- Here is a short video briefly discussing the most common breeds used for service work! I am not a professional nor do I claim to be, this is just info I have picked up from talking to others and through my own research and experience.

what do you mean my emotionally trained vacuum can't be my service dog breed? to pick up all the crap i leave in my wake? aHH
Service Angel Percie your comments always keep me GOIN
😂😂😂 Love you Claire and Percie.
Lol
Service Angel Percie I love your videos
Service Angel Percie omg you and emily are my favorite service dog youtubers
Border collie if you make the training a game, they learn easier and isn't as stubborn. I used to raise border collies for trick frisbee shows growing up with my aunt and they needed to have almost sd level control in public and I found that as long as they think it's a game they will do it. There's a trainer for sd's that also makes the training sessions into games to help stubborn breeds learn/trained to be sd's. She's retired now though. Also temperament plays a big role in if training will be easier or not.
Great info, thank you so much! That sounds like a solid training plan.
My SDiT is a pit bull, chihuahua, GSD mix and he is doing really well. Who would have ever thunk!
I always find it hilarious when chihuahua shows up in a dog with only large breeds lmao I bet hes beautiful though
My pit mix Ruby is learning to be my service dog. She will already stand at my side anytime I need help getting up. She will also give me anything I point at. Only reason I have not officially call her my service is because she still learning to be more calm.
Coming from someone who has a shep... prey drive, YES. High energy, YES. But can be redirected *most* of the time. With the feeding off of emotion, I can see it. With Sofie, she definitely feels my anxiety. But she associates my anxiety with tasking. Which is something she LooOVvvVeEs to do. But she is also a VERY confident dog. I do believe every dog is different, and when picking a prospect known as risky in a certain criteria, caution should be taken in picking a dog from a reputable breeder who specializes in stable minded, confident dogs from good working lines that suit ones needs. No offense taken here 🤗 just sharing my personal experience with my girl 💞 your vid was great 😍😍
Yes! I think shepherds are amazing but I know I could not personally train one in the way they need to be trained haha. Thank you so much for your kind words :)
Just got a chocolate lab to train as a psychiatric service dog. Sounds like I made the perfect choice!
Esperanza Martinez hows it going?
I have a German shepherd black lab when I was screaming and crying in pain and having a panic attack because of the pain. He fell asleep he's not a SD but damn he a lil heartless😂 (he's too old to be my service dog im getting a Goldendoodle puppy in a couple weeks that will be my Part-time owner trained SD)
Really cool video! I think one of the most important things is to feel a 100% comfortable with a breed.
I really struggled with choosing a breed. However I knew a golden, lab, doodle, etc would be a good first service dog, I couldn’t really fall in love with any of those specific dogs.
But I completely fell in love with the german shepherd. It was a great risk I took, but it turned out this breed fits me the best of all, and I just can’t imagine me walking with another dog anymore. :-)
But, I still would recommend everyone to really do the best research you can do for a breed. But also make sure you feel a connection with the dog/breed. :-)
SarahDraws I agree! If you don’t connect with the breed, it’s not going to work out. These breeds usually have the best outcomes but other breeds can succeed as well!
SarahDraws I completely agree with you.
Border Collies also make amazing seizure alert dogs. ❤
Totally agree on your statement about Border Collies, except that they're stubborn... I think it's just that they're so intelligent and sensitive this actually makes them difficult to train. They analyze eeevery little movement their human makes and can pick up on bad things just as fast as good ones! Definitely would not recommend them for most people unless they're professional trainers themselves or have lots of experience with this breed specifically. 👍🏻
Thank you for this!! They're incredibly smart. They make amazing service dogs when trained right!
How are you supposed to get experience if only experienced people with the breed should have them? You have to start somewhere...
Nat and Hay Yes of course; I usually tell people choosing a Border Collie right off the bat is similar to picking a Ferrari or a Lamborghini for their first car... if a handler or trainer has experience with similar (many times less-driven) breeds like Australian Shepherds, Cattle Dogs, etc. I would have no problem recommending a Border to them as long as they're prepared for the extra work... for someone without herding breed experience specifically however, I'd usually be a bit more careful. It takes an incredible amount of dedication to keep a proper Border Collie let alone to train one for service work, just as it would for other high drive breeds like Malinois and Dutchies whose brains literally neverrrr take a rest (lol). They don't typically make good pets and require tons of work and engagement throughout the day to keep their minds busy. Of course there are several "levels" of drive within the Border Collie as a breed, I myself tend to go for the high-end herding and trial dog rather than the lesser-driven show line. Showline BCs I would say are much more like Aussies and more manageable for the majority of handlers, though they always lack the same drive that makes the working lines so incredible in sports and other activities. Before considering a Border, any handler should ask themselves if they can handle a true high-drive dog and whether they have the training skills to deal with potential problems down the road (Borders are notorious for being prone to reactivity which can take months to resolve and of course would result in a SD prospect being washed). Hence why I mentioned the sensitivity as being such an important aspect to consider! (:
I have a Rack Russell, these guys are very energetic and need to be out and about all the time, making them not so patience, so they probably aren’t best for being a service dog. Buttttt.... I also have a Bernese mountain dog (which I looove) and he is my service dog. See these dogs are good for Mobility, which means they help people get around. If they need help walking or getting up and sitting down, or even getting there wheel chair pulled!
My SD is for my anxiety, and for finding me when I run away. I tend to run away and hide when I get stressed, she also helps me get up when There is no one else to help me up (my mom) cause my stomach and back starts to hurt when I freak out so my SD does DTP and helps me up! She is a real life saver! ☺️
Kalora4life well jack Russ here! Future service dog!
My sdit is a Jack Russell!
My dog is in the Shepard breed, he's a Belgian Mellon Oau, he's got the smart knot on the top of his skull, I've had him for 3 months and he knows several commands and he is big like a German Shepard but he has short hair, he came to me, God, source, the universe, whatever one may chose to call their higher power and I am so grateful 🙏 that he is in my life, I am so blessed 🙌 😉 love and light to all, Namaste
Truth seeker-I’m curious about your dog;s breed, the Belgian Mellon oau. What tasks does he do? I’m needing a service dog that can brace firmly and help support a 226 lb., 73 yr old female, with neurological problems, after falling.to stay stable enough so she can position herself upright. I also have 2 small dogs, cavalier King Charles spaniels, 17 lb each, very laid back. How does your dog get along with small dogs or is he ‘prey driven’ by them?? I know i need a smart, large breed dog to support myself and am wondering about shedding since i have so many allergies.. we do groom our dogs, but i was so pleased to hear of a short haired BELGIAN MELLON OAU, is that typical of their breed? I will be looking this up. Are they only breed in Germany? We are military retired, so i qualify for some programs. Any help you can give me will be most appreciated. I live in South Carolina. Peggy Ferro
Still, PEGGY FERRO here. I assume your dog needs tons of exercise, is that true.?? My husband walks our dogs at least 3x/day with one trip to a park or play area. Would this be enough exercise for your dog?
@@peggyferro237 : my bff is a Belgian Mellon Oau which is in the Shepard family, on you tube his breed is the one most used by police and emergency rescue because of their intelligence, also when I'm feeling down he seems to adapt my emotions, so I try not to get upset around him. He is such a best friend to me that I'd be lost w/o my Buster Brown, he is house trained, he has his shots and my niece even mentioned that I take better care of him than myself lol, if you're looking for an emotional support dog, I'd highly recommend his breed to you with no qualms whatsoever, he's a pain sometimes but I wouldn't trade him for all of the gold in the world. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions or concerns or comments, good luck in your quest. Yes he is short haired (which helps with shedding) also he is a very strong dog, he is loyal to his one master, but he will quickly know who his master is, I believe that you will be delighted to own such a beautiful loving and caring animal, and yes you can find the breed here in America, my Buster came to me, I believe that God sent him to me. It was approx. Two maybe 3 weeks of house training before he knew to do his business outside. I am so blessed. My sister has 2 little shitzu's that still aren't house trained and she got her dogs about a year before I was blessed to have Buster in my life. I had him neutered at about 6 or 7 months and he is getting bigger, he loves to run and play. I have a question for you? What would you recommend for fleas? Because the local vet charges an exorbitant amount of money and there ought to be something that is chemical free, I worry about his health, so any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you sincerely Byron Sledge
@@peggyferro237 Malinois are normally on the smaller side coming in at about 40-70 pounds depending on the lines. They are crazy energetic and have a lot of power behind them. They are nicknamed maligators and I wouldn't recommend them for first time owners. They are very loyal to their owners but require a lot of training, structure and consistency
I have a borador. Border collie and black lab mix. She is a very smart dog. Within the past week she has learned sit, stay, down, come, paw, high five and focus. She will soon start her training as a service dog once she's potty trained well and heals on the leash. Im sure she will pick up on it once i use treats. I'm also taking her to pet friendly places such as rural king or a tractor supply. She does well with other dogs. Smaller dogs are hard for her, not because she's aggressive. She just doesn't know her size and their size and treats the smaller dog as a bigger dog but like I said she is learning.
There is an amazing organisation near where I live and they do PAT’S for your own service dog in training for psychiatric service dogs (ex. Anxiety, depression, bipolar) and the dogs that have been trained for these are all completely different dogs, most of them being rescues, they have service dogs that are bulldogs, greyhounds, dachshunds, corgis, beagles and the list goes on and on and on! (I don’t really know if that made any sense but they like do the public access tests if you have trained your own psychiatric service dog 🐕🦺 and they]re are so many different breeds that have been able to be just as good as some of the more common breeds)
My first SD and current SD is a border collie both professionally trained and trained by myself. I do have to agree with the “feeding off of energy” because my dog does it BUT we are a pretty good team. I do have to disagree on the training tho cause he was super easy to train and grasped everything very easily with no hesitation maybe I lucked out lol
I’m getting my poodle service dog prospect on Saturday. So excited!
Got any advice? I’m looking into Poodles for my PTSD and everything I find is washed down to “They’re smart, no down sides at all”.
@@teetertotterseesaw5867 Hey! So poodles are the second most intelligent dog, coming right in after border collies. They're easy to train but may have a tendency to be stubborn because of their human-like intelligence. They can be more expensive than other breeds because you have to groom them every 6-8 weeks. You can get them professionally groomed or do it yourself. It'll look ugly at first but just keep on clipping. They're hypoallergenic and are great for allergies.
Basically-
Pros: extremely intelligent, no shedding, standards are good for mobility, good for a lot of things (psychiatric tasks, mobility, medical alerts), hypoallergenic
Cons: grooming can be expensive, can be stubborn, extremely intelligent to the point of being scary, HAVE to be brushed daily (if not more) to avoid matting
When looking into breeds I tend to get info on Border Collies, but are Rough coated collie somewhat know for psychiatric service work? I've seen them as mobility service dogs but not really as anything else. Like I can't find if they reflect their handler's emotions, in the same way, the German shepherd is known to do.
My mom suggested the breed based on her life with 2 of them being gentle, good at picking up on training and they bond very well to their people. There is also a breeder kinda near us who claims to have had many dogs go into therapy work in their breed lines as well as calmer dogs have been matched with elderly people looking for companionship. I question all claims made by breeders...I might just be over thinking it or something.
This is SUPER helpful! I was literally just thinking about the best breeds and now I know!
I am glad I was able to help!
I'm have a German shepherd and they were fine for me, but I understand if some people can't handle them, it took 2 months to train my behavior wise, they were just fine.
I have a cocker spaniel as my service dog and they are relatively hard to train but I got lucky with mine.I do not recommend getting a cocker spaniel as a service dog. She does do light mobility but rarely. She is mainly a psychiatric dog. If I knew 3 years ago that I was going to get a service dog I would have definitely gotten a lab or Rottweiler. This helped me a lot for the future
This is great information! Thank you for sharing your experience.
Great video. American Johnson bulldog show line. The breeder has had 7 out of 8 litters has been successfully trained to be sd's both phys and psych by the organization here. Each litter had between 6 and 8 puppies. They also train with high success rate american pitbull terriers and other terrier breeds for vets, blind, and deaf. I'm on a 15yr wait list since they are specific disability trained sd to mitigate their handler's disability. The breeder says when the next batch of puppies are born I can have one to start training and the organization said they'd help. If you have the dog/pup they will help you or if you qualify but don't have a dog they put you on the list. Hopefully I'll have my sdit by November. No I'm not a vet but I talked with them and explained my disabilities and they accepted me into the program at this time.
This is great information! I wish you luck on your journey!!
I'm owner training a pitbull named Kara and she's actually doing super well!! I know it will definitely get harder since I'm just starting out, but she learns fast and I can get her to follow commands with my other dogs still around on the second day of training, so I'm happy to see where this goes!
I recently got my golden labrador, she is doing really well so far! :)
I have a German shepherd black lab when I was screaming and crying in pain and having a panic attack because of the pain. He fell asleep he's not a SD but damn he a lil heartless😂 (he's too old to be my service dog im getting a Goldendoodle puppy in a couple weeks that will be my Part-time owner trained SD )
Hey love the video but shepherds do make good psychiatric service dogs just like any other breed it depends on the dog! They don’t feed off of people’s emotions anymore than other dogs Ik that has been something circling around but it’s honestly not true and trainers that work with shepherds of all types back that up it’s a common myth out there yes there energy is very high but it does not make them feed off the handlers emotions more than others:)
Couple_of_mals They can make good PSDs when you know what you’re getting into! I got my information from shepherd owners and trainers.
Wesley the Service Doodle oh okay well I guess everyone has different experiences with different dogs! There’s always conflict when talking about breeds 😂
Yes they is, I wasn’t saying shepherds aren’t good dogs! They make amazing service dogs :)
Couple_of_mals I agree buddy.
I don’t believe in breed stereotypes.
It’s all about the dog as an individual and the person training it.
I have a Shepherd for psych work and honestly, he does feed off my emotions :/
I have a chihuahua service dog he is great at his job
I have a Gsd that does a mix of pysch work and medical alert. She's on the smaller side and a lot calmer but it depends on their lines as well. There are five different lines of shepherds which help determine color and energy levels. You have: American Show, DDR, West German Show, West German working and then there is the Czech line. My girl is a mix of American and Czech lines so she is on the smaller side and lighter in coloring. She willing to work and loves doing it but on days when my lupus is acting up can chill on the couch with me. Shepherd's aren't usually recommended for pysch work because a lot of the fear and anxiety that goes down the leash can put them on guard. Kilo will be turning 2 in April we just started pysch work with her. Everything before was P.A, basics, retrievals, picking items up, I believe she alerts or knows when I m going to have a flare she's gets extra velcro dog right beforehand, Dpt and blocking. New tasks will be interupting behaviors, waking from nightmares, Gib lout, and medicine reminders. She is very much my best friend and to me this will probably be the only breed I own as a large dog.
It’s video was super helpful.....I rescued a rough collie a few weeks ago and I can’t wait to get her trained for service work!!
I love my airedale terrier as my service dog. He's in training but is catching in fast and doing so well. Great vid!
Thank you! Good luck with your training
My SD is an Australian Labradoodle (Labrador + Poodle + Spaniel) Because my old Golden Retriever SDiT had a few medical difficulties. She is super easy to train and is a quick learner but she can get a bit too excited when people come over. She is a really good Service Dog though
German Shepherd is my first service dog and he works for me for my PTSD and epilepsy
Everyone has their own preferences. I LOVE Golden Retrievers. My Rebel boy is soooooooooo easy to train! He just loves to work! Thank you for the video Emily!!!!
Sandra Opines Exactly! Every person has their “best” breed. I’m glad Rebel is so good! Thank you for watching :)
I have a lab named Rebel, such a cute name
I need a hypoallergenic dog for my PTSD but I’ve heard Poodles are not great for first timers. I have experience with Golden Retrivers as housepets (which I know is not the same) and I know that with how much they shed I would be taking allergy meds every day. That is an option but not great for my liver. I’m now contemplating a Goldendoodle. Would you say yours sheds a lot? Are there things I should consider given that I’m looking into Goldendoodles for PTSD and need minimal dander and shedding. (I’ve tried to find things but it's all washed out to “Get a pure breed” and “There are no downsides at all! Being a handler is easy peasy!”)
I have a chi as a service dog and she is doing great so far❤
I got a border collie who failed her training and is going to become just a pet, what do you think about dashund for psychiatric work?
Legally in the US by ada laws, any breed can be a service dog. Idk if it's different in any other country or anything
Avras Beautiful Creations Yes any breed is legal! I just talked about the most popular ones for service work :)
My SDIT is a GS/Belgian MAL mix
yessss labs shed a lot of people think they dont but they get hair everywhere!!!❤️❤️❤️
German Shepherds and Golden Retriever are my top picks right now but mine is also for type 1 diabetes and I think those would be good.
I've seen people have huskies as service dogs, is this a good idea?
They can be really stubborn for training. But I've seen several people have great husky SD's
Adrienne Sophie a service dog can be any breed but huskies tend to be more on the stubborn side so usually they aren’t recommend.😊
We have the same name and it's spelled the same way lol
I have a Siberian Husky Service dog. Are they good at service work? Maybe. It depends on what you need. I needed a smaller large dog that can pull me up inclines, help me on steps, pick things that I drop, help guide me during migraine (my eyes are shut it’s full guiding), already to my allergies, and alert to migraines as a bonus, just to name a few. Not only that but be able to independently make decisions to aid me if I’m down.
It’s a lot for one dog. I know.
I flunked 2 German Shepherds, a golden mix, a doodle, a lab mix, a border collie mix, a Dalmatian cross, and a few others mixes before I gave up rescuing and looked into Breeders. I settled on the husky because of the strong working drive and super sniffer. I looked at 5 different litters and once the puppy’s were almost 6 weeks old I came up with an aptitude test and had the breeders video chat me so that I could see the puppies react. I narrowed it down to 2 litters and did a similar test at 6 weeks to pick the right pup. After all that only one puppy passed out of 15 from two litters and that’s who I have right now. Finding the right temperament and ability is difficult because huskies in general are stubborn. But they are extremely intelligent! Without even being told Livius unlocked my front door and let the paramedics in without me actually teaching him that When he was eight months old. It’s hard work to train a husky. Especially teaching them to retrieve and come when called off leash. It’s more or less against their nature.
No because they have high drive and energy i asked my fb friend allyssa simone figuroa and thats what she told me and she used to work with 2 rescue organization s so she has seen it all
My service dog is a husky.
Do retrievers shed a lot? Im thinking of getting one for my new prospect.
Would a basset Shepard be a good choice for a seizure alert dog?
I understand what you mean about German Shepherds not being great for psychiatric work, however my last service dog was a german shepherd great pyrenees mix and he was so awesome with responding to my anxiety and PTSD. My current prospect is from the same mother and father just one litter later and she has already shown amazing potential. She isn't reactive as my last sd was so I'm hoping she will do better.
I have a yellow lab PSD named Dex and I totally agree with what u said about labs. 2/5 of Dex’s siblings had to be washed because they were too sensitive/in tune to their owners emotions. Dex is great tho☺️
I'm glad your SD is working out great! It all depends on the dog!
I haven't gotten a service dog as I don't think my anxiety/PTSD is that bad, but I would I would get a lab as my family have had one of those in the past and I'm very well educated when it comes to those breeds of dogs
I have a bull mastiff Shepard mix. And she’s very smart. She’s doing psychiatric work.
Hey. Im getting a puppy in February for a psychiatric service dog, do you think a shih poo is a good option for that?
Chesapeake bay retrievers are also really good too!
I know this video is old, and know you most likely won't see this, but I was wondering what you would think about an Australian Shepherd being a service dog? I've looked into it a bit and I'm not 100% sure if they would be good or not. They seem good, but I haven't found any articles or posts about peoples experiences with them as their service dog. Just wondering if you know of anyone who has had any experience with an Australian Shepherd and how it went?
My SD is an border collie husky mix
Could a Silken Windhound be a good service dog
Thank you so much for sharing
What breed would you reccomend for multiple service dog tasks because I need a service dog for PTSD and mobility?
Danielle Johnson I would say a lab, amazing loyalty and personality that love to please, in addition they are a good size for mobility. Good luck with getting you dog !!
If anyone could help with my journey to getting a service dog gofundme.com/service-dog-for-asthma-and-allergies
Labernese= lab and Bernese mountain dog.they would be great but VERY hard to get without finding a specialty program but GREAT sds.
My chihuahua dachshund mix has been my sdit for 4 months and she's doing amazing, but our hardest thing so far is she's become a little dog reactive after another dog tried to attack her
Oh gosh, I'm so sorry! Dog attacks are something every handler fears
Is a standard a good dog to look at for stabilization also?
Wait when you go throw a program u get to pick what type of dog u want
My mom wants a Newfoundland dog. We are getting a puppy prospect for my ptsd and some mobility issues i have. Would a Newfoundland be good as a multipurpose service dog?? We live in New England so we need a dog that can handle the cold.
I don’t have a dog yet but am wondering what breed I should go with especially psychiatric wise especially since with my anxieties they get really bad to the point I hyperventilate and collapse
I have an assistance dog that's a German Shepherd cross Belgian mal he's mobility assistance and psychiatric alert and one of the ways he alerts to get me out of the situation to to play up so I leave even if I don't realise that he's alerting I know he's playing up and leave and he calms right down and tasks
Do you have any experience with Swiss White Shepherds as psychiatric service dogs? Or anyone else perhaps? As they tend to be quite a bit different from german shepherds temperament wise. Thank you so much by the way for the informational video, it was just what I was looking for!❤️ You and Wesley are amazing!
I saw someone comment on a different video of hers saying they had success with a sws!
I’m training my cockapoo to be my service dog cuz I have epilepsy and autism and extreme anxiety
Good luck in your training!!
Wesley the Service Doodle she is a bit mental at the moment she needs to calm down a bit we got a show cocker cross cuz show cockers are calmer than working cockers she is amazing at training tho
I feel so weird in stores because my dog is a Puggle
I have a puppy American bully and I'm thinking of training her as an ESA (with taskish training) so idk, she does seem excited to learn but I don't know
What about a Eurasia dog breed
I’m thinking of training a boxer mutt because she loves training and working with me and she loves being around me.she is very high strung though.but what do y’all think about boxer because no one really talks about them for sd work so idk if it’s a great choice.but it’s what’s available and I see it working out in the future with her!
Do Italian greyhounds make good service dogs? They’re quite alert and treat motivated. Although, they are known to be nervous mine isn’t, only so far around other dogs. I taught her yesterday how to calm me down during a panic attack (she’s not registered or anything now but I’m highly considering it) and she started learning surprisingly quickly!
RaineyPets I don’t know enough about the breed to tell you. I would contact a trainer or behavioralist to have her evaluated! Also there is no registration under federal law, all of the websites are scams.
Thank you so much. I'm researching about it and I've looked up videos of Italian Greyhound Service Dogs and there are a few. She does have a few bad habits like barking at other dogs when nervous but she's getting better with it and I think with a bit of training from a professional she'd be able to get over her nervousness around them. Also, do you take treats with you when your dog is working? I've heard some people use treats and some don't.
RaineyPets Yes you would definitely need to stop that behavior for her to be a service dog. I take treats with me because Wesley is still training. Treats are really up to the handler’s discretion.
Wesley the Service Doodle Yeah, she is still in “puppy stages,” as Italian greyhounds don’t fully mature until they are 5 or 6. And she’s 3. I’ve been trying to socialise her by taking her to the dog park. We got our dogs too late, so they picked up some habits. We got them at 12 weeks instead of 8 because the breeder was too busy and lived 6 hours away from us. I’ve read you should really socialise them before that and it’s a lot easier. But it is getting better everyday, so I hope that she is now slowly growing out of that and the training is working.
I have a moniature poodle hes 7 i got him last yr on craiglist he does cardiac alert im on fixed income
I have Rottweiler as a service dog when we go into Town people always are so scared of him it makes me so mad when their dogs try to attack him and he walks away and they scream and say hurt my dog he hurt my dog he's one of the sweetest dogs in the world
I'm so sorry this happens! It's not fair.
Me service dog is from a rescue and we don’t now wut she is
Great video
Thank you so much!
Where is the best place, in your opinion, to get help in finding the right breed of service dog?
what do you think about setters and setter mixes as a SD ?
Anna Klára Strmenská I don’t know anyone personally who has one but i would say that as long as you temperament test, research, and get a trainer, you have a good chance. They are hunting dogs so they have a strong prey drive and are not as easily trained as other dogs so just be careful!
I actually have an english setter mix (most likely labrador and setter mix) PSDiT which comes from a shelter. In the beginning he was very scared but slowly we got to see his true character, he got traits from both breeds. From the setter side, he has a bit of the energy, the size and the coat. From the labrador side, he has the sensitiveness and the great handler dog bond. So really, from my point of view, setters (or setter mixes) can be great, but like any other breed, you could find a dog that only has the negative traits of both breeds so you really can't generalize by breed... Anyway, if you are currently looking for a SD prospect than good luck to you, i hope you find what you're looking for!
I have German shorthair pointers and standards longhair dauchund and they both alert to seizures. Untrained too
Someone is donating me a poodle. Hes 5 months. And he comes from Champion bloodline. I should be getting him before halloween. I cant wait... im also going to make a youtube for us so😊
you’re so pretty!
Anyone have thoughts about terriers? That’s Nike
Both my American Staffordshire Terriers, my current one(male) and my previous one(female) are/were phenomenal seizure alert and response dogs! They were easily trainable and caught on really quick to their response tasks.
And both just naturally are/were able to detect and alert minutes before a seizure.
I beg to differ, my daughter's service dog is a border collie and he is calm and more well behaved than most goldens, retrievers, and doodles I know. .
I have nothing against border collies! They make great service dog when trained correctly!
Okay, but your dog is the exception, not the rule.
I have a physiatrc service dog in training husky
I’m looking for a perfect service dog prospect and I’m considering a Siberian husky. Do you think they make good service dogs?
What do you think about Australian Shepherds ? I know it’s not as common but I think that it fits my life style IDK
German Shepherd, easy to groom? Ha. Nope, high velocity blower and lots of shed control. They don’t call them German shedders for nothing. And border collies shedding habits you were spot on, they are very like aussies with wariness of strangers so it is a lot harder to find an appropriate border collie match than it would be say to find an appropriate golden match, but borders are not very stubborn as they are intelligent and have the habit of doing the opposite of what you want because they know the difference. Just some food for thought.
I've been looking into spaniels as service dogs- cocker, cavalier, springer, cross poodles- anyone had or trained some in this area? Both med alert and psychiatric are my goals. And are the bigger dogs like a German shepherd harder to manage for someone with chronic illnesses so less energy to walk them and no strength to pull them into line?
Nita C I have not had experience with those but hopefully someone who has will come across this! Also it’s not necessary the size that makes the breed need more energy, etc. Wesley for example, is 32 lbs so he’s a medium size and he has CRAZY amounts of energy. It all depends on the breed!
I seen a video of the cavlier king charles spaniel as a service dog. The womans son had episodes as she called it and since they have had the dog she said her son has been a lot better. I think she also mentioned something about sugar or something like that. The dog could sense the boys sugar was either high or low and actually alerted them with a bark. So they trained the dog to be an alert dog for that. I also have done research on the spaniel and they would make great psychiatric service dogs because they are intelligent and calm so easy to train without having the energy. Honestly was the breed i wanted but wasn't willing to give a arm and a leg for one from petland 😂😂 but if you find a breeder it could be wayyyyy cheaper than petland
Did anyone else get the “register your dog online now as a service animal and bring them everywhere!” Commercial before this video?
Would anyone recommend a Border Collie as a first time dog for PTSD and anxiety?
Piece of education poodle mixes are not hypoallergenic only purebred poodles are please dont give false info i have been around purebreds all my life as well as mixed breeds and my allergies are bad with mixed breeds the only mix that is hypoallergenic is a bichion frise poodle mix
Hi my stepfather is deathly allergic to dogs and we have a Aussiedoodle! He has absolutely no problems with the dog! So maybe you should stop giving false info.
I hear chihuahuas make horrible service dogs....always barking....so hyper........
Okie dokes I’m trolling lol
I'm laughing at this, thank you!
Wesley the Service Doodle you’d be surprised at how many times I don’t add the “I’m trolling” part and so many ppl agree with me lol
And I’m like uh but my name says “Lilly the service chihuahua” lmao if you click my picture it’ll take you to my page where you’ll see a chihuahua tasking lol
But normally what happens is I play along with them for a bit than link them to my “tasks a Small Psychiatric Service Dog can do” video and I never hear from them again lol
Lilly the Service Chihuahua I saw your name and I was like what........??? And then I realized!! But honestly I’ve seen some great chihuahua service dogs so don’t listen to anyone
Wesley the Service Doodle haha honestly when I first started I let it really get to me.
Now I’m like psh please!
My dog is better trained than most of the big dogs I’ve seen so I just sit and laugh cuz I know what kind of work I put in with her haha
It’s also why I now refrain from calling ppl fake now days because I was once called that too
Dan and Lilly I have a chihuahua that doesn’t bark. He’s a SDIT 6 months, and we train twice a day. He’s doing great! No aggression to people or other dogs. In fact the bigger the dog the more Gunner wants to play with them! I needed a small guy because I travel on a Harley. So a chihuahua was perfect for me. The great thing is that he loves to ride on the bike. So maybe I have an abnormal chihuahua, but he’s the best, smartest, and most wonderful dog I’ve ever partnered with.
