There's something special about the PS1 startup sound, something that perfectly fits the entire experience. Or maybe that sound is what subconsciously makes the experience magical. All PS1 games had something magical about them. Something comfortably unsettling. It doesn't matter what game it was, it could be (here comes the list of games) MTV Snowboarding, or Atari Classics, or MK4, or WipEout, or Tomb Raider 1, 2, 3, or Spyro 1, 2, 3, or Gran Turismo 2, or MGS, or FFVII through FFIX, or Silent Hill, or Colin McRae Rally 2.0, or THPS2, or PaRappa, or Twisted Metal, or Syphon Filter, or GTA2, or Tekken 3, or MediEvil, or Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, or CRASH FREAKING BANDICOOT 3: WARPED, or Lego Rock Raiders, or Mickey's Wild Adventure, or Driver, or Resident Evil, or Worms Armageddon, or Medal of Honor, or Ridge Racer, or demo CDs, or those hundreds of other games I forgot to mention but I know someone will, or ACTUAL HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE - there always was that creepy yet warm, pleasant vibe. Was it the startup sound? Was it the CRT screen being so close-up, giving away static charge? Or the slight humming it made during the loading screens? Or did the hum come from the audibly spinning CD? Was it the shaky polygons computed in integer math? It's kinda weird. Because I'm not sure it's any of those. The PS2 and the PS3... they also had the same effect on me. Still do. It's weird. Never owned a PS4. Maybe I'll buy the PS5? I don't know if anyone else feels the same. My final conjecture is that... it's just the way the entire experience is crafted by Sony. Because watching the stream gave me chills, especially during those CGI transitions. Don't take me as a fanboy, obviously I'm one of those obnoxious PC master race dickheads, I just grew up with a PS1. Well, not one, 3, in fact. I mean, 3 different PS1-s. But a PS3 as well. I have it hung on a cork board, I feel it looking at me like in one of those weird baby doll commercials, lol. I'll shut up.
That unsettling feeling is probably a result of the interpretation and abstraction necessary to make sense of the low polygon count. You're investing yourself in the game by necessity, which makes it mysterious, ensouled... not always to a huge extent, since it's a game, but regardless.
Wow, I never would have suspected that type of sound sampling from Sony. I guessed 2 sound samples at most running at the speed we hear. Not playing itself at various speeds. Great video!
This start up by far is the vitamin C of sound. These bios sounds deserve to be preserved in the national recording registry of the library of Congress, even though it’s not just one recording. It’s iconic. It’s invigorating. It’s timeless. I want to compose an entire ambient soundtrack out of these sounds

It makes sense that the name "PlayStation" is inspired by the term "workstation" and the startup sound literally screams "Do not underestimate the power of PlayStation"!
Wow, this really surprised me, I thought it was recorded as-is, it certainly makes sense though. It must have taken a lot of trial-error, to get the right speed and pitch to make it sound like it does now!

I remember being 12 and buying Final Fantasy 7 along with my PS1, I remember the loading screen from this video made me super excited everytime because I couldn't wait to play! Great memories
The PS1 startup is so iconic to me, and I never had any idea that it was just three tiny samples cleverly manipulated in real-time. Amazing what the engineers did with limited resources in those days.
Oh boy, i remember the day when i got the PlayStation in fall of 1996 like it was yesterdy. I had my Amiga 500 and Mega Drive on my smaller monitor but when i got the PS i got to use it on our new big screen TV. Turning it on i was instantly hit with the chime and i was in awe. Not only the sound but the colors also made a big impact. Only judging from that opening chime and visuals i knew this was going to be an awesome console!
There’s a subtle bonus effect to the PS1 startup sound that I like to believe was intentional (but can’t confirm, lol) - the multi frequency sweep makes cheap televisions sound better than they actually are and great televisions sound *amazing*, and what better to show that your console was the future than “magically” making your TV - any TV - sound hi-fi?
Agreed, it was almost like a digital audio optimization ... Sony did make use of memory very efficiently. Case in point, look how Crash Bandicoot turned out with it's graphics and 3-D playing field. It hacked available memory on both the PSOne motherboard as well as the CD ... stretched software and hardware to it's limits at the time
35 years old and this takes me back to my best friends and I as kids turning this on late night to play jet moto, twisted metal, resident evil, tomb raider, odd world and on and on... hard to believe it was all those years ago. Sucks getting older, I'd give anything for a day back in that era again.
First console I owned. Best intro by far. I occasionally find clips of it on UA-cam and blast it on my friend's home theater set up. That and the THX sound too.
Excellent video! Reminds me of the process that sound engineers used in Jurassic Park. They combined/altered sounds of modern animals to create the haunting roars and screams of the dinosaurs. Even today, the dinosaurs seem real.
This is actually similar to how Bejeweled 2's music works. It uses a .mo3 file that is just a collection of MP3/Vorbis audio samples that get layered and manipulated. It allowed the game to provide 40 minutes of music from a 428KB file. If they just used normal audio files, at 256kb/s, 40 minutes of music would take up 76 MB. This was a huge improvement for a downloadable game in 2004.
BeyondTheNetwork.it was the file I found in the Bejeweled 2 files. It was composed by Skaven, who is well-known from the demo scene of the 1990s. I have a bunch of .mod and .s3m files from them. Perhaps later revisions of the game switched to the more space-efficient .mo3 format. The Impulse Tracker format version is 4.03 MB.

fearful harmony is actually that sound like at 0.25 speed and some Semitones down
Such attention to detail and snooping into the code of a gaming history gem is as cool as it gets.
Love this old-school startup sound! Very nostalgic after I was born in '87! PS1 was my third console after moving on from the SNES and NES.
Born in 1988. Being able to play the original PlayStation was amazing.
It's opening audio is iconic to me.
Impressive. I feel like I've witnessed a secret I "shouldn't have," like seeing the inside of a dishwasher as it works. 😂
If looking inside a dishwasher mid-operation makes you feel like stuck-on grease, then I suggest you avoid the Technology Connections YT channel.
I just discovered you but as soon as you opened the CD tray, I love you now. That's one of my all-time favorite games.
THE MOST MEMORABLE startup just oozing with nostalgia and is from a time where games were blowing the minds of kids.
To be honest, I wasn't expecting much, but color me thoroughly impressed! I never would have guessed that's how the Start-Up sound worked. I really wish Sony would re-use this old start-up or do something similar.
Omfg, i just had a shiver down my spine when i reheard the introduction to the startup sound again. It has been a long time since i've felt something like thi and it felt good.
This is exactly what I wanted to see from the rabbit hole I was going in. Thank you!
You're very welcome!
2:46 so that means that personified fear is actually part of the intro. Heh. And i thought it was just a corrupted mix if all the intro soundeffects. Good to know
Hearing all of the samples separated individually explains a lot behind why Fearful Harmony sounds the way it does also
There's something special about the PS1 startup sound, something that perfectly fits the entire experience.
Comfortably unsettling... That's an interesting term, but definitely fits.
So simple yet so amazing. My favorite combo.
This start up by far is the vitamin C of sound. These bios sounds deserve to be preserved in the national recording registry of the library of Congress, even though it’s not just one recording. It’s iconic. It’s invigorating. It’s timeless. I want to compose an entire ambient soundtrack out of these sounds
hearing this makes me cry i miss the good old days
awh that startup music just hits you right in the nostalgia
PS1 still has the best startup sound ever created.
*Hell Yeah I Was Born In 1989 And The Start Up Sound For The* *"PS1,PS2"* *&* *"The Background Music In (*Red&Blue*) The First Pokémon Game On The Gameboy" Bring Me The Most Ultimate Nostalgia*
So fearful harmony is all of these sounds with no effects playing in loops
It makes sense that the name "PlayStation" is inspired by the term "workstation" and the startup sound literally screams "Do not underestimate the power of PlayStation"!
the distorted bell sound at 2:46 and was used for Fearful Harmony was crazy!
everyone who have played PS1 in the 90s was a great nostalgia
Wow, this really surprised me, I thought it was recorded as-is, it certainly makes sense though. It must have taken a lot of trial-error, to get the right speed and pitch to make it sound like it does now!
Best boot up sound of any counsel, and very interesting on how it was created, i would've never thought that.
It was like something iconic from the 90's every japanesse technology hardware has this unique and "high-tech-y" sounds
Simple times, one of the best for sure thanks for this
Now I have to find a video with the intro slowed down like that, that was amazing
Wth you actually have quality.
You need a shout out by someone bigger to get audience
You could try reddit or a forum.
Just don't go to 4chan.
They're merciless :v
Yep. I miss that sound. It definitely brings back memories, Thank You.
That is amazing that only three sounds were used but were mixed in and edited up to give us the sound we're familiar with.-
I was born in 2001 and this was my first console, now 20 years later I'm still watching videos about it. Mesmerizing.
Does anybody get chills every time they hear the playstation sound, i do rip
I remember being 12 and buying Final Fantasy 7 along with my PS1, I remember the loading screen from this video made me super excited everytime because I couldn't wait to play! Great memories
I love that PS1 start up sound so much. It's the sound of my childhood.
The PS1 startup is so iconic to me, and I never had any idea that it was just three tiny samples cleverly manipulated in real-time. Amazing what the engineers did with limited resources in those days.
thanks, always love who or how cerated that magical sound.
Yeah; there's just something so pleasant about it that I had to make a tribute of sorts. So many memories in that sound!
Cerated?
Oh boy, i remember the day when i got the PlayStation in fall of 1996 like it was yesterdy.
I had my Amiga 500 and Mega Drive on my smaller monitor but when i got the PS i got to use it on our new big screen TV.
Turning it on i was instantly hit with the chime and i was in awe. Not only the sound but the colors also made a big impact.
Only judging from that opening chime and visuals i knew this was going to be an awesome console!
When I hear
"BSSSSSMMMMMNNNN...BSSSMNNNNNNN....pling...pling...pling.........pling"
I hit like
I remember how excited I got as it got to the "PlayStation" part of the intro. "Get in my disc is working!!"
That makes sense! Those cheap speakers in a lot of the old CRT televisions had very uneven frequency response.
This was the best sound we hear back in the days as kids. I was born in 91
best video on anything in the entire universe. Exactly how in depth I wanted it!
when this sounds hits a real man, tears run in your face
First console I owned. Best intro by far. I occasionally find clips of it on UA-cam and blast it on my friend's home theater set up. That and the THX sound too.
The fearful harmony was made from the sound samples in the startup like the tingling but slowed down
I still have my Playstation 1 & I sometimes still play it to this day. The startup sound is always pleasant to hear.
Excellent video! Reminds me of the process that sound engineers used in Jurassic Park. They combined/altered sounds of modern animals to create the haunting roars and screams of the dinosaurs. Even today, the dinosaurs seem real.
I wish you had assembled all the sound you made to recreate the PS1 startup sound :p
Good video, now i know how the Nostalgia Theme Song was made !
Wow this analysis surprised me, amazing how that worked, I woulda never guessed!
I wasn't a PlayStation kid but that sound is so satisfying.
same im an xbox kid it sounds weird haha "xbox kid" i know its an oxymoron but what were referring to is a name as per the kid who we once were when we played the console we liked I played with a PlayStation 3 not even 1 2 or 4 5 just 3 and it was my dads so I played cars 1 and 2 there but xboxs console is my favorite so there thus I am an XBOX KID!!!
I was 8 y.o. in 94 !
Nostalgia...
Wow! detail to the bone! Very interesting. I always loving that intro sound. Thanks for sharing!
Amazing. The boot composition will always stay epic for an entire generation. Would be fun if Sony understood why people love it so much. It isn’t just about nostalgia.
Amazing stuff man, I'm still in love with the PSX, my favorite console of all time :D
When you hear that start up, you know you’re getting quality!
Wow! What an awesome & informative video. Wonderful background on such a core part of my childhood. Thanks man, subbed!
Pretty cool! Never put two and two together before on this
