Yes I would love to visit the water reservoir with you. That Praça das Amoreiras is so lovely. I missed it when in Lisbon. I was there back in 1985 looking for office spaces for a multinational company. I found 3 floors in one of the 3 towers and spent a lot of time there. Why do you qualify architect Taveira as infamous? It is fun architecture for fun. Why not? Lisbon has lots of those modern buildings, disrespectful of the more historical image, that is what makes Lisbon so interesting and fun. Thank you yet again for a nice video.
You were there in mid-80s, when Amoreiras was complety transformed! 🙂 I'm glad you asked why I used the word infamous. I wanted to mention it in the video, but I also wanted to keep it family-friendly, so I ended up parts of the commentary in the final version. In the late 80s, Tomás Taveiras was involved in a sex scandal that is still one of the most talked about events of that decade in Portugal. Yes, some of this work is a bit controversial, but most people couldn't even list 2 buildings he designed. However, everyone knows about that sex scandal, that's why he is infamous. 😅 I do like the Amoreiras Towers, I just wish they could have been 3 times taller. This may be a surprise to many people, but I love skyscrapers! I love medieval architecture, but also supertall skyscrapers covered in glass, something we will never have in Portugal. I'm not a fan of the buildings Tomás Taveira designed in the 2000's though, not at all. The ones from the 80's get my seal of approval. Thank you and have a great week! 🙂
@@POVTours Now I remember about the sex scandal Taveiras was involved in, I had forgotten about that but not his exuberant designs. Thanks God the towers are not taller, it is always a bit worrying when approaching the airport by plane from the west. Wishing you good walks around beautiful Portugal.
Another nice video that gives us a better insight into the many different beautiful neighbourhoods of Lisbon. It would also be nice to have some information on the habits of the citizens of Lisbon, in this respect I really admire the cleanliness with which they keep public places, it is truly remarkable!
Great suggestion Giorgio, I will try to add information about the culture and habits of each neighborhood, because they all have their own idiosyncrasies. 😊
I for one would love to have an episode dedicated to the Mãe d'Água reservoir. Also, I've never quite understood if the Galeria do Loreto is reachable on the Mãe d'Água tours, finding the EPAL web site slightly confusing. If a more extended water theme is considered, it would also be interesting with more information on the Reservatório da Patriarcal underneath the Príncipe Real garden as well as the Barbadinhos Steam Pumping Station. These things seem to be underreported in the guide books (at least the English language ones).
When I visited the Lisbon Aquedut, they gave me a leaflet that more or less explains (or tries to explain) the places that can be visited. I still have that leaflet, I'll need to study it because it's a bit confusing. Probaly the same experience you're having with their website! Yes, a water themed video is a great idea! From the aquedut to all the reservoirs and pumping stations.
Olá Miguel. Tudo bem???
Lots of love to the neighborhood with most romantic name ❤ endless thanks for historical information about aqueduct and reservoir 😊 also thanks for capturing that tiny chapel😊 Seems, not only fado tells us about romantic nature of Portuguese people but also name of neighborhood, garden, arch and etc 😉
Yes, please do take us on a tour of the reservoir. It looks like that would be interesting. I've visited the little Aguas Livres museum in Lisbon and found it fascinating to learn about all the city fountains, etc. I agree with Jan [below] that there are a lot of interesting aspects to the water provision and pumping system - things that are often taken for granted but that are critical to the development and functioning of a city. And thank you for showing a plot on the street map of the route you followed.
Hello Ada! An animated map will be present in all my videos from now on, I'm trying to help the people who want to follow the same routes, which is something that is often requested. 😊
Your videos are wonderful. My aunt and I are going to Lisbon next week and have used your videos to help us plan the trip. Can you recommend a tour guide there to take us to nearby places? Thank you
Hello Jonelle! 😊 I'm glad you find my humble videos useful! Sadly, I don't know any tour guides... I used to know one, but she no longer lives near Lisbon... I usually don't do this, but if you're still looking for a guide, you can send me an email and I'll see if I can do it. 😊
BRAV🤠 Wonderful to recognize familiar hoods. Stayed just downhill on Av. Duque de Loulé. Lunch at Honest Greens, twice. 1000takk again Miguel, for great presentations.
Boa Tarde, Miguel! This video tour, as always, is really interesting, educational and very enjoyable. We love your 4K work! High rise modern architecture can be horribly ugly and/or boring. Much of what you guys built in this neighborhood is innovative and sleek. Not every city can do that. We so much appreciate your pride in your country and everything you do to share life in Portugal with the UA-cam world. If you ever wanted to post a video from inside the old reservoir museum we would definitely watch it! Sending you our always best wishes, from Music City, yes, the Athens of the South, Nashville, USA ! 🙂
Olá John! 😃 I quite like the Amoreiras Towers to be honest, even though I'm probably in the minority. Like I mentioned in the video, modern high rise buildings are a big no-no to most people here, especially some politicians... I will post a video inside the reservoir in the future, but I want to include the 18th century underground canals, galleries and pumping stations along the way. Dunno if this is a feasible plan or not, but I'll see what I can do! Best wishes and see you next Sunday John! (don't miss next week's video, it won't be Braga, but it will be worth it 😉)
@@POVTours … Olá, Miguel! … from another beautiful clear day in Nashville, currently 64° ☀️ My wife and I are starting to joke with each other that you place some highly addictive property into your 4K UA-cam videos. It’s almost like a Pavlov Dog type of thing 😂 Every Sunday we look to see where you are taking everyone this week. This past Sunday I checked your channel and the new video had been up only 5 minutes with already 500 viewers. Wow! You are definitely doing something right in your work of sharing the history and excellence of Portugal 🇵🇹 It’s a joy to be able to send you a coffee sometimes. I wish I could also send a small box of Nashville USA souvenirs to you. That’s how much we enjoy what you teach us of life, both past and present, in your interesting country. Take care and be well. Travel safe! Always! John P.S. my black cat Dulci says hello. She really enjoys seeing the occasional cats you meet on the streets in your walks! 😺😊
@@TheRealKentuckyJ Olá John! Olá John's wife and Dulci too! 😃😺 I had a cat once, his name was Chico. I got him when he was a tiny kitten with a lung infection, at risk of being euthanized at the shelter, but he ended up living a long and happy life. 😊 64° is almost the temperature here today, it's about 68º F at the moment. But it was MUCH warmer two days ago! Ah, addictive videos, I'm afraid that's coming to an end, probably... 😅The outlook for this channel and similar ones is a bit bleak, due to sudden and overhelming market saturation. Literally every week dozens of new channels are created. I'm noticing that videos do well at first, but quickly flatline after a couple of days. Things were different until recently. And this is happening with big and small channels alike. The big channels (with10-20 times more subscribers and views than my channel) will still easily thrive, even if they only get half the views. The small channels will be a financial burden to their owners, 100%. The small-medium sized channels (like mine) will have to think strategically about the type of videos they publish. I didn't start this hobby to make a profit, this is a labor of love without a long-term plan, but I also don't want it to become a big financial liability. 😅😅 If this downward trend continues (and it surely will), I don't think I can continue to publish so many videos of small, remote towns that will never have many views. The ad revenue those videos get doesn't even get close to covering the cost of driving hundreds of miles. And the generous support you and other subscribers give should be used to make content that will be enjoyed by the highest number of people possible, in my humble opinion. This will probably mean more videos of the main Portuguese cities (including Braga), and less of "middle of nowhere picturesque small town"... 🤔 See ya John, and don't miss Sunday's video, it will be a good one, I promise! 😃
@@POVTours …. Hi Miguel! Our usual greetings from America to you and yours! 👩🏼❤️👨🏼 We were the focus of tragedy this week in Nashville when a young woman shot her way into a school and killed 6 people, 3 of them only 9 years old, before police entered the building and killed her. This horrific crime has touched us all. The school is a Christian school in a nice affluent part of town. I’ve driven on the road past the place hundreds of times over the past years. This violence appears to have been targeted and deliberate, not random, perpetrated by a 28 year old woman who identified herself as a transgender male. I am beyond grief at what a mess the USA has become. All of this happened only hours after I posted to you of the wonderful nice sunny day we were having here in Nashville. It sure doesn’t take much time for our lives to instantly face new challenges. Needless to say, these continued serious American problems are why some of us are now looking for better and more peaceful countries to move to … And, I’m sorry to hear of the UA-cam changes you are witnessing. I posted several little UA-cam videos 13 years ago when a Sony camera that also shot video was the current ‘high tech’ 😅 One of my videos, when we were on the road in Kentucky and drove past Fort Knox, where the United States Gold Bullion depositary is located, has had 24,000 views. Two other videos, where I took people on the road with us to show everyone what the Dolly Parton house in Brentwood, TN looks like, have had 3.4K and 5.5K views. It was fun to have a little channel but I never got into doing anything more with it. I never even had the thought to try and get any money from those clips …. We really like the way your focus is on Portugal today, the history of various areas, the occasional Ronaldo like info you reveal (😁) It gets so tiring to see videos where a huge amount of screen time is filled with too much face of the presenter/s speaking instead of their giving us a clear look around at where they are and what they are actually seeing. I remember another video we watched where a young woman taking the ferry boat from Lisbon to a place across the river, where you had already taken us, amazed us when she didn’t stop talking for even 10 seconds! Geez 🙄 Those type of videos make your POV 4K work appear super good in comparison. It’s much more fun when we catch an occasional glimpse of you as a moving shadow on the ground wherever you happen to be walking 😁 I think your type of quality will never go out of style, even if the world starts fixating on fads and trinkets … So, I would say here simply do the best you can, don’t worry so much about what has yet to happen on UA-cam and, as my cat Dulci likes to say to us - it never hurts to ask for what you want 😻 Take care and be well, Miguel. We are sending love to you and Portugal from the sad but wiser today city of Nashville, TN … John & Lora (& Dulci) !
@@TheRealKentuckyJ Olá John, Lora and the real master of the house: Dulci! 🐱 Yes, I watched the news about the tragedy in Nashville... I don't even know what to say, it seems that these terrible events are becoming a common occurence in the US, no? I don't remember if 13 years ago videos could be monetized on UA-cam... Back when I started the channel, I also had no plans of monetizing it with ads, but it became a necessity once I took things more seriously and started uploading content regularly. I've spent a few thousand in camera+computer gear and gas+car maintenance alone due to the channel. 😅 But it's all good, I'm enjoying this unexpected adventure, I see it as my "mission" now. 100 videos already in the bag, here's to another 100 or 200 (at least)! 😃🙌 I make the kind of content I like to watch, we have very similar tastes. I have no interest in vlog-style type of videos, with a person talking and talking and talking, and always getting in front of the things I actually want to see. Have a great evening John! 😊
Gostei do registro do caminho percorrido.
Abraços a partir daqui. Jen 🥰
I'd love to do a guided tour of Mãe da Água reservoir. Just looking at the those aqueduct arches in amongst the buildings is enchanting. A time gone bye. I'm curious about everything and love to learn... so I think it would be really cool! * Ottawa is a city that tore down so many old buildings back before caring about heritage was a thing... and built bland, typical post-war offices and buildings. To look at old photos and film, taken before the 1940's you wouldn't know you in the same city at all.
Same happened in many avenues in Lisbon, especially the Avenida da Republica. So many stunning 19th century buildings that were destroyed in the late 20th century to build low quality, ugly "modern" box-shaped offices and buildings...
I think the lack of love for skyscrapers is genetically coded in Portuguese DNA. Instead of a "modern architecture love" gene, we have a "saudade" gene for architecture of times past- lol. Regardless, thank you for introducing this part of Lisbon!
Your channel looks more and more like a video encyclopedia of Portugal! I like to watch Taveira's buildings but I would not live or work in them. And I hate shopping centers, too. There was a time when the traffic noise of the big cities was not a problem for me. Not anymore. The Amoreiras triumphal arch was inaugurated only a few years before the devastating earthquake of 1755...Perhaps ancestral fears rooted in the tragedy of 1755 contributes to the local dislike of very tall buildings. I see the aqueducts built by the Portuguese and the Spanish as a continuation of the Roman tradition. I had the opportunity to see the aqueduct of Queretaro, Mexico, inaugurated in 1738, when the Spanish were still ruling. The aqueduct of Lisbon is equally impressive. But as far as I know, the Queretaro aqueduct did not provide the locals with a head in a jar! You are doing and amazing work! I hope you never stop. Please make sure that your work is safely stored.
I actually like the buildings Taveira designed in the 80s and early 90s. The ones from the last 15 years are ridiculous, in my humble opinion. Too colorful, full of bizarre little details... they look like something a child would design. 😅 Yes, heads in jars is a Lisbon tradition only. 😁 Speaking of storage, I'm already looking for a second high-capacity external hard-drive to buy. The first one, where I keep all the original unedited files in their uncompressed glory, is getting full. What you see on UA-cam is not the actual quality of the original files, not even close.
Thank you for your wonderful tours! I've been watching a lot of them for months and am getting a feel for your beautiful country. I have really noticed the lack of people in every video. Is it because Portugal has a smaller population or do you intentionally shoot videos while people are at work-or early in the am on weekends?
Thank you so much for your kind words! 😊 Portugal does have a small population, and it is declining. In smaller towns, especially those not on the coast, there are significant demographic challenges. Population there is aging and declining, young people move to bigger cities on the coast (such as Lisbon, Porto, etc), so those places do look a bit deserted. Especially considering that I mostly focus on the historic centers of each town (because they're more picturesque and interesting), where very few people actually live. Most people live in more modern neighborhoods in the suburbs, with better services, parks, public transport, etc. Historic centers are fun for tourists and good for short-term accommodation, but challenging to live there long term. I also film many of my videos on Sundays, which is traditionally the quieter day in Portugal, except in the touristy parts of the bigger cities. 🙂

Hello Sigurd! 😃 I don't remember if I've ever filmed Avenida Duque de Loulé for a video, but I need to do it too!
Thank you and have a great week!

Always!
John
P.S. my black cat Dulci says hello.
64° is almost the temperature here today, it's about 68º F at the moment.
If this downward trend continues (and it surely will), I don't think I can continue to publish so many videos of small, remote towns that will never have many views.
See ya John, and don't miss Sunday's video, it will be a good one, I promise!
Yes, I watched the news about the tragedy in Nashville...
But it's all good, I'm enjoying this unexpected adventure, I see it as my "mission" now. 100 videos already in the bag, here's to another 100 or 200 (at least)! 😃🙌
I make the kind of content I like to watch, we have very similar tastes. I have no interest in vlog-style type of videos, with a person talking and talking and talking, and always getting in front of the things I actually want to see.
Have a great evening John! 😊
Dreaming about Lisbon already, thank you Miguel, great video!
Glad you enjoyed it Sandra! 😃
Vou tentar filmar o interior do reservatório! Abraços! 😊🙌
Muito obrigada. Amoreiras! ❤

Boa tarde.
@@POVTours Some fools called it ‘progress’. Ugh! 🙁
I think the lack of love for skyscrapers is genetically coded in Portuguese DNA. Instead of a "modern architecture love" gene, we have a "saudade" gene for architecture of times past- lol. Regardless, thank you for introducing this part of Lisbon!
It really is in our DNA. 😁 I do like a good skyscraper though...
Yes, heads in jars is a Lisbon tradition only. 😁
Speaking of storage, I'm already looking for a second high-capacity external hard-drive to buy. The first one, where I keep all the original unedited files in their uncompressed glory, is getting full. What you see on UA-cam is not the actual quality of the original files, not even close.
@@POVTours About Taveira's buildings: that's why I wrote what I wrote about them. They look like children's building toys.
@@Fierbepere Exactly!
