- When I tell you guys The Righteous Brothers - Unchained Melody is the most beautiful song I have ever heard, I am not exaggerating... Now I know this is a completely different style of music from what we usually listen to on the channel. You guys all know this is a Rock Reaction Channel but this was requested through to me with a donation so I had to check it out. I am so glad I did. It is so refreshing to hearing a song like Unchained Melody after hearing so many rock songs over these past months. The Righteous Brothers are now a group I am so interested in and I will definitely be listening to more of their stuff. To me Unchained Melody felt like a breath of fresh air!

@@markdecker6190 That is correct. Live orchestras for these live television performances were the standard in the 60s and early 70s.
auto tune did not exist, the others did and were used in movie musicals but was not accepted by promoters or audiences live. and even in the studio you had to sing like that.

This was my mom and dad's song. We played it at her funeral and dad got up to lean over and hold her while swaying as if like a last dance. You could hear tissues being pulled from boxes when he did that. He died 6 months later from a broken heart. RIP mom and dad.

This was the anthem of our service men in Vietnam for their wives and girlfriends hoping they’d still be there for them when..if…they made it home. He is called a counter tenor…every woman loves slow dancing to this with that someone special…just pure raw talent..no auto tune, lip syncing or gimmicks..

the Righteous Brother are the pioneers of "Blue-eyed Soul" genre. This genre had white musicians/songwriters/singers who had vocals, wrote music, and played instruments that capture the Soul music of Motown, Blues, Gospel, and Jazz. They sounded like the artists of the American Blacks and composed songs of Black people's music of the 50's, 60's & 70's earning them a category in music History as "Blue-Eyed Soul. The Righteous Brothers were the pioneers of that movement.
Blue eyed soul genre? Never heard of it! They ARE IT! Some, like Hall and Oats tried to cash in on their sound, but it's NOT a genre.
Hall and Oates never pretended to be soul.

You are exactly right. Most folks don't know how hard it was for guys like Elvis to get his songs played because they called it black music. I'm happy to give the black artists credit for the style if music because they deserve it.

Andy would be what they used to call a "crooner", ie "Moon River".
Sadly Bobby Hatfield died about 20 years ago. But Bill Medley (tall one deep voice) is still performing I think.

His voice is beautiful, and the range is incredible, but the thing that knocks me out is his breath control. He can keep those big long arpeggios going for an incredible amount of time.
Bobby was a countertenor. He had an unbelievable vocal range. He could have made a name for himself as an opera singer but his heart belonged to soul and rock and roll.
Bobby Hatfield is an operatic tenor, and his range extends up into the counter tenor range (where a man's voice is so high it sounds like a woman's voice). He is phenomenal. What makes the Righteous Brothers so amazing, though, is that Bill Medley is a Bass/Baritone. Their harmonies are like nothing we get to hear anymore. RIP, Bobby. Check out 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling' to hear them both singing.
I've been listening to this song since the 60s and it still can make me cry.
Bobby's voice cracked a few times because he was so nervous about his mom being in the audience. But he absolutely nailed it.
I think the cracks were intentional to give more feeling to the song!
Little known fact: the year before in August of 1964, they were an opening act for the Beatles on tour in the USA!! they got a record contract and left the tour. Bobby and Bill were on ture in 2003. in November they were to sing in Kalamazoo MI. just an hour from my house. Bobby didn't show on time to start thet show. They found him dead in is hotel room from an apparent heart attack at age 63. Bill is actually still alive. it is uncanny that This tape of Bobby still sends chills up and down the spine to young people, and melts the girls in their computer chairs.

I love the ending when he casually bites his lip like thinking "I killed it" or "damn I'm good". This song is featured in the movie "Ghost" with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore.
It was a nervous habit and more like thank heavens I didn't faint. Read somewhere he said just before he began he felt like he was going to faint. He was always nervous about performing.

Not many people have a voice of his quality though. Autotune gets criticized too often as it allows us to hear some singers that aren't as strong as others and without it we just wouldn't hear them, when in reality they are good singers. No, not top tare like this, but good nonetheless.

This cover of the song is the definitive version. Bobby just nails it. He was sick with a cold, too, at that, and still hit something like 93 different notes spot on! His parents were in the audience so he was nervous, to boot. I love the lip bite at the end like he knew he did it! What a vocal. I can't think of a better one. To hear more, you'll get a chance to see Bill Medley's deep vocals as counterpoint to Bobby's higher range. Bobby was a rare counter tenor. You've Lost that Loving Feeling is a good next one by them. :)

Probably one of the greatest love songs ever sung. It was covered by MANY, MANY singers....including Elvis, but none could touch Bobby. That's why it's the one they used in "Ghost". Blue-eyed soul at it's finest.

I grew up with this music and it was wonderful to see someone as young as you, from a very different musical tradition, reacting to this. Bobby had a cold that night and was worried he wouldn’t hit the high note and yet he did so effortlessly. His mum was in the audience, adding an extra layer of apprehension. This was the slow dance before the drafted soldiers got shipped out to Vietnam. Gives the song much more meaning when you know that.
