Hikvision, Explained: China’s Surveillance Tech Titan

  • Most people don't think about the surveillance cameras they see throughout their everyday life. They are everywhere. The United Kingdom for example has some of the most surveillance cameras in the world. For this video, I want to talk about the companies making those cameras.
Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology (海康威视数字技术公司) is a Chinese state owned company. It dominates the surveillance technology market in both its native China and abroad. It is notorious for its close state ties, for being sanctioned by the American government and for some shoddy security hacks of its hardware.
But there’s another angle about Hikvision’s rise to prominence that interests me. And that is how did it get to be so big in the first place?

Not really visit Shenzhen and see why they are so competitive in the west. They are overpriced in Shenzhen but the cheaper cameras are bought and sold by Western brands at high prices. Hik just happened to charge the Shenzhen price cutting out the middleman.

You've mentioned American fabless semiconductor firm Ambarella in recent videos. Given you're starting to profile fabless semiconductor firms like MediaTek (and maybe in the future HiSilicon, THATIC etc), it might be worth covering Ambarella. Unlike even MediaTek and Qualcomm, it's definitely not a household name that a consumer of Android devices would come across when they research the specifications of their next smartphone. Feel free to ignore this suggestion especially because the company not even based in Asia.

@@Asianometry I guess Ambarella does have an Asia connection given that founder and CEO Fermi Wang is a Taiwanese immigrant. Though pretty much the entire US fabless semiconductor industry seems to be run by people with Taiwanese heritage (from AMD's Lisa Su to NVidia's Jensen Huang).

There is a video about Chongqing I was watching the other day which shows you the city as one of China's premier "smart cities". The idea of the cameras is so the various government departments can fix any problems super fast, so they sit watching these cameras and have a time limit to go and fix the problem, say a water main bursts or there is some pileup on the roads. The claim is by being a smart city they can run the place cheaper and with a higher standard of service. The Chinese are like that - always competing to make their bit they do better and better each year. All the officials are in a meritocratic system of performance.

This is an great video. From what I can tell until now Hikvision has not had a large "moat" (some technology that differentiates itself from competitors) other than its manufacturing scale and associated low prices. In contrast, Huawei builds smartphones and deploys its own compatible 5G infrastructure (at least in the absence of external sanctions).
What's interesting to me is Hikvision's attempts to develop a moat based on AI + facial recognition. I'm sure it doesn't work too well yet but it might one day (the exact same technology is being tested on Uighers in Xinjiang).
Until now it's been possible (for an increased price) to develop trusted IP camera system using components sourced and assembled without any Made In China involvement. For those who don't know, typically IP cameras are just an easily mountable package containing a digital camera module (plus optics) attached to a small motherboard (over eg, an internal high-speed bus such as USB) with a "system-on-chip" that does video compression and provides Ethernet and Wi-Fi networking. The software typically runs Linux, but just like other "Internet Of Things" devices the manufacturers have often unlikely to provide security updates.
It would be great if sanctions against Hikvision lead to a more companies emerging with far fewer links to the Chinese Communist Party that produces IP cameras with guaranteed security updates for a competitive price.

That's not gonna happen as before the emergence of HikVision the industry is simply dominated by Japan and US companies with their duopoly for so many decades with zero innovation and they treat this industry as a niche with insanely and ridiculously high provit margin.
After HikVision ban indeed there will be more innovative surveillance companies emerge as a new player challenging HikVision and they will be predominantly Chinese companies.
      Why...?
Because it has anything to do with a planet scale supply chain that China has and no other countries on the planet so far even come close to match them even for 1/5th of the scale.
Literally no hardware technology companies from everywhere producing everyday life goods spanning from home appliances, audio/video, machineries, chemicals, etc can be independently produced anything by themselves. Everyone have to put significantly high number of Chinese parts in all of their products to bring down cost to meet affordability, either assembled in China or elsewhere.
You just simply can't match the Chinese because their colosal supply chain system was built in the process of 3 decades in the making with unmatched slim profit margin and economies of scale and everyone across the globe becomes so spoiled for its easy access for their parts and instant availability and affordability.
The world is just too scattered where everyone had their own interests with no united goals to build such a supply chain system to challenge the Chinese one.

    • @lordlee6473
      @lordlee6473 3 роки тому +6

Lol. Chinese facial recognition systems are the best in the world. Of course Hikvision has a moat. The fact US is banning it, in other words, scared of it, is exactly because they recognized the company is becoming too dominant and advanced. Chinese facial recognition systems work not just on Asian faces, but all faces. Most American facial recognition systems don’t even work well domestically, let alone in other countries. You are clearly biased. The fact you are calling out CPC as if it’s some kind of evil shows how little you know about China.
