Every Style of Hot Dog We Could Find Across the US

  • Hot dogs are about as American as apple pie. It's not uncommon for different states to offer their unique spins on classic American cuisine, and the hot dog industry is no exception. While some stands and shops take inspiration from other popular local cuisines for their toppings (like adding coleslaw or fish sticks to their classic franks and buns), others insist on layering, excluding, or adding ingredients to ensure their dogs remain a distinct staple to their regional style.

I've seen people post some hotdogs from Brazil or other countries and claim they're superior to US hotdogs. But, they don't realize how large the United States is and how many different varieties of hot dogs and condiments we have. Today I learned that apparently Greek immigrants are hot dog experts. There's like three or four people featured here that made the first of various regional dogs. I, an Italian-American, find more reasons to respect Greece and its people as the days go by. :D

LA street hot dogs have a special place in my heart, every single concert or event I've been to in LA, you bet a street vendor will be waiting outside grilling some tasty dogs, the caramelized onions are the best part!

    • @Park_Place
      @Park_Place 2 місяці тому +4

There are two rules of thumb when it comes to street dogs:
      1. The less official the stand is, the better the food is. If that sweet old Mexican lady is cooking out of a laundry cart and keeps her ketchup and mustard in rinsed-out Suavitel containers, the dogs are gonna be fire. They'll also be super generous with the portions and give you a sausage wrapped in 4 bacon strips topped with a pound of onion for like $6.
      2. The more indistuingishable each ingredient is, the tastier the hot dog will be. You don't want your street dog to look like the photo at Costco food courts. All the ingredients need to mix and make the dog look like garbage in order to maximize the flavor per bite.

As a North Carolinian, our dogs are staples here. But nothing can compete to a coney, (or the skyline dog, but I’ve always still heard them referred to as coneys by my mom who was raised there) all the way with Skyline Chili and Tabasco on top during a cold day. I was 8 when I had my first ever coney in Cincinnati. It was cold as hell outside, and I put Tabasco on top of those chili cheese and onions (I hated onions as a kid but this converted me) and I took a bite of my first ever real deal dog and fell in love. I’m 32 now and have chased that taste ever since. Coneys will always have a place in my heart.

THEY ARE!! And they left some things out,.like how the special ?*pillowy*.*soft*, split-top,.pocket-like buns are slightly gilled with a *touch( of butter*..so tastey, the buns on most American style hot dogs are *usually* the most bland and boring part. NOT with these! (In a pinch, a THICK slice of "Texas Toast" slightly toasted on the outside with kiss of butter will do. Almost fooled me once.)
The green salsa is actually more like a jalapeño puree, I leave it off.
There are tiny diced fresh tomatoes and onions on top (and the grilled onions go in the bottom of the buns, before the dog goes on top of it.
The pinto beans are traditionally lose WHOLE beans. NOT frijoes refritos ("refried beans") if you prefer it.
The cheese is a mild kind of slightly dry crumbled Mexkcan cheese ofter put Tacos Dorados.
There is a little slow Mustard too. But just a *little bit*, not overwhelmingly.
I can't remember if the white stuff on the top is either mild Mex̌can Mayo (subtle, not like most American mayonnaise...or maybe even Mexican "crema" - a thin kinda pourable/squeezable Mexican version of Sour Cream..
      Or something else entirely

This is a great story. We ran a Top Dog cart in DFW for years and brought in different hot dogs and buns from around the country. By far, the Chicago style was the most popular followed by a Texas chili dog. We only did catering jobs and were booked solid from Memorial Day through football season. We traveled to many different spots and a few of our favorites were the Skyline, Maxwell Polish, the Sonoran and the Detroit Coney. If you’re ever in Denver, a trip to Biker Jim’s is a treat as is Pink’s in LA. The ripper in NJ is also a great dog but the Italian served at Jimmy Buff’s was too much for us.

Slight differences but to the experienced palette a distinguishable one. Since Chili is the classic topping for these Detroit landmarks for me I give the edge to Lafayette. I generally eat the first one there then make way nextdoor for a second one at American. Then it's back to Lafayette for a third if I'm still not full. I've done it many times in my 71 years. The oldest Franks, originating from the world, have a history as travelers, much like the Vikings. During times of famine, salted and smoked meats have been a staple in every war, easily carried over the shoulder across farms, ranges, mountains, and woods. These preserved meats were present even when humanity discovered the Earth was not flat. They were made from an array of fermented fruits, vegetables, meats from lamb, goat, beef, pork, poultry, fish, and rice, as well as grains, herbs, beans, spices, whale, potato, and even insects and tree bark. Mustard and sauerkraut are among the oldest condiments served on flatbread.

Son of the sunny South here! Growing up in the 1970s, my mammy and pappy taught me that a hotdog ought to have mustard, chili and onions! NO ketchup! Today's Southerons - yes, that is a word - tend to embrace ketchup on their hotdog. Of all the things in our complicated and divisive history, I wish the South had remained firmly in the no ketchup column. Best wishes and a big thank you to our Northern neighbors in New York and Chicago who embrace other, more exotic ingredients, but still remain firmly committed to no ketchup!

I grew up in South Carolina, and as far back as I can remember my parents would make Carolina Dogs. So these are a must for a real Carolina dog, but I will say that the pink wiener is totally optional. It must have a nice chili with no beans, a coleslaw that can be creamy, but must have some vinegar in it, a nice yellow mustard and some chopped sweet Vidalia onions. I love almost all hotdogs, but the Carolina Dog in my opinion, when made right, is absolutely the best. There is also a Carolina burger that I grew up on as well that has the exact same ingredients, but obviously with a Cheeseburger or regular burger and instead of a hotdog. Wendy's actually sold a Carolina Burger for a limited time, and was pretty good, but the coleslaw needed more vinegar.

In upstate ny, just below the Canadian boarder, we have a local specialty called "michigans". I don't really know why they are called that. It's basically a meat sauce served over hotdogs, particularly with onions and mustard. There is no singular recipe or way that the sauce is made, so everyone has their own recipes ranging from spicy to sweet.
    The recipe I use is
    -3 tsp chili powder
    -3 tsp cayenne powder
    -1&1/2 tsp cumin
    -1 tsp black pepper
-1/4 cup of Frank's red hot sauce
    -2 tsp mixed onions
-1 15oz can of tomato juice
    -2lbs of ground beef.
Brown the meat, then mix in the ingredients.

This is false. Chocolate has never been used in Skyline chili. I'm allergic to it and enjoy eating there. That myth came about when someone posted a copycat recipe in the Cincinnati Enquirer in the 70s-80s claiming to have cracked the code. They thought they discovered chocolate was giving it it's color, but were mistaken. That didn't stop every mother and grandmother from copying it down and putting it in their recipe box. So, now if you eat homemade Cincinnati chili from grandma's "secret recipe" you're really eating a failed copycat recipe from 40-50 years ago. It's why homemade tastes nothing like Skyline.

It's basically a fried hot dog, you can see in the video it gets that unique crinkly texture and has an extra snap when you bite into it, they're fantastic.

I've had my own variation of a chili dog that probably shows its roots pretty strongly: a grilled toploader bun, either a Syracuse coney (white hot dog!) or an all-beef hot dog, a chili sauce, Tabasco and fine-shredded Cheddar.

The crazy thing about this list is, there are still even more regional hot dog styles that aren't on it. I grew up in Plattsburgh, NY, and locally we had Michigans, a type of chili dog that could be found in multiple local hot dog restaurants, even being the name sake of one such place. Funny how so many places across America have their own idea of what the best way to serve a Hot Dog is.

@@tobiashaswell9846 The meat sauce on a Michigan isn't really "chili". It looks like chili but it tastes very different. It's made with Molasses, vinegar, tomato paste, and various spices. It tastes more like BBQ than chili.

Oh and i highly recommend checking out CozyDog in Springfield IL. Theyre similiar but different from corn dogs. They're worth it. The recipe is just different. Youll probably like them better then corn dogs. I personally do. Theyre a tourist staple in Springfield.

I'm eternally depressed because Papaya King which made the best hotdogs in the world has closed its doors permanently. Papaya King which used to be on the corner of 86 street and 3rd Avenue and was in business since the 1930''s is gone forever.

I really dig Chicago dogs, I grew up eating dirty water dogs in NYC... But lately I get my hot dog/soda Costco combo and eat it a way you didn't mention... Boston Style (mustard/ketchup/sweet pickle relish)... I make awesome sauerkraut always in the late spring which me and the kids chow down with it on everything... including hotdogs
