Free tip Friday / tool review Kotto fume extractor I bought this off Amazon. Look for videos every Saturday. And occasionally in between with quick tips! Follow me @chesapeakerepair
These have a HEPA filter option instead of the junk charcoal one. Use that and it's decent. Also get a Hakko FR-301 and you'll wonder why you messed with the manual solder suckers for years.
Worth noting Kotto does also sell HEPA filters for this unit on Amazon. They're a HEPA filter with a carbon filter attached to the back so they should pull out both particulates and VOCs. The rating of the HEPA filter isn't specified but probably a better bet than carbon alone.
@@ChesapeakeRepair hey my friend. If you want to stick it better to a wall or affix it more solid without it being permanent, I use Velcro tape/Velcro strips they have some very strong one's and work amazing you need lot's of force to detach it, and you can cut it with scissors to whatever size you need it. If you're in doubt it it will hold put a little dab of hot glue on the strip. And it works
the holes in that charcoal filter are WAAYYYYY too big....you are just blowing 50% of the toxins right back into your room...you need a hepafilter fume extractor. id NEVER use this
It’s more to just move the fumes away. The only significant fumes are the flux. Nothing particularly toxic. So it’s plenty good enough for non production work.
buying it. you need to affiliate your channel bro! I'd have bought this thing off your link and you would have gotten some $$$ ;) What soldering iron you working with?
Yea I have to set that up! Thanks Stuart. I use a Weller Wes51 station. It’s served me well. If I were to upgrade I would buy the Hakko fx100. But that’s like $700plus with tips and such.
i will say this is probably the best option on the market. the filters are not high quality but compared to professional options targeted to the market, those are not much better. best bang for buck, hands down. if your heavy every day soldering this will get fumes away from lungs then you can pair with something that does whole area carbon filtration for better VOC capture. something like a true carbon filter air scrubber.
if you mount it on the wall like that, i would suggest making a little baffle just to keep whatever comes out the exhaust from coming back in your face.
I’m not sure if there is a data sheet on the unit or not. No visible smoke comes out of the back and even if there was, as long as you point it away from you the fumes would go away. The carbon filter gets covered in particulates so it’s certainly filtering. It functions the same as the Weller unit just with a tube.
just started soldering. Soldered for 10 min in front of an open window with no fan, now i feel asthmatic and am now experiencing sudden bouts of anxiety, which i didnt have before soldering. Seems I'm especially sensitive to the smoke, cuz i still feel like shit a day later. Man... and i was having fun too, now i'm not so sure about taking up this new hobby of mine. I'll get this kotto extractor or another like it and see if it'll help. Man I really do feel like shit right now.
I really enjoyed the fat tire within 20 seconds of the vid haha
Beverages at night during shop projects… sometimes, usually I forget it’s even there.

I need one for Taco Tuesday’s 😂💨
is there any way to test if any of the fumes make it out the back of the exhaust area? Or is there any data out there proving that nothing escapes?
