Rear hatch won't open on a 2017 Ford Escape Titanium. How to replace the lock actuator.

- The rear hatch on our 2017 Ford Escape-Titanium-release began showing signs of failure by not opening with key fob, foot sensor, latch button on door or dash hatch button. (see symptoms here • Rear hatch problem on ... ) It got frustratingly worse until it would take 5 to 10 minutes of trying and trying before it would finally open. I started searching for a solution and could not find much where it pertained to the 2017 Escape model and my specific symptoms. I was about 75% sure the lock actuator had gone bad. I asked a friend that works for Ford for the part number and began searching. I could not find this part on Amazon and had to order it from a OEM site. We are in Italy and nobody would ship via USPS to an APO/FPO, so we had to send it to a relative in the US and had them resend by USPS.
I then found the video by @FordBossMe, where he performed a similar replacement on a 2019 Ford Edge. • 2019 Ford Edge Titaniu... His video was inspirational and gave me the confidence that it wasn't that difficult to replace. Slight difference in tools required between his and my video. All together it probably took 15 minutes and under $200 to replace it. ($152 part, and $30 in shipping)
It seems that replacing this lock actuator, has fixed our problem.
OEM Part number: GJ5Z-7443150-B
Purchased at: www.fordpartsa...
Tools Needed:
Small flat tip screwdriver
1- T20 Torx Wrench
1- T40 Torx Wrench
Best of luck, thanks for watching. Hit that thumbs up.
This video was sooo helpful!! Thank you so much for making it. My Escape has a manual tail gate, so different part, but all the steps were the same. Saved myself about $200! Grateful.
Glad it helped!
Best video ever! Took me forever to get the trunk open, but once it did this video was step by step everything I needed! Called my local ford dealership and picked up the part you gave the same day. Thank you!
Glad it helped!
Nice job! Give yourself a raise. I really appreciate you including the part number! Sweet!
Thanks! Will do!
Thanks for this video. I had the same problem on my 2017 Titanium. I struggled a few minute’s though trying to get the motor/actuator out from the door. The hole was too small. Then I realized there was a bar going across the top of the motor, held by two 10mm nuts. Removed that, then the motor came right out. Replaced the unit and now my lift gate works like new. This video was a great help. Thanks again!
Glad it worked and saved you the dealership expense.
Yes had same issue with bar going across, wondering if this bar is only in the Sports edition. because some 2017 Titaniums' don't have it.Strange.
Hey man, you helped me out so much! Took me about 5 min, super simple, very clear instructions. Your awesome, have a great day!
Glad it helped!
Thanks to both of you. I may be changing mine soon. My door sometimes wont latch after it comes down.
I just found out earlier today I have the same problem on my 2017 Ford Escape. Thanks for this great video. Will save me a lot of money vs. taking it to the Dealership. Great job. 👍
Literally took 15 minutes to replace. Ordered on Amazon for about $50. Works great! Will update if things change. Thanks for the video!!
Fantastic!
¿Can you share the link or model on Amazon?
Thanks so much for this video! I have the same exact problem, and while I originally thought it might be a bad fuse, the fact that I could hear it "click" but not open, lead me to thinking it was something else. I still don't get why they didn't put a manual latch on there despite it being the Titanium trim. I was always afraid to put something in the back for fear of not being about get it open. This a huge help.
Glad it was of help.
Thanks very much for your video. I was able to do mine in less than 10 minutes since you made this video and shared it. You are a hero!
Scott. Great job. Glad we were able to help.
Sir. I just want to thank you for this video. I have a 2017 Escape Titanium with the same problem. I just received the part from Ford America and installed it myself. It took longer than 12 minutes. Ha ha. But that was because I had the same issue as the previous comment. The rest was a breeze. Your video gave me the confidence to do it myself and saved over $300 compared to the dealer. Thanks again for taking the time to do this video. Kudos to you. 👏👏
Glad it helped.
i can’t find what he is opening up. it all looks like 1 piece. can you help me find it?
@@crystalrollefson5748 Have you removed the panel so you can get to the actuator?
@@loushaver635 do i remove the entire thing? i don’t see anything. i’m at work now so i’ll send a photo if i can of what i see. is it the entire panel on the interrior side? i don’t see anywhere to even use tools
@@crystalrollefson5748 the video shows the pieces that need to come out. There are a few screws first, then you have to pull the entire door panel off. It may seem a bit daunting, but there is another video that you can watch too if you want to see another perspective. It is in the description above. You got this...
Great video! Now I have the confidence i need to change my daughters.
I can’t thank you enough for this, fixed my 2017 Escape SE for just the cost of the part.
Slight variations on mine: I had to remove an additional bracket that was bracing the hole where the old actuator assembly needed to be pulled out. Easy fix with a socket wrench.
Then, after finishing everything up, my liftgate closed and latched perfectly, but would NOT open back up…just a click and no movement whatsoever. Disconnecting the car battery for 30 seconds fixed this. It seems this reset the system that determines whether the liftgate is open/closed/obstructed. Been working ever since.
Excellent video, thanks for thinking of others.
Glad to be of help. Based on the comments, it seems like this is a major issue for Ford. Also a major money maker for their service department. I have to give all the credit to @FordBossMe for his video. He inspired me to fix mine.
That "Son of a gun" at fhe end is exactly my reaction anytime I try to fix something on a car and it works!
This Helped me fix mine. Thanks a million!!
You're welcome! Glad it helped.
I have this problem in my 2017 escape, ford dealer wants +$800 to fix it. Unbelievable. I’ve been looking for a video on this for a while. Thanks for posting it; you saved me hundreds of dollars!
Glad it helped. Dealership prices are crazy.
@@loushaver635 fixed and works perfectly. Fyi, my antivirus was giving me all kinds of warnings at the link you posted to order parts. So I ordered directly from Ford. Also I had a crossbar on the frame opening you didn’t have, it was easily removed but I had to take if off to get the assembly out. Other than that it went exactly how you showed in your video and took me about 20min.
Hello from Canada !. I just replaced mine and it now works like a charm. Thank you so much for posting this.
Also, credit where it's due. the 'clips' did not break but, came off with a disturbing amount of noise, but, no breaks! That's always my worry.
I used my new 'body panel' tools (canadian tire 23 C$). The new part fit easily and perfect.
The screws holding the handle are a T20 torx. the bolts for the actuator are t40's ( Ford Escape SEL 2018).
Thanks again !!
I have to give all the credit to
@FordBossMe he inspired me to tackle the job. Glad you got it fixed. Cheers.
My wife’s is doing the same thing. Thanks for the video!
Glad to help
Great video- knocked it out in 10 minutes thanks!
Glad it helped. It wasn’t as hard as I expected it to be.
Greetings from FL, fixed mine today, took 40 minutes. In mine an additional bar needed to be loosened that prevented the actuator from moving, but was no problem in the end just extra step. Nice work! Still not convinced it will last long. Seems like a frequent problem.
Glad it helped
Thanks for the help. I have a 2018 Escape that’s doing the same thing now
Did you get it repaired?
This helped greatly. Thank you.
You're welcome!
Amazing video
Thanks!
It was all my lovely camera lady. She is the best.
Legit homie! Thank you for your service too
Thank you. I hope it was of some help to you.
COOL thanks
thank you!! this video helped my dad & i change mine!!
Glad it helped. It was a lot easier than I anticipated it to be.
Thank you dealership just quoted me $475 to replace this
You are welcome. Let me know how it turns out.
thank u good sir, i have the same issues, sometimes it works but mostly not.
Thanks for the video. I'm going to be attempting this today. Wish we luck!
You got this. Let me know how it comes out.
@@loushaver635 My wife and I did it together, and the lift gate is now working perfectly! We followed your video exactly, although it took us a bit more than 12 minutes. Thanks again!!
@@kbeynon79 glad to hear it worked for you. You probably saved yourself $1000 at the dealer.
Anybody know how to get the liftgate open when it’s stuck shut. I’ve tried every way possible to get it open just so I can replace the actuator…
Curious how well this is still working? I appreciate your video and I need to make this repair just curious if it is still working well.
Last I knew, it was still working. We sold the car when we left Italy.
Thanks have this problem on Lincoln mkx 2017. Thought was a module but dealer says is that latch. Is at dealer waiting on part and estimated at 600. Thanks for video.
Did you get it repaired?
My 2017 escape the hatch isn’t opening sometimes so we have to push the button on the dashboard to open it. It’s not a titanium edition so it is manual open. Would I need to replace the actuator for the same problem?
I am not a ford technician, however... if the button on the dash activates the opener, I would surmise it must be an electrical component. If that is the case, it may possibly be the actuator. I'd do some more internet research or ask @FordBossMe He is way more knowledgable than I am.
My escape doesn't have the gate release on the fob so I'm trying to get it open and it has no release on the dash I'm screwed so far but the door opens sometimes is there a release in the dash I don't see one
I am not sure. Check out the FordBossMe channel
Thanks a lot. Where do I send the 12 pack?
Glad it helped.
I'm assuming this is the same process for the models that do not have any of the fancy opening options?
Hi Lou, I have exactly the same problem with my 2017 Ford escape, titanium, except I cannot get the door to actually open. How did you open the door in order to replace the actuator? Thank you!
Mine was acting intermittently. It would not open, then miraculously it would open. I have been told to disconnect the neutral on battery wait 10 minutes then reconnect it. That may help. Others that say there is some kind of way to do it from the inside. You may also ask @fordbossMe and see if he has any idea. He is very sharp on this stuff.
Great vid but my rear hatch is closed and now won't open. I replace the actuator and the remote closed the hatch and that was it. Won't open. Only clicks when using the remote, the hatch button or the dash switch.
I believe there is a comment below on how to open it when it is latched closed. I didn’t have that issue. Mine wouldn’t open and kept getting worse and worse. Once I changed the actuator it resolved the problem.
Disconnect the car battery for 30 seconds. I had the same problem after replacing…one good close, and then just a click when trying to open. Disconnecting the battery seemed to reset the system that checks whether the liftgate is open/closed/obstructed.
@@andrewh07 thank you!! this worked for me
Very good, I have the same problem. Can you tell me. Where you bought the part. Please

How do I get it open? Ever since I bought the part, my hatch won't open at all
I’m in the same situation. Did you figure it out
Hello.
Can you describe exactly what symptoms you had?
I have a 2018 Escape and sometimes I can't open the trunk. None of the buttons work. Sometimes, after pressing the flap, it behaves as if the lock wanted to tighten the flap, making a slight movement. Sometimes no traffic. It's happening more and more often. So I'm wondering if it's the lock's fault.
It sounds like your symptoms are similar to mine. Buttons would not work or work intermittently. When the button was pushed, the liftgate would act like it was latching and slightly close, but not open up. Then it would mysteriously open. It got progressively worse. Hope that was of some help. I have another video of it acting up. ua-cam.com/users/shortsUTatEmxRePc
Thanks for the info and the second video. Exactly the same is happening to me. The corner moves slightly or not at all. Maybe tomorrow I will replace the lock I bought in China, see how it works.
My ford dealer is trying to tell me this isnt covered under premium care warranty. Gonna fight it. If not ill be replacing it myself
I hope they do it for you. But if they don’t, it isn’t that hard.
Where did you place the order

If it won't open how did you get it to open to change anything???
I am not sure. There may be another video out there that explains that.
Mine works intermittently and it's so damn frustrating. I think you just need to keep trying a few times with engine off/on then try to open again etc until it opens.
@@JoyceMajanil Ours started like that. We tried removing the fuse, unhooking the battery, engine off, engine on, using the fob, using the button on the dash, the door latch button, the foot sensor. It kept getting worse and worse. Since we changed the actuator two weeks ago, it has worked every time.
@@loushaver635 I'm glad it worked for you! I just ordered the part and hopefully, it'll be a permanent fix. I spent about 15mins at the hospital yesterday trying to get the damn thing open.
My wife’s 2017 Ford Escape same problem. Thanks for the video, really appreciate it. Seems easy enough except the hassle snapping that cover back on. I can already tell it’s going to take me twice as long as you did, LOL. But I’m sure after a few beers and curse words I’ll eventually get it. Thanks again!
so i decided to take the whole latch assembly apart, took a T20 and theres 3 little clippy things that hold the worm gear assembly together. ALL PLASTIC BULLSHIT. anyway. gears and everything internal looked good still had plenty of grease. but now that i put it all together its working like new with 0 issues. im thinking one of the times we had something in the door jam, the worm gear worked over time to force the rear hatch closed and maybe the worm gear and gears got misaligned. so sometimes the door would work, some times it wouldnt, sometimes it would work but not latch on close.
"Rear hatch won't open on a ..." But the hatch is OPEN in the video.
Use landscape please
Bill, if I could figure out how to change it, I would.
@@loushaver635 when starting to video, have the phone in landscape already. If you have it in portrait, start the video and then turn the phone, it'll stay in portrait.
I don't think once the video is made it can be changed but I could be wrong.
@@billmalec lesson learned. Next time I’ll do landscape.
Very nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
Well seems like a pretty consistent problem because mine is being a POS too!!! I had to slam the door down 4 times before it would realize it was shut and latch. Just kept popping back up 🫥
