    3 Quick observations. 1) I'm lucky enough to set my own schedule, and I've lately been leaving Friday afternoon (GMT) open for some reason. 2) Regardless of the subject (and my apparent previous interest in it) I ALWAYS learn something (and that's from a 30 year pro guitarist and live/studio engineer.) Most importantly, 3) I always find myself pausing part way in to go set up my rig and try out something (in other words, you're inspiring me to play and experiment!) No greater compliment! Keep up the amazing work!

Personally Anasound & Rattler was a huge sound, it was epic. 60 Cycle Hum Pretty sure John Mayer has used a standalone fender reverb tank before. I'm personally bummed that they didn't get an oceans 11 for this video because it's super malleable with it's secondary settings. instead you get to hear the supernatural which sounds good but imo the oceans sounds better. would've liked to have heard it against the source audio as well as the Wampler and CBA.

Once they added gain, they got more into the gain than the reverb.. These guys should listen to your "drippy" series. I found this vid very disappointing. The Element with the big tank during the intro is the kind of reverb sound I live for. Dan's intro made me feel like I was 19 again, listening to This Mortal Coil's "Filigree and Shadow" for the first time, way back in 1988, as a sophomore at uni. Very 4AD stuff, there, makes me swoon and go all twee.

I spent forever messing with Choruses, Univibes, Phasers and Delays looking for something that would give me a fuller sound, once I got a good reverb (Keeley Caverns) I was amazed at how versatile it could be. I'd love to see a show on different types of reverbs, maybe a Fender standalone along with some of the great offerings out now, like the Walrus Fathoms, the aforementioned Caverns and the like.We also need a Reverb specific T-Shirt, something that incorporates a Yoga Mat would be wonderful.

The cabinet was built using laminated spruce boards and it was deeper, wider and taller than the original. He was building it for his fathers 50th birthday as a surprise. The thing I was thinking the whole time while they were talking was TPS! Dan and Mick need to design and build something like that.

The best part is I can safely watch this show while doing my ironing and my kids can sit there without fear of the show turning to profanity (I very much like how you keep the show pretty much g-rated) while I learn all the amazing things you know and discover every week and I can teach my daughters what can make their Daddy’s guitar sound spikey, or wobbly, or echo-like or even sometimes squeaky or wibbly (4 year old and 6 year old daughters make up their own descriptions).
    As to this show, not a bad sound on this board. I don’t know how you would choose. The Dark World was a surprise. What a great sounding spring emulation. Happy Dark World owner here... That thing definitely needs a deeper dive. Some things i've found I like:
    -Stacking the Mod reverb in parallel, but with the mix very low and the tone very dark (and the mod amount also very low), gives some additional space to "lush up" the spring side (or the plate, which sounds amazing!).
    -(You can have one reverb going into another, but that's a different vibe...)
    -When you change the predelay time it modulates the signal, like changing the delay speed on an analog delay pedal. So if you use the ramping/bouncing dipswitches, you can set it to automatically tweak the predelay knob just a tiiiiny bit, creating a modulated reverb sound. (Sounds ace on the plate and hall, but works well on the spring too.) Takes a second to figure out which dipswitches to set, but when you find it you can save it as a preset.
    -The Dark side also has a shimmer that doesn't suck (and the "shimmer down" sound is kinda cool), but the "black" mode is the real gem. It's kinda like a Freeze pedal... Crazy ambient stuff, and you can control the level of playback with expression (like fading a Freeze in and out...). Took me a week to figure out how to use this, but it's really good.
    Hope that helps!

    Excellent work as always, but a glaring omission in my opinion is the EHX Holy Grail, an old standby in the reverb pedal world that just does what it does so well (except for that flerb setting?!?). I know - so many pedals, so little time, we can't squeeze them all in.

    This episode is the reason I keep watching the show every week. I didn’t even know half of these things existed. Thank you, keep them coming.
    P.S. I’d love to see a RAT episode as you guys have mentioned before. That’s the one that guitarists often have some kind of discouraging opinion about, whether it has to be vintage or some boutique copy, etc. A while back I asked to try one at a guitar store and the guy just walked off saying “Nah, you don’t want a RAT”. However, JHS just tossed a standard RAT on a board in their last video and played pretty close to the sound in my head on a great track. I’d love to see some comparisons and your thoughts on what is out there.

    Using the unused channel for driving/dialing in the reverb is such an incredible idea. I love knowing the guy who designed the amp is a guy just like us who has crazy ideas from time to time and just says "fuck it lets do it!". Then we all reap the rewards of one guy following a crazy idea.

  • @Glicksman1
    @Glicksman1 5 років тому +2

    I have always found that reverb in a mix of instruments is the most fragile effect. Often, when what, when heard solo, sounds like sufficient reverb has been put onto a track, the reverb tends to disappear when that track is mixed into the whole recording. Accordingly, the level of the reverb gets raised until it sounds the way we want it. When all sounds good and the track is reverberating nicely in the mix, if you should then solo that track - whoa - it’s actually now quite massively awash in reverb.
    Accordingly, auditioning various reverbs, as you did so well this week, and finding one that satisfies when heard alone is not necessarily going to mean that when it is used at a rehearsal or a gig that it’s going to sound anything like it did when heard on TPS or when played solo at home. This is not only true regarding reverb, but also is true regarding many of the effects that we add to our basic guitar sound. There is a strong symbiosis between and amongst all effects used simultaneously which requires a deft and subtle touch as well as very good ears to create what best pleases.
    I think that the reason why reverb is so particularly fragile and elusive in a mix is that reverb, by its very nature, is a distinct flavour of the acoustic reflective phenomenon, having a specific kind of decay that reflects the original sound many times and very quickly. What we hear as “reverb” which, of course is short for “reverberation”, Is primarily the decay. When another sound is heard at the same time as the reverbed sound that decay gets drowned out very quickly and easily until it’s almost or actually not heard at all. That’s why those tracks require so much reverb to be added so that it will be heard in the mix.
    Anyroad, you guys still always make me want to purchase more gear against my better judgment. This time it’s the Jam Rattler. Thanks a lot. (LOL) Cheers.

    I am convert to the md-500. It replaced 5 pedals off my board , my wah pedal(which i used once a year for Jimi covers), and It has given me more stuff then those pedals did along with more flexibility. It may not be the best sounding of any of those effects but it is 90% as good as most of my favorites and at the end of the day it was a tradeoff i feel is 100% worth it. All that being said in the US the tonal recall is $350 new I see them used over $300, the True springer starts at $229, the wampler is $200. You can find an rv-500 for $270 used takes up not to much room and is packed with functionality. If it is as good as the md-500 I can see that taking over all my reverb duties in the future.

    Great topic! I LOVE the reverb in my 69 Twin Reverb, naturally, so I'm always after that kind of sound. I tried the Headroom, but the dampening system quickly failed. Carl Martin was great about taking it back, but I was hesitant to try again. I had the Van Amps Sole Mate, which also sounded great, but with delicate jacks on all four sides it seemed impractical. I rolled the dice on a Mad Professor Silver Spring digital pedal and it is astonishingly good. Everyone who hears it comments on how natural it sounds. Ah, the experiments never end!

    Not being a gigging musician has one advantage, I never move my gear. My ultimate plan includes a sound-proof shed for my reverb plates, I think I can spare some wall space for a couple of Anasounds Elements tanks. (Right next to the Heil vox boxes of my hose echo, actually.)

    Just watching this and Dan's watch goes off. I then look at Mick's wrist and noticed his watch, which is more old fashioned. Gets me to thinking their watch choice gives insight into how they pick gear. Dan-modern/ teckie, Mick- simple to use and does what it's meant to. I think I may have drank too much last night, if that's the state of my brain this morning!

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  5 років тому

      Ha! There's some truth in that. Dan embraces tech when it comes to connectivity because 85 per cent of his life and business is spent looking at a screen. I've always hated mobile phones and everything that goes with them, so I made a conscious decision a while back to disengage a little bit, even though it's important to our business. As for watches, if it winds itself and is made in Switzerland it's okay by me. I'll get there one day.

    This show is timely. I recently acquired a vintage Princeton (not a Princeton Reverb). It sounds great, but like Dan and Mick I really struggle to play without reverb. Something about the feel seems flat, unless I'm in a really live room. I use a Catalinbread Talisman plate emulator that is amazing, but I'm thinking somewhere down the line some kind of real spring to run into the Princeton might be right nice. The Anasounds unit is very cool. But as commenters below mention, the Surfy Bear products are really intriguing too. Thanks as always, TPS!

    Glad I got my preorder in for the Element. Mine arrived the day before this came out! Phew! It’s obviously brilliant, but the one thing that really surprised me was the baby tank. I never expected it to sound that, well, big. I expected something a lot thinner and splishyer sounding, but it’s not that at all. Anasounds are a great company and all of there pedals are mega so it shouldn’t surprise me that they’ve put a lot of thought into this.

    Thanks for the video. There's something great about a well-designed real spring reverb. I think my favourite is still the Accutronics type used in '60s Fender amps, but some of these short springs, including pedals, have such a great character to them. Also, the emulating of spring just keeps getting better. I especially like the trem/verb combo pedals because they can make a '50s Fender sound much more like a '60s Fender :-)
