      This was a great video. I do wish we could have heard King William speak a little bit. That being said, I just made a contribution to One Reef. I don't have a lot of money so it wasn't a huge donation or anything, but thanks for alerting me and everyone else to this organization. Maybe one day I will meet Willy myself. As someone with a masters degree in sociology, thinking about the problems Ant Atoll is trying to tackle is fascinating and daunting all at once.

      I lived in Costa Rica for 9 years and loved it. I hated coming back, but mom needed me. That place looks even better. It's like some of the little towns in Central America but more remote. Living there is not easy I'm sure. But I would probably want to stay forever if I went.

    I lived on Pohnpei in the early 1990's for about 5 years - and was fortunate to visit Ahnd (Ant) atoll a few times - including an overnight visit. Dolphins escorted us through the channel and into the lagoon, and we tasted some of that amazingly sweet coconut crab. An experience I will never forget!

    Hi Evan. I have been a fan of Rare Earth for a long time. Some of the videos stuck with me deep... This one made me realize I may be a bigger fraction of your viewership, than any other - speaking of channels I care about. So I joined your patreon (initials V.H.), saw the wonderfull "postcard" option, then chickened out a little and set a limit to 2 donations/month... I will be absolutely thrilled, getting a postcard from you, if only from time to time. Wish you all the best and Merry Christmas.

      What's wrong with Kauai?

    • @angelinvocon
      @angelinvocon Рік тому

      @@westrim No one said Kauai anything. I said Hawaii. You can easily look at a map and see there are several islands. And I did not say there was anything wrong with them. I pointed out that these are uncommon, less developed and therefore better. Have you ever gone anywhere?

    • @westrim
      @westrim Рік тому +2

      @@angelinvocon I said Kauai, and what process of thinking leads you to think that a person who knows about Kauai doesn't have at least general knowledge about the major islands of the Hawaiian island chain? It's hard to square your saying that "there's nothing wrong with them (presumably the Hawaiian islands)" when you smack talk them.
      So I repeat my question, in greater detail; you speak of all the concrete in Hawaii, but Kauai still has a fairly rural feeling outside of Lihue. So what's wrong with Kauai? Just the fact that there ARE more than a handful of people living there? Nevermind that it's dozens of times bigger than Ant, of course. Hawaii has dozens of those islands too, they're just not open for general habitation. It also has other minor islands like Ni'ihau, with a grand total population of around 100.
      If you're just lamenting that you're not rich/lucky/timely enough to end up on a sparsely populated island or even one of your very own, well, you're in good company. But crapping on the Hawaiian islands without discretion as a "concrete monster" well, that's just unfounded, rude, and not really fair outside of Oahu (and maybe Maui, but I never went there, and concrete doesn't fit my impression of the island).

    • @angelinvocon
      @angelinvocon Рік тому

      @@westrim I was raised in Hawaii and you are a troll, lol. Oh, for your information Kauai is the island of the Elelule, or royalty and a sacred place. Take your ignorance and go away.

    I'm going to defend my current King and remind people Charles III is famously an avid gardener & dedicated farmer who did a lot of the actual, physical work to build up the gardens of his estates, & does the work of actually running his farms - & put out his own wealth to build thousands of new, traditionally built homes in the royal Duchy of Lancaster. So he also acts the good King in some ways, like this King.
    So I'm also going to applaud this King, this Rosha: He's ruling the right way, the true kingly way, looking forward for his people. I can only wish him and his the best of luck.

    Thank you so much for all of the great content, its one of the few things that gives me a little bit of faith in humanity!
    How does one manage to get to Ant? I would love to be able to go and help. I know others who would love to too!

    The most humble monarch I've ever heard of.
    William Hawley's story reminds me of the Afro-Bolivian Monarchy, a ceremonial chiefdom officially recognized by the Bolivian government in 2008, and led by King Julio Pinedo. This dynasty arose among imported enslaved African people who were put to work in Bolivia. One of these slaves was recognized by his fellow enslaved people as belonging to one of the African royal families, and upon emancipation they rallied around him as a leader in his community. Today King Julio runs a small store and farm in his village of Muruata, deep in the Andean jungles of Bolivia. Though he lacks any official power, he serves as an ambassador of the historically marginalized Afro-Bolivian culture. The Afro-Bolvian Monarchy is the the only remaining monarchy within the Americas.
    If your journeys ever take you to Bolivia, @RareEarthSeries , you should definitely check it out!
