bottom of the jib.then take that line to the cockpit. When you need to take down your jib. just loosen the haylard and pull the line until the sail is down on the deck. Fasten the line and the jib will stay down. no need to walk on the deck. I do this on my 36' Skerrycruiser. Works fine 🙂
I recently sailed my Starwind 19 (a sistership to the P18) solo and essentially nonstop from Philadelphia to Newport Rhode Island (350 nm / 10 days). A buddy joined me for much of the sail back. It wasn't that hard since I had good weather for the times i needed to sleep but the boat did fine.
@@ColoradoSailing it was a great trip! I sailed up to see the Newport stopover for The Ocean Race. I took an old jib and wrote "When I grow up I want to be an IMOCA" for the 60 foot round the world racers. If you are ever interested in going long distances and looking for tips, feel free to ask. Best of luck with your P18.
Precision Boat Works ended all production of sailboats in August of 2018 after 40 years. The Porter brothers (Bill and Richard) who founded the company both retired. Richard died soon after, but Bill Porter still sells Precision parts on a part-time basis.
Bought it from www.shapeways.com. The specific link for the P18 ($69) is here: www.shapeways.com/product/B375YA92W/precision-18-3-75inch-dm375?optionId=127134012&li=marketplace For aluminum gates I’d contact Tom Luque at www.mastgates.com.
Thanks for the video. Yeah, the gate is ideal, but very pricey. I went with a simple $10 sail stop that I keep in place just about the gate opening, with all the slugs kept above it. That works for fine for hoisting or dropping the mail, and no problem putting sail cover on.

I'd say the mast track gate is must-have even with crew, what a pain without it!
I have only used boats with a track stop, usually a bolt. Best invention ever.
Are they out of business now (2024)?

Yes, where did you get the mast track gate or did you make it?
