South Sister, at 3145 Meters is the highest piece of land in my local area, but that’s probably too much, considering there’s a glacier up there, so I’ll have to find something more mediocre.
I have been giving guided tours to Leidschendam Mountain to foreign guests for the last thirty years, and yes, that is actually true. I have had visitors from Sweden, Japan, America and Australia. However, the visitors tend to be underwhelmed. It is an old dune remnant in Zijdepark, next to the Leidschendam shopping center. It is 2 meter high, and it is the only place in Leidschendam that is significantly above sea level. That is, if one considers 2 meter significant.

So you need the highest point within a 20 km radius :o) Better take 5-10 km, as you should be able to get to it unmotorised. I might walk to the aptly called Hoogte Honderdplein/Place Altitude Cent, it's a whopping 70 m height difference from where I live, but only 3 or so I'm.

I did a trail run on my county’s largest mountain yesterday. There’s a spectacular view on one side, but that’s not the highest point; the top is actually in some guy’s backyard. I’m going to take a picture of the fence!

Does 30km count as local? Is it okay to take the train for half of the ride? (until 1500m/2080m) the first few hundred meter are just boring gravel road.

I'm out cycling and running every weekend anyway, so I might as well go to Katwijk 🇳🇱 next weekend and get onto the highest point in Zuid Holland (again). It has a pretty good view as well.
I'm tempted, just had a look and found where the highest point is. just depends on the weather at the moment lol, back in England had all this lovely weather in May and now it is rubbish summer weather!
I live in the Black Forest, so I have a lot to choose from. But the absolute nearest and perfectly climbable by foot would be the Geigerskopf (435m), so expect a nice picture from there!
Soo the highest point in Wisconsin,USA is a place called Timm's Hill. It's relatively flat to the surrounding area,so it definitely fits the mediocre category. You don't actually climb or even walk up it as it is in the middle of a forest. You drive to a park and the only thing you see is trees. If you want to see anything you can climb a lookout station that was once used to spot forest fires.
Darn, didn't see this until July. The nearest high thing I can walk to is... The shopping mall. Topomap calls it 43m, which I doubt because the river is supposedly 50m asl, and topomap says the river is 13m. But it is the highest point for 2km from here. 4km away is a new overpass at 67m :) and 33km away is 1000m, but not walking distance..
@tim: The map appears to indicate trees as the highest point, so i think i'll go to the wooldse veen, which is apparently the highest natural point here in Winterswijk.
The highest point within the central area of my city is 73ft (25m?) above sea level...and only about 200m from the river that is at 20ft (6-7m) above sea level. Just a few kilometres out of town are some areas that are more than 20m below sea level...it doesn’t get more mediocre than the fens of England...
If it's too flat can we MAKE our own mountain? Thinking get a couple of bin bags, fill with soil, climb (after lots of practice, maybe take a course in mountaineering first, just to be safe) and on reaching the summit, plant a flag? Bit worried that oxygen will be required two bin-bags high.
Are we talking natural elevations only? Cause one of the highest in my area (Berlin) is made from the rubble left over from the buildings destroyed in the area during the last war, which was subsequently covered with soil and turned into a park. There's actually a few of these around here, some of them additionally on top of (what used to be) large above-ground bunkers. Related to this, there's also the question of former landfill sites. So, do these count?
Normally I'd say natural only, but the rubble mounds actually sound kind of interesting. So sure, if you'd like to climb one of those, go for it - I'm not going to disqualify you :)
Hmm. According to that map, the highest point near me is part of the water surface of Millwall dock. Not all of it, just one part, which, of course, is around six feet lower than the surrounding land.
Competitive MMC could be an Olympic discipline. Points awarded for best meandering, pointing out where your house sort-of-is and carrying the most inapppropriate bit of mountaineering kit there-and-back-again.
I live in a city built on a swamp next to the sea. Literally. The highest point within 5km is ~10 metres (~60 feet) above sea level. Climbing to the highest local point might mean walking to the street corner because the roads are slightly built up ~20 cm to help with drainage. I might need to take rope and other climbing equipment.
I've just had a look at topographical map and... it appears we live at the highest spot for about 5 miles around us. You can expect a picture from our back garden. Maybe stood on a mound of earth
Aha! I posted an event for a local hiking Meetup group much like this -- called it "local highpointing". We sent everyone out, starting from wherever they were, and had them tag the highest place they could get to under their own steam. Suggested trick to make it more "interesting": At any turn, take the direction that goes steepest upward. At a local maximum, where all paths lead downward, reverse the scheme, and follow the most steep downward path. Avoid going the same way twice. If that doesn't hit the actual local highpoint, after a while, just head straight there.
I looked at Alberta on the map he linked. It seems to be quite hilly to me. - A Dutch person. (The entire area where I live is marked as between -2 and 2 metres.
What counts as a mountain? Do bridges count? Because otherwise I can create the highest mountain in my area by stacking some bags of dirt in my backyard. Or perhaps that one tile in the pavement that sticks out at an angle could be the highest point, especially with the "no motorized vehicles" rule.
Is there a restriction to the size of the area in which it is the highest point? As in, could I for instance submit a hill in my local park as the highest point in that park? Or are we talking like highest point in a certain, larger area than a park, like highest point in Wakefield and such?
The highest point in your local park is absolutely valid. If you want to go bigger and attempt the highest point in Wakefield then that's fine too. Entirely up to you!
Living in north Derbyshire - is not so difficult, but which one hill? :D Closes one in centre of my village has 528ft. But 5 miles away 929ft, or 10 miles away 974ft (all easy to reach with bicycle) So many to choose.
If the highest point in your local area is on the boundary of the area, and not a summit because it keeps sloping up outside of the area, should one go there? Or does it need to be a summit? And if so, can that summit lie exactly on the border, or should one use the highest summit strictly inside one's local area?
Ummm... the Dallas river valley has two ridges of highest ground, which are where we put all the TV antennas on major roads. And actually climbing the rock Ft Worth is built on would be impressive, and probably illegal.
Basically, The Highest Point in my local area are the garbage hills and they are also the naturally highest elevation, so, never mind, I am better at home.
From the posts Tim has made about this before, I can gather that the challenge involves getting to the highest point you can reach without using motorized vehicles. So the limit should just be how far you can go.
There's a beautiful mountain with a great view about half an hour of walk from here that I can actually see from my window... but I'm a little afraid to go since the mountain has quite a few bears on it. May have to sit this out.
So... can I drive to the carpark thats half way up it and then climb? or do I have to climb from the bottom? does it count if its local but in another parish/county?
Man, my area is depressingly flat. And the highest points are as far as I can tell either in an impenetrable forest, or someones private garden. And to be clear, we are talking about places being maybe 10 feet higher than the surrounding area. With a very mild slope. I think standing on the highest point in our garden might be more impressive.
I just checked, where I live technically it doesnt state that it's the highest point anywhere on the spot itself, is that an issue? I was about to do a long nightride though, so I can probably get there.
Don't go to topographicmap .com, go to topographic-map.com. The first one sends you to a domain squatter page. The link in the description is missing the so it's not clickable.
so that would make it easy. maybe a speed bump is the highest point. en-gb.topographic-map.com/maps/iu/United-Kingdom/ with this map you can see what the highest point is with in your area. mine is a 27 meter sea barrier
I'll be going to the highest natural point in my borough, at a mighty 35m. it's a lot closer than going to London's highest point and although technically not the highest bit of land, it is the natural highpoint rather than a mound built by rich people
Are we allowed to use transportation to the base of the highest hill in the area? Also, I don't live in a city - I'm on unincorporated land. What's my limit, size-wise?
Okay .... here's what I have to do: find the highest local maxima inside the boundaries of the city, where there is not a higher point immediately outside the boundaries. In other words, the most mediocre mountain whose peak lies inside the boundaries of the city. It's going to be right behind this guy's house: www.openstreetmap.org/way/740869719#map=18/42.10207/-76.81257
There are hundreds (maybe thousands) of ham radio operators who are into this sort of thing, through the "Summits On The Air" program. They have in-depth lists and maps of local high points. It's basically a contest to see how many mediocre mountains you can make radio contacts from/to. But viewers here could use their resources to locate high points near them. www.sota.org.uk/
Shame I missed this. The highest point in my city is less than a mile from my house. Of course, it's a rise of only about 80 feet, but it's something, at least.
In Ireland, we're now allowed to go anywhere within our county (or at most 20km if crossing county boundaries). I live in the flattest county in the country. Its not the lowest county, but it has a prominence of a whopping 50m. Fairly sure it won't be the most mediocre but in a fairly hilly country it'll be comparatively pathetic
Damn! I missed out. I wanted to join! I live in Belgium (between the highest point of Holland and the vennbahn) so the signal de Botrange is not far :( Well, I'll have to wait for the next mediocre task
The highest mountain near me is an old man made dirt pile with some grass on it. a total of 10 meters in height while the lowest point near me is -6.5 meters.
As far as I can tell the nearest highest point I can walk to is quite near, very doable, but looks to be... a footpath between a small wood and the M5 motorway... a whopping 290ft above sea level! Might save it for the Pathetic Promontory challenge...
I checked into this a while ago. Excluding the actual mountain 30 minutes from her I live at the top of the highest mountain in my local area. Technically I go up a bit when I take out the trash.

I was going to enter, but the highest point I could get to where I lived was the back of the factory I worked at... extra depressing.
Since the highest point near me is the top of a landfill, I think I'll skip it.
You think you'll *skip* it?
Basically, The Highest Point in my local area are the garbage hills and they are also the naturally highest elevation, so, never mind, I am better at home.
hey Tim, what defines "local area"? I got a fun "mountain" (more of a hill tbh) in mind but to be fair there is a bigger one a few more miles away.
I wonder this too. There is a really nice Butte about 20 min away, or do I need to stay in town?
@@marcusdire8057 Depends if you're willing to walk there. 20 mins walk isn't that far so seems fine imo
From the posts Tim has made about this before, I can gather that the challenge involves getting to the highest point you can reach without using motorized vehicles. So the limit should just be how far you can go.
@@terilyte3152 20 min drive to the base. SO probably not LOCAL "local area" as I'm looking deeper into it.
@@marcusdire8057 if the drive is on a non powered object. (a skate board is allowed)
Consider it done! I'll be off up the hill behind my house this weekend.
I went on a bike ride to the highest local point today. It was a beautiful day and the birdsong was wonderful.
So turns out I live on top of the highest mediocre mountain in my local area (without travelling 100km).
Now what? Just go outside and take a picture?
There's a beautiful mountain with a great view about half an hour of walk from here that I can actually see from my window... but I'm a little afraid to go since the mountain has quite a few bears on it. May have to sit this out.
Awww go on, live a little...What's a few bears when COVID-19 could take you out at any time.
So... can I drive to the carpark thats half way up it and then climb? or do I have to climb from the bottom? does it count if its local but in another parish/county?
Instructions unclear. Climbed Everest
Cheers - I've edited the description
@@TheTimTraveller Great, and thanks for the great entertainment you've been providing!
We’re excited as a family of grown ups to do this may be a very mediocre mountain indeed but this is going to be great
I watched this in my lounge, 1m *below* sealevel on the North Sea coast of the UK. Not many lumpy bits around here!
so that would make it easy. maybe a speed bump is the highest point.
en-gb.topographic-map.com/maps/iu/United-Kingdom/
with this map you can see what the highest point is with in your area.
mine is a 27 meter sea barrier
I'll be going to the highest natural point in my borough, at a mighty 35m. it's a lot closer than going to London's highest point and although technically not the highest bit of land, it is the natural highpoint rather than a mound built by rich people
Are we allowed to use transportation to the base of the highest hill in the area?
Also, I don't live in a city - I'm on unincorporated land. What's my limit, size-wise?
you are allowed to get there as long as the movement to it. is with pure muscle power driven. that will lower the area you can travel to by purpose.
Problem...There's a pub between me and our 6m high point.
But what if the borders of my city run along the sides of hills, so there is no "peak" to speak of?
Okay .... here's what I have to do: find the highest local maxima inside the boundaries of the city, where there is not a higher point immediately outside the boundaries.

Shame I missed this. The highest point in my city is less than a mile from my house. Of course, it's a rise of only about 80 feet, but it's something, at least.
Hmm... looks like my own house is the highest point near me. That's convenient.
Lol same.
I live in Belgium (between the highest point of Holland and the vennbahn) so the signal de Botrange is not far :(
Well, I'll have to wait for the next mediocre task
What if the highest peak in my local area is a garbage dump heap?
The highest mountain near me is an old man made dirt pile with some grass on it. a total of 10 meters in height while the lowest point near me is -6.5 meters.
As far as I can tell the nearest highest point I can walk to is quite near, very doable, but looks to be... a footpath between a small wood and the M5 motorway... a whopping 290ft above sea level! Might save it for the Pathetic Promontory challenge...
Hehe great! I've changed places since the last video, but there's an even mediocre-r mountain (hill) here, in Patras!
I'm from the Philippines, and its OK now to go around the country. If you have a car that is, as public transport is still off.
does the highest point have to be natural or man made? as the highest point in my town is 23 meters (a water barrier)
Go for the natural one if you can
I checked into this a while ago. Excluding the actual mountain 30 minutes from her I live at the top of the highest mountain in my local area. Technically I go up a bit when I take out the trash.
The closest highest point I can get to on foot is outside my front door because I caught The Lurgy in March and I can't seem to shake it.
