I think that black stuff is coltan. It is a mineral that is cobalt tantalum oxide. Tantalum is also important. It is used in surgery tools. It is extremely hard. Tantalum is used in tantalum capacitors, the best kind of capacitors.

Changes that Congo made to mining laws in 2002 led did attract investment in Congolese copper and cobalt projects. However Glencore dominates the coltan market in DRC. Its Mutanda mine shipped 24,500 tons of cobalt from its Mutanda mine last year, 40% of Congo DRC’s output and nearly a quarter of global production. T Glencore’s Katanga Mining project is resuming as well and should produce 300,000 tons of copper and 20,000 tons of cobalt by 2019, according to Glencore.
Glencore is an anglo-swiss corporation, majority owned by Qatar!

Lack of accountability. lul . China is colonizing and has its first military base in Africa. Selling land rights to chinese companies, gov being corrupted and put into place. Boo hoo europeans, africa is so late to the modern world, without baseline morals it would have been completely taken over.

Working for one Or two Euros is not a "living wage" and should not even be considered a "slave wage".
It's a prisoners wage because a person can't escape from the job from such a wage, especially if they have to borrow money to live.

They ARE surviving, but we can't call that "living" by US standards. These people will never be able to afford anything that would be considered a home. Eat, yes, but what do these people have to eat to stay alive? Steak? Lobster?
Are you as happy with your cushy life, as much as I am?
Don't let it blind you to the suffering of many people in the world.
Be quietly grateful and try to do things that make this world a better place for more people.

Apparently, there are so may ignorant people online, let me educate you- Any president that rises up to defend Congo and make America lose access will be killed -Ask Patrice lumumba, also ask Mobutu what happened when he got tired of being America's play thing. (of course our people are greedy and selfish- so they prey on greedy Africa leaders. They can live us alone with our greed and corruption, at least the loot it will be circulating within the country and not migrating abroad to build your roads, schools, and other institutions while you send us "AID" - breadcrumbs from our own dinner!.
Of course the aid money is well advertised, but no one advertises the theft of resources, the arming of Rebels to create chaos, consistent meddling in elections to install puppet YES SIR leaders.

Cobalt is not a mineral. The mineral here is mainly heterogenite, CoO(OH), which is the ore. Also, the green powder is not cobalt but cobalt(II) oxide, CoO.

i commented that it was sad seeing people reduced to poverty and their land destroyed in this manner. And some fool commented that I should not use cellphones etc. I want to say so because I don't like seeing what has been done, it means that i have to have the solution? So why can't they just be paid fairly?

The Congo was supposed to be the Switzerland of Africa with all their mineral wealth and other natural resource yet it is the basket case of Africa and all this is due to poor leadership, greed and indifference. You cant blame the Chinese they are only acting in their interest if only the Congolese people and their leaders can do the same and act in the interest of the people of Congo.
