Purely outstanding.....the orchestral backup arrangement was flawless....with a killer brass section that warmly enveloped La La Brooks in this timeless performance .
I appreciate the history and emotions attached to one's life that this song may remind them of but her heavily stylistic exuberance and the lack of feeling from the background singers render this incantation devoid of the excitement and raw sexuality of its original, and by a long shot.
I think her voice has improved with age. In any era very talented and beautiful lady. When she did this song on Letterman they had the violins which really enhances the song.
Well, yes, there's truth in what you wrote and, as older now than she was, I think she looks better now! :) Fact is, though, it's rare that later interpretations of the original songs, even by the same artist(s) are as good as the original. Of course, the original probably also had a million dollar budget, professional editing, incredible production and more and that's another reason that comparisons aren't fair but, well, I just love the original...as it was. To each their own....
There is another video on UA-cam of her singing it like she used to. She probably normally sings it like she used to, but in this particular video, she decided to sing it ever so slightly differently. Still her voice is very recognizable and when you watch this video, you know for certain that this is the singer who sang the original version and that is enough for me. I am just happy that she still has that great voice all these years later. So if she wants to sing it differently, I forgive her
La la I wish I knew you, you shine with your Magnetic Personality voice and unbelievable moves, you're a shining star. I love you. You probably get that a lot, lol!
@sixtiesforever1966 - As a musical professional myself no there is no copyright infringement on this song if sung by her or anyone else. The fact that she can be compensated for it is clear because she was originally in the group AND the lead singer of that group. Copyright infringement is soley on the basis of someone other than the author taking 'credit' for something that is not there's. She's part of the author since she penned the style of this song while being with the Crystals.
@sixtiesforever1966 She may have been born on June 20th but regardless what Wikipedia states that could hardly be right. Da Doo Run Run was recorded at the beginning of 1963, when she would have been 15. "Girl Group" yeah, but....
@jt123egypte I Posted Another "comment" about LaLa. I Am Just "amazed" How She Struts Her Beautiful Self around the "Stage" like an 18yr. Old. LaLa is a Beautiful Lady, Inside & Outside! I Have the Crystalls 45's- Worn Out!
Beyonce ain't got nothing on this fine woman. La La is the best female singer of the girl groups of the 60's and has a personality that is second to none.
Give her a break. She is much older now than she was then. Her voice is bound to be different and she is probably bored of singing it the same way every time. God only knows how many times she has been asked to sing this. There are other videos on UA-cam of her singing it closer to the original. But this one has gotten more views than those ones, so obviously she must be doing something right in this video.I'll be honest, I like the fact that she is singing it differently. It shows her talent.
Hi lazurm....This is La La Brooks. I wish to explain that when you do a song as a child of 15 years old, and when you're singing it in a studio with a producer who's like a teacher in school, you tend to follow the instructions you're being given. I didn't do the song with feeling as it wasn't coming from my heart. I couldn't even comprehend the words because I was so young. I sang it with innocence because I was innocent and that's what you hear. I'm much older now and my brain is different.
I think you may have misunderstood my original comment. I actually felt that the original had more exuberance and raw energy than did the heavily stylistic, later, live version. I also realize that the live version didn't have the benefits of a studio and million dollar production. Still, the original, recorded version hasn't been even close to any other version I've ever heard in terms of excitement, energy, power, vocal quality and more. And it's understandable that this is so, agreed.
@Eddieb715 She's well over 65 in this clip, Eddie. Age inevitably takes a toll. We probably wouldn't want to endure attempts at high notes at this point.
I know it's a long time ago but do you recall the kind of instructions you were given at the original recording session of this song? How many takes were made? Were voices recorded individually and later combined? Were you amazed at the final result? Did your recorded voice sound better to you than any live singing you've done of this song since, in your opinion of course? Were other lead singers attempted prior to production and, if so, who were they and did you hear their versions too?
HOOCHIE DANCING?!!!!! Dude you are a buzzkill! Sexy, yes.Not sleazy.Bear in mind that she's over 60 years old in this performance. I doubt that BYONCE, GAGA or even MADONNA will have her looks, stage presence or voice at that age. I've seen her live several times & am anxious to see her again.
Of course, now that my curiosity was aroused I searched UA-cam and found what, so far, was the closest rendition of the original. Pretty close I'd say, even if the sound quality wasn't great, found at (remember to put the UA-cam prefix in before this) watch?v=_CR7EL_102M
@jt123egypte I'm LaLa's AGE!! I don't move like LaLa, Freda Payne, Chuck Berry, Thelma Houston, or any of these "Legendary" performers! I THINK IT'S GREAT THAT THEY STILL "MOVE AND SHAKE IT" OK?
I love this song....but wish she'd sing it like she used to. She's adding all the aa's at the end of each word. Like "I whispered I love you aa. Lots of the old time singers do this ....when the public wants to hear it like it was orginally done. It sounds like she's bored with the original verson maybe? Still love her voice though. Foxy too.
Did you not read Lala's own explanation here in the comments section. Scroll down the comments and Lala explains why she sings it this way. She says that when she sang the original she was 15 years old and had no idea what the song really meant and so she never sang it from her soul, she sang the way she was told to sing and so it did not come straight from her heart. You are entitled to dislike this, but IT IS A FACT that the original was manufactured AND DID NOT COME FROM HER HEART.
Also your comments aren't entirely constructive because you used the word "hoochie" and there was no need for that. You also criticised her for dancing and there was no need for that either. Maybe she isn't a miserable person and likes to have fun. Life is short so you might as well enjoy yourself especially at her age.
She's great, and has to be her , it looked like she wanted to dance like that gyrate in 1961, again though she's great and the evil that he did aside, she should of had Phil Spector and her 1961 handlers and stylist ,help choreograph her performance here , the look is okay but to casual for her stature ,like a long elegsant dress,of being from one of the greatest girl groups, having one of the greatest songs and as much as possible, the original band members should of been there to,but she's great.

@tahoefella Totally agree. The unneeded mannerisms detract from the song
