Decades ago a friend of my brother had a Belgium made pre WWII FN. It was built with a sidecar chassis to carry a large gun. the sidecar chassis was made, from memory, from approximately 50MM tube. There are details about them in Wikipedia, other on-line sites, etc. Of course he never had the gun.😀 It had reverse gear but a lot of it was more like a small car engine in a bike frame with handlebar mounted controls. At the time there was only three in the UK and he had two of them, one being used for donor spare parts for the machine he was using. I believe the idea of them was so that they could get up to the front line or behind enemy lines, make the attack and make a fast getaway, by pre WWII standards.
I would think even smaller displacement motorcycles could gain an electrical (engine off) reverse by simply redesigning the starter motor and adding switching...so for instance you stop the bike, get off and click a reverse switch that then powers the starter motor backwards and allows you to effortlessly guide the bike backwards into a desired parking spot. The engineering challenge would be how to mechanically drive the counter shaft when in "reverse" rather than the crankshaft ....perhaps simply making the starter motor's shaft double ended with single direction drives on each end.... I am certain it COUD be done....and as long as it did not add more than a pound or two it would be a very nice feature for some folks.....any 450+llb motorcycle can be a chore to maneuver around backwards or even forwards not running ....and there is already a nice battery and powerful electrical motor on the bike! Of course some touring bikes already have more of real automotive style reverse but I bet that adds considerable weight compared to how little is actually needed....in my option ....at least on smaller bikes. BTW with Electric motorcycles there will be no reason all bikes cant have reverse....I suppose trials riders on electric trials bikes would probably even figure out how to actually RIDE a motorcycle backwards feet up on pegs! I mean especially since they can already stand on the pegs and balance at zero mph lol
I have a 2012 Tri-Glide HD that has an electronic reverse. On a trike you need a reverse but I don't like the design. It uses the starter and pops a circuit breaker sometimes.
I foresee some funny videos coming. You know all the posers who have a hard enough time going forward. I see a guy on a $60,000 Harley with a black leather vest on, even though he doesn't belong to any club, forgetting it's in reverse and giving it full throttle for the camera. Goes 40 miles an hour backward into a pond.
harley servi-car from the factory had reverse, last couple of years production also had the electric start. may be a good start for a mobility scooter project

Thank you for your good comment.

Thats so nice . Hate backing up on my ultra
Is that an add on to the stock Harley six speed, or a whole different trans? I never heard of a dyna with reverse.

Awesome...👍👍👍
This shoul have happen 40years ago my knees hurtafte pushing backward my heavy harley for 30 years
I remember some of the hogs back in the 60s had optional reverse gears, you need it with an almost half ton motorcycle.
I like that bike

Man that's wild.
Where can o find this for my RK 2010?
I do everything backwards, so that would suit me! lol
Hmm, many motorcycles - from the wars years onwards - had a reverse gear.
Cooooool....😎🤙🤘🤘🤘
harley servi-car trike project for those of us that can hardley walk
Interesting Vid
Wow I'm in a wheelchair and have been looking for exactly this to make a proper bitchin trike

Amazonas 1600 also has reverse gear. Until I know, it was the first bike with reverse gear ever.
harley in the mid 40's
Watching it in 2020
Real bikers don't wear shorts.
