  • In this short timelapse we condense the White Star Line ocean liner RMS Olympic's epic career into a 3 minute span, with her full array of paintschemes and configurations on display, proving she was so much more than just the sister of RMS Titanic.

    Truly a sad story hers is. The only ship of her own class to survive and see her sisters die.

      not only sadness i'd say, she was a glorious ship, she did everything a ship could do

      And then she was mercilessly scrapped just because it was the great depression and White Star Line needed money. While is might have been more moral to make her like the Queen Mary, it most certainly had to be scrapped because White Star Line was losing money and a floating hotel wouldn't be profitable compared to destroying her. Thank you great depression. She was the last chance anyone would have to be on an original Titanic look-alike (I dont count any modern replicas), and because of you, White Star and Cunard ran out of money and has to destroy her for scrap. On the bright side though, her interior, fittings, and supplies were sold of to museums and one hotel bought one of her rooms. Now the closest we'll ever be to dining on Titanic is White Swan Hotel, but the very thing I wanted the most was an original Grand Staircase to walk around on. I know there are a few replicas, but couldn't someone have bought the staircase as well?

      All of Olympic metal parts were later recycled to manufacture WWII war machines. In addition, after WWII, some of the surviving WWII war machines got scrapped again instead being preserved in WWII museums.

      It’s about the same today. Cruise ships are pretty old and inefficient by the time they’re 20.

      @@MarshallMathersBruceTheIII well Cunard White Star couldn't predict the future. They were low on money due to Great Depression and found it more profitable to destroy her than give her Queen Mary treatment (converting to a floating hotel). Though some interiors, fittings, and possibly objects onboarding were spared and auctioned off to Museums and a particular hotel's restaurant, the majority of the ship had to be demolished for scrap. Cunard never predicted that the Great Depression wouldn't last very long and soon, more tickets would sale and they'd get all their lost money back. Nobody could predict it either until the end of WWII. Sometimes the inability to predict the future has resulted in regrettable decisions that helped us temporarily in the present, but would be controversial in the future. Of course, God is the only real predictor and since we can't talk to him directly, we sometimes have to depend on instincts and human nature.

      @@jetsons101 she needs a LOT of TLC. The cost of repairing her is worth more than the cost of the ship itself, and there’s no funding for this ship, and not nearly enough donations.

    My favorite ocean liner. A beautiful ship inside and out with a fantastic life story. She did so much in just 24 years. If only we could have seen the three sisters all together. She earned her nickname the Old Reliable and truly was the real unsinkable ship.

    Ok, this was epic. I really felt like this was one of those rockstars ageing over the years, because it almost was, except up until the end, Olympic never aged too much. Olympic had an arguably much more interesting career than her sisters and did us proud. If only they had tried to preserve her, I can't imagine what it would look like. As a fellow New South Welshman, it would be cool to see a timeline of the Bingara Type vessels, which plied the Manly to Circular Quay run between 1906 and 1985. Brilliant video once again.

      You cant say Olympic had a more interesting career because Titanic and Britannic never really got a chance. Theres no telling what events were prevented by their sinking. Could you imagine TWO more ‘olympics’ sailing around in WW1? That would be epic!

    This makes me super sad. Titanic was iconic due to her tragic maiden voyage, and the fascination has endured for 110 years now. The Olympic was favored for obvious reasons. What a massive loss she wasn’t preserved. In this day and age I’d have been grateful to walk on the Olympic and see what was with that ship, and what could have been for the Titanic and Britannic. I would have loved to have seen the wood work and the lounges first hand.

      If you're in the UK, go to the White Swan hotel in Alnwick, they have the "Olympic dining room" which has the wood panelling and windows salvaged from the Olympic's first class dining room.

    Very well done!
    It's such a shame that she was the only one of her class to sail after world war 1. Titanic was lost due to an iceberg collision, and Britannic was lost after hitting a mine. While the Queen of the Atlantic may be gone, in our hearts and heaven, she still steams for her destination.

      @@cupboi1337 no, it was a mine. A torpedo is unlikely because sinking a Hospital Ship (like the Britannic) of any nationality, was not allowed in the war.

    Great detail Michael, your artistic skill shines. The Olympic has a long life before being broken for scrap. The last of the four funnel ocean liners to be sent to the breakers yard was, my favorite ocean liner, RMS Aquitania. She sailed from 1914 to 1950. Michael you sure have a great gift.     My Great-Grandfather sailed on SS Olympic (not sure if that’s the same ship as RMS Olympic) as a troop ship during WWI in May 1916. He sailed from Halifax to Liverpool. I saw it on his military service record and thought it was pretty cool.

      I think it probably was the same Olympic.
      Olympic (and other British transatlantic liners that carried mail) could be designated as both “S.S.” and “R.M.S.”, technically.
      Royal Mail contracts can come and go, but a steamship (with the exception of QE2) will always be a steamship :)

    Not that it has anything to do with Olympic…. But like 10 years ago I went to this Titanic museum in Florida. And they had a giant section of the hull on display that I was just mesmerized by. I ended up moving my hand down a small piece of it for a quick moment….. so when I could go back to school I could brag to all my friends that I had touched a part of the titanic. I was like nine and just completely infatuated with anything Titanic. If you ever have the chance to go to either of the gigantic titanic museums in either Branson Missouri or Pigeon Forge Tennessee, I would highly recommend it. The replica of the grand staircase alone is enough to make your jaw fall off.

    Amazing story she lived. But the sad part is how no one today can ever physically step back to see 1890-1935 in ship design. One of the most incredibly lavish periods of utilitarian design and now we have so little remainder of this.

    It's always been interesting that with all the extensive post-Titanic upgrades made during the 1913 overhaul, that Olympic never got the forward promenade screens installed as was the case on both Titanic and Britannic.

      I believe it was so the passengers could still walk the length of the ship without obstructed views that the extra lifeboats created on the boat deck.

      Because she didn't needed. Olympic had a long enclosed promenade on B deck. The reason Titanic and Britannic had those windows is because of their lack of a B deck promenade (On Britannic's case she had a half promenade forward).

After the 1913 refit, a good chunk of that was taken up by the extension of the Ala Carte restaurant and the addition of the Cafe Parisian, and by 1929, the Olympic's forward remaining B deck promenade was taken up by cabins, but still no forward A deck screens added.
      Also, Britannic's forward B deck (as designed in 1914) had an open area and yet the A deck screens were added.

    As i sat having lunch in a hotel in the peak district uk , i noticed a small sign, i got up went over to look at the sign, it simply read the wood paneling is from the RMS Olympic this was history that you could see and touch, amazing.
    In Bristol UK, there was the first class dining room from the Mauritania now that was a very good experience and place to eat, no idea if its still up and running. Thank you for the video the detail is very good, by all accounts we lost a family member on the Titanic second class a young girl , so its always interesting to see and read items.

    Excellent video. I prefer her the most after her first refit until the war, and then again from late June 1920 to about 1921/22, when they lowered the sheer line. Her second dazzle paint scheme has grown on me a lot though.

    Had no idea about that lighter gray paint scheme! Nice overview of her different guises throughout her life. (also I just watched ANtR last night on my brand-new DVD; first time I saw it in its entirety and it was wonderful :D )

    I always wondered why the Olympic's yellow line was lowered below the nameplate in the 20s. Was this part of making the ship look more modern (like painting the Grand Staircase green)?

      I thought all White Star ships had that done in the 20's? I've seen pictures of Majestic, Homeric, Georgic, and the third Britannic with it.

      From what I've heard, having the stripe lower was the standard design of previous White Star liners, and eventually the same was done for Olympic.

    Hi Mike, I was watching the RMS Olympic video from H & G, and was asking myself why she was painted white. Your Olympic video answered my question. It was to make her look more impressive during her launch. She looked pretty good like that. I know black covers rusty streaks, and coal dust better than white does. though.

    I’ve never understood why the moved the gold band around her hull down a deck later in her career. It looks much better demarcating her hull and superstructure.

      My thought exactly. It looks oddly out of place where they later put it. And then there's what they did to the wood paneling in the first class stairway. I'm not sure the people in charge of painting her were entirely right in the head.

    I heard Olympic was painted a Gray color when she was launching, to help her "stand out" in the black and white photographs of the 1910s. What kind of "Gray" was she painted? But if you don't have an answer 9r don't know, I'll understand. Please and Thank you.

    Hold on, is that the triple screw warning sign above her propellers in the scrapped illustration?? They bothered to put that there?

      That's what it looks like. Maybe it was a legal requirement? By the time the hull was cut that far down, the propellers were about 1/3 of the way out of the water.

    When did ocean liners stop having funnel stays?
    I might be mistaken, but I think the last major transatlantic liners to have funnel stays might have been Ile de France in her original configuration and Queen Mary. I can't be sure the cables I see in old photos are actually stays.
    Rex, Conti di Savoia, Bremen, and Europa, and Normandie all seem to have had funnels that were fatter in proportion to their height and without stays.

    The Olympic’s carved oak paneling has been gracing the Swan Hotel in the UK for 70 years.

    There appears to have been some minor changes to Olympic pre Titanic disaster and pre 1913 refit which were never officially recorded or either don't get mentioned. Photos taken by Robert Welch when Olympic was brought into the Thompson Graving Dock on the 2nd March 1912 show the fitting (not sure exactly was it was but possibly a vent) on the top of the wheelhouse towards the starboard side which was there from launch and which can be seen in the maiden voyage photos (its the white fitting which looks like a drooping leaf, for one of a better description). However, a few days later on the 7th March, photos taken by John Kempster (Bell and Kempster) while being manuveroured around (one photo shows the stern of Titanic on the left) shows that this vent has been replaced with a taller swan necked type vent similar to the one fitted to Titanic in the same place. Why was it changed at a time when Olympic was in dock for repairs to her propeller shaft?. Robert Welch also took photos in the dry dock showing the two propeller blades badly damaged.

    You should make 3 versions of a video of titanic over the years if she never sunk
    1: has titanic getting scrapped
    2: has titanic meeting the same fate as the Lusitania
    3:has titanic become a lucky ship and become a hotel ship like the queen Mary

      Or you can look at it this way, if the "Titanic" disaster never occurred by the 1930's she'd have been just another 20 year old ocean liner, rapidly becoming old-fashioned and surplus to Cunard-White Star's needs, and just as likely meeting the same end as "Olympic."
      A hotel ship? People didn't think that way in those days.
      Here's the thing, I think "Titanic" would have survived the torpedo damage that sunk "Lusitania." She was a bigger ship with better watertight door protection to localize damage, and with a different coal bunker configuration that would have mitigated coal dust explosions.

    There should be a movie about the ships that were around the Titanic when it was sinking including the Olympic. The Olympic was one of the ships that picked up the Titanic’s distress call and tried to dash to its rescue, but since it was about 505 miles away, it was unable to get there in time. It had just made it about 110 miles from the location when it was turned down by the Carpathia, since it had picked up all of the survivors. The Olympic’s crew still offered to carry the Titanic’s survivors, but the Carpathia’s crew declined because they were afraid that a ship looking near-identical to the Titanic would give the survivors great anxiety.

      A lot of people sailed on the "Olympic" just for that reason since the ships were basically twins.

    NGL the Olympic should not have been scrapped and should have been turned into a museum ship due to her two sisters sinking.

      Agreed. There’s so much fascination about the Titanic even to this day, I think they made a huge mistake demolishing the Olympic.

      I think there were plans to make her a floating hotel (kind of like Queen Mary), but the people who wanted to do it couldn't pull the money together.

    There's a photo I have come across of Olympic said to have been taken during her 1913 refit, it shows the first forward funnel missing with the other three still in place and the floating crane is seen behind Olympic, and no extra lifeboats added. The B deck windows appear to have been extended further back, though the photo isn't very clear. Why were the funnels removed or one of them?. I'm guessing the bridge wing was extended during the 1913 refit, as another photo I have seen shows the wing extended but there are no extra lifeboats installed, and B deck hasn't been extended further back at this point. Photos on the Paul Lee Titanic site seem to suggest that additional lifeboats were installed very soon after the Titanic disaster, which was in May 1912.

    Have you heard of the AHS Centaur? A hospital ship that was torpedoed 100km off of the coast of Queensland, and almost the entire crew perished. You should definitely do a drawing of it!

    That last picture of her being scrapped was sad, such a beautiful ship, the last Olympic Class, but i suppose times were changing, to expensive to upgrade Olympics engines from Coal to i think it was oil as she was getting old and less fit for the job, bigger ships were needed. if only she was saved, imagine having that as a museum, not a mock up or small scale model, but Olympic herself.

      "Olympic" was upgraded to oil firing not long after the First World War, and at the end her engines were still in very good condition. However as I stated in an earlier post her interior appointments were considered too old-fashioned by the 1930's, the economic depression was ongoing, and the immigrant trade that really made money for the shipping companies had diminished greatly, so the ship was considered surplus to the Cunard-White Star line's needs. Hence, no rebuild.

    I always wanted to know when the Olympic started to have that golden band on the hull below the name Olympic and I never knew exactly when and thanks to your video now I finally know that it was in 1925, for me the golden line just below the name Olympic gave it a charm much greater to it, a refinement, I can't explain it, just that I prefer it more than when the gold line was above the hull of 1911-1913, 1919-1924. Thank you very much, you answered a question that has been around for a few years of my life, I always wanted to know from when and there were never any topics or forums about it. SPECTACULAR your video, thank you very much once again. Just a question; Is there a specific reason or was it just updating the aesthetics of the line?

      It was in order for her to match the other liners of the fleet. The change wasn’t mande in 1925 it was in 1922.

    Question: ive seen some sources state that Olympic got the compass platform ontop of the bridge during the 1913 refit. Yet your drawing does not show this feauture untill 1916. Is there a reason for that?

    After seeing this cool looking timelapse, I wonder why Olympic never get an Enclosed "A" deck promenade or the gantry Davits like the Britannic. It seems she had several retrofits.

      Because she didn't needed, B deck was already enclosed. Titanic didn't had a B deck promenade so because of that A deck was half enclosed.
      And the gantry davits were too heavy. Britannic had several extra strutural supports to hold them, whereas Olympic didn't. But you can see she was completely overhauled in terms of lifeboats after the war. Instead of over 60 boats, she received larger boats, and needed only about 48 of them, and even less inthe 1930s. The davits were also modified from her pre-war period.

      @@jeanscuissiato135 They enlcosed half of the A-deck promenade with windows, because on the Olympic that section became wet during rough seas or weather. So a problem on Olympic was solved on the Titanic, my question is why they didn't do that on the Olympic during retrofit? And don't forget the Brittanic did also have enclosed A-deck promenade.
      True Titanic did have less promenade than Olympic.
      Olympic was reinforced with a double hull, so extra supports for the gantry davits could have been easily applied.

      @@Sobek79 It wasn't enclosed because of sea spray, that is a myth. Olympic had a long enclosed promenade on B deck so it doesn't make sense for passengers to complain for something they could have on the deck below. Titanic lost all of her B deck promenade, so she was in need of an enclosed promenade, and A deck was enclosed. Olympic, during all of her carrer, had a long promenade on B deck even with cabins being added forward in 1929, and aft both the extension of the restaurant and cafe parisian in 1913. With all that, she didn't needed to have it enclosed.
      And the reinforcements of double hull had nothing to do with the boat deck. A deck needed to be reinforced, in case of Britannic, for the gantry davits to be put in. That was done from pretty much the beggining of her design,

      @@jeanscuissiato135 okay, you got that from Mark Chirnside: Titanic's A-deckPromenade Enclosure. It also mentions that they discussed a proposal to enclose the forward end of A-deck, after the extention of the cabins on B-deck during an improvment of the Olympic in 1928/29. During this refit a large portion of the enclosed promenade was lost after all, but they didn't do that because of the costs.
      So enclosed promenades have to do with the weather 🙂 only it was not fitted after several complains of passengers.

    It’s amazing to me that the ship was used during wartime. What happened to the beautiful staterooms? Just occupied by military? And, after all that craftsmanship it was only in service for 24 years?

      Most Liners are also Auxillery Naval ships to be used as troop carriers and/or hospital ships during wartime. The interiors would be stripped out and stored until the end of hostilities when the ships would be released back to their owners and refitted. 20-30 years was the normal lifetime of a Liner, after that they became to costly to run or convert.

      Yeah, it was a change that all WSL ships had. You can even see it in pictures of their later liners like Britannic III and Georgic. I personally don't care much for it myself.

      @@ChairmanKam To my knowledge, the government-influenced Cunard White Star merger didn’t necessarily *require* the scrapping of either ship, just the fact that WSL came out short with their remaining ships was enough for Olympic to get scrapped.
      All of which was hastened by the fact that it was the Great Depression, as well.

    I don't think the lowering of the yellow stripe/line on Olympic's hull below B deck was made in around 1925. Footage of Olympic at Southampton in 1928 does not show the yellow stripe lower than what it was originally, the line appears to be directly below where the black hull meets the white painted half of the upper superstructure. The lowering of the line seems to have been changed in the 1930s when the ships name was enlarged on the bow. No photos I have seen from the 1920s show any lowered yellow line, so I don't know where this information comes from. And how did they enlarge Olympic's name when the letters were supposed to have been incised into the steel?.

      It was definitely lowered quite early in the 20s in around 21/22 when White Star acquired and introduced Majestic :) I’m not sure if the photos or footage you’ve seen are labelled with the correct date but I have many shots from pre-1925 when the line was lowered. With the name; they simply painted it larger! Close-up photos faintly show the original outlines painted over :)
