I have a generally very sweet cat but even with him I was so nervous I wouldn't be able to train him. I spent 2 weeks working him up to full treatment. First I surrounded the inhaler in treats so he would get used to being near it. Then I'd hold a treat by the mask, and if he even moved towards it, he'd get a treat. Then I'd hold him and place the mask over his face, just a touch, followed by treats. Then I'd hold it over his face for longer and longer, followed by treats. Finally I introduced the medication, which scared him a bit at first. But now he's a champ! He gets in position, calmly lets me administer the meds, and purrs waiting for his treat
I was convinced I didn't have a chance of getting my cat Ruby to use an aerosol. It took a couple of weeks to slowly get her used to it using normal dry cat food as treats. Now she jumps on the bed waiting for it. Works far better than oral pills too.
I know, there is only me and It isn't easy with one person. I have spent 3wks just getting her use to the mask. I'm afraid when have the medicine in it will go crazy. I am ready to attempt it but I admit I am fearful she won't do it.
crystalheart9 I hope your baby gets through it 😓 it took my cat a month to get better and $3700 in hospital fees to figure out why he was so sick. Turns out he has feline herpes 😅 I’m just glad he’s doing better now. Sending you good vibes! 💕
@@mrsshugo It's working out great! I have to admit when I first started working with my kitty I didn't think I was going to have success and it did take me about 5 weeks of slowly working her up to accepting the chamber and meds. I had to go really slow with my kitty due to her age and she has a bad heart. I broke it down into really small steps like just holding the mask only near her face and petting her several times a day. Then when she was ok with that I would place the mask over her face just for a second or two and I would pet her and keep her calm. When she accepted that I put the mask onto the chamber and had to work with her getting use to breathing through the chamber (no medicine yet) Then the last step was adding the meds. I didn't think I was going to be able to train her at first and had to keep her on prednisolone to control her coughing while she was in training. The prednisolone is bad for her heart and the doctor said the inhaler would be much better for her and the meds would get into her lungs where it's needed. Anyway, at the beginning I didn't think I would be able to do it but now she is calm and takes her meds every evening perfectly. Sorry I wrote so much but I wanted to let you know it did take some patience and small steps to get there. I think using some treat rewards would be helpful too. My kitty is elderly and she isn't very food motivated so I had to use petting and talking to her. Let me know how you do with your kitty and don't give up!
I know, I don't have any help. Update: I just wanted to let anyone who is trying to do this alone know it has been a slow process (about 8 weeks) but I am reaching a point where she is calmer and breathing in the medicine now. I have taken my time and been very gentle with her and she is accepting it finally. Yay!
Yes I've had good luck with just myself giving him his medicine wth the chamber! I'm just calm wth him and hes pretty good at it but now he knows the spray sound , lol, and walks away but I still get it down him.
@@opalzone I had to break it down into small steps. I started with only the mask and worked several times a day getting my kitty use to the feel of the mask without the chamber attached. It took me 3 weeks on just that step (she is elderly) until she was pretty calm with allowing me to put the mask on her face. Next step was the chamber and mask no meds yet and that was another couple of weeks working with that. When she was calm with the chamber I started her with the medicine. That was a set back again because she didn't want to inhale the meds. I kept gently trying once a day and she might get one or two breaths in. I had to keep her on prednisolone tablets to control her asthma while she was getting use to using the inhaler. Finally she was calmer and began to breathe normally and get the medicine. It was just a matter of keeping it a calm experience and being persistent. I didn't think she was going to accept it but she finally did. I hope this helps, it did take awhile but they will get use to it if you don't give up. Let me know how you do with your kitty.
How long does the mask need to stay on the cat’s face? How many breaths? I’ve been training my cat to lick Churus from inside the mask. Can they lick the mask and still inhale the medication?
Isn’t this for breathing? My cat started sneezing or coughing but he doesn’t look he has a breathing issue. He looks more like he has an allergy not asthma but my vet said it’s an asthma. Does asthma have an allergic asthma? Not sure if it’s not an asthma but can we use this for allergic reaction like coughing?
Coughing and sneezing in cats are symptoms of asthma if they are doing it regularly... It means your cat can't breathe properly. Cats don't normay cough
Yes. I just brought my kitty in yesterday. They put her on pills n I bought a arow chamber for a small child for her. Allergies. Exs ..smoke causes asthma.
I've heard cats smelling certain essential oils, dust, mold, mildew, allergies can all trigger asthma symptoms like wheezing, coughing, unproductive retching (no hairball), rattle in chest, lethargy, reduced appetite can be treated with a steroid (needs to be monitored), inhaler, rescue inhaler
Can you use an oxygen tank to deliver in the dose? My cat struggles to wear this and it would be easier to put them in a sealed box and spray it in while he’s in there?
Maybe size down the mask! That was helpful to me. Also, you can check it yourself by breathing in with the chamber and seeing if the valve moves. If it does not, contact the place you get it and ask for a new one. Also, ensure everything else is assembled, and the actual inhaler is well inserted in case of air leakage. Sometimes cats, when in fear, stop breathing; give it a moment and try it out without spraying the inhaler in case your cat is in fear. I hope the best to both of you! I know how hard this process is and how overwhelming it can be. Best of luck!
Every video I've viewed the kitty has been very docile? You must do something to have them be so willing to sit there while you do this procedure. I live alone and my newly rescued kitty is 20 lbs." He was that big at adoption"!
These are cat actors in these videos. 😅 I wish my baby were that well behaved and cooperative. She does not like anything going into her mouth and she's smart would not eat her food with anything in it. She'd rather starve than eat it 😅 These videos are supposed to help but sometimes can be so frustrating, especially when most us don't have pets this cooperative. 🤔🤔
My cat Olive is very skittish. She wanted nothing to do with the Flovent for a long time. She was on steroids for months and I was desperate to get her off of them. A few months ago I found video where a woman used a paste treat, so I found one called "Churu" on Amazon. Olive didn't like the Churu at first, so I tried getting her accustomed to it before trying it with the mask. I just kept offering it, putting some on a plate, etc. Soon she loved it and couldn't get enough!! Next, I just put a little bit of Churu inside the mask to get her to associate the mask with treats. This was the only way I could get it anywhere near her face without her running away. I then got her used to having it attached to the spacer with the inhaler at the end, but she would not tolerate a puff to her face. So I just held it away from her and cupped my hand over the mask as shown in the video above, then put it near her face. The problem for the last few months was that I was not able to make a seal with her face, she would just like the treat from the mask. So I watched yet another video and have been leaning my stomach/chest on her back, and wrapping my non-dominant arm around her, then putting just the mask up to her face (without the Churu in it). She backs up and tries to get away but I have her surrounded. To my amazement she let me **briefly** put the mask to her face the third time I tried. I gave her Churu straight form the tube each time. I should mention that routine has been huge for us. After breakfast it's time for medicine and Churu. Same thing after dinner. I make sure we always go to the same spot in my bedroom as well, and always give her and her brother Fig some dental treats after the whole process. Hopefully I'll be able to train her to use the Aerokat spacer more effectively after a few weeks of this new technique. I hope this helps someone out there -- please don't give up!!!
