#1 TOYOTA Dealers are NOTORIOUS for doing this, because they can. Their cars hold the highest value, are the most demanded, and best quality cars on the market. They are ARROGANT, even the sales people, are ridiculous. Go from one dealer to another and price match the hell out of them and make them compete for your business, ALWAYS at the end of the month. YOU CANNOT get out of paying delivery, the paper work fee your talking about is the DOC fee. Not all dealers charge you for doc fees, another fee you will NOT get out of paying Doc fees. ADM goes off of market value and dealers are arrogant and TOYOTA dealers are the worst, it is completely legal in many states.
I grew up in the car business, I’m fourth generation, my great grandpa opened the first auto auction in Wisconsin and the first metro in a town two hours away. I literally grew up at a new car dealership, we only went home to sleep. It’s in my blood, even if I don’t want it to be. Just ask the dealer to see the damn invoice, you will rarely get into the holdback or the vehicle but depending on the volume of sales at the dealership, you can definitely negotiate a vehicle under invoice by $1,000-2,500, depending on the dealerships incentives and their want to cut that new car loose they are paying daily interest on. The longer they have the car in inventory the more they will want to cut it loose for a lower price. ALWAYS wait til the last day of the month to buy a new vehicle.
Fact of the matter, new car and truck dealers have so much overhead, most of them die an early death because of the stress, if it’s not the dealer dying early, it’s the GM, trust me, that business is not fit for man nor beast.
Also, the wash boys, who are lucky to make $10/hr, are the ones who prep the car. It takes 30 minutes, not even, to prep. I detest car dealers, after being in the business for three other dealerships for 10 years, after my family was out of it. This is not how we operated our dealership but this is why we aren’t in business anymore because we NEVER charged the things these dealerships do nowadays. Some solid advice here but there’s a lot more to it, please find an invoice and explain the pricing. Also, dealerships do not have two separate invoices or two separate MSRP’s, as you stated they are simply addendums. If a dealership is like this one, get their lowest price and take it to another dealership that will price match. It’s your money after all. Cars are NOT and investment, they are money pits.

So I'm looking at a window sticker on a 2021 Palisade. It says 18" wheels "included" but the convenience package shows 20" wheels for additional $2400....should I ask for the 18" wheels and tires to take home or take the $2400 off the price?

No, you should find a car equipped with what you want... if you cannot order it exactly how you want. Dealers by law must deliver the car with the equipment listed on the window sticker. You can buy the 18" wheels and tires and then try to sell the 20's but you would lose way more than the extra 2400 the manufacturer is charging for the 20's.. THE DEALER DID NOT ADD THEM THE MANUFACTURER added.... Do you want to take off the leather and sunroof and ask for credit too??

Aleks, the problem with all of these VIN# lookup services is they can't get you that information, because it's not contained in the vin#. Now if they had access to the carmaker's internal database for the VIN#, they might get in there and extract the options installed from the car maker's database, based on the VIN#, but this was never the intention of VIN#s. Also car companies like Honda, all the options are installed by the dealer, so there would be no way for th V IN# to tell you what was installed on the car.

Well, I've been in the cars business from 2001 to 2014... I'm selling most is used cars, I hated selling new cars, start out as a new car sales, then moved to used cars. Put it this way, the more options in the car, the more $$ the dealer will made, the bare bone the car, the least $$ the dealership will made. Example, a new bare bone Toyota Yaris, the dealership have about $500 mark up on it, the Fully Loaded Toyota Avalon or Toyota Land Cruiser, the dealership can make a profit up to about $10k, that's also depending on what kind of extra stuffs the dealership add in the car After the manufacturer.

Economics 101... Supply and demand. If there are no cars, dealer can and SHOULD charge more. Let me ask you a question... When you go to the dentist, do you ask him how much he pays for his material for the filling? He charges $300 for a filling that cost him $5. Do you go out to eat and ask the restaurant how much they pay for the steak they are charging you $40 for? NO.. The Automobile is the ONLY commodity that people expect to pay for with NO profit to the dealer. I have worked in the industry for 20 years and for 18 years have sold cars at cost working for 50-60 hours a week to barely make a living. Over the last 2 years I have actually been able to make a living as there have been no cars available and we have been charging sticker for the car. NOBODY forces you to buy a car at any particular price. If you dont like the price, LEAVE the dealership and try to find a better price.

Yes profit is not a problem. It is the gauging junk fees, in the case of this video we showed the window sticker with nearly $5k in fees. We have noticed too that dealer recently upped their dealer fees from $799 typical to $1200 in the case of Autonation. Other dealers in FL still gouging people with $399 electronic filing fee, when there is no state fee for electronic filing on the DMV list of fees. They charge $399 just to hit the send button. We have walked out of 6 dealers this week and have been telling everyone else to do the same. $199 for Nitrogen, and $$650 for a can of Scotch Guard, utter nonsense.

It's not a scam, the sticker looks pretty clear as it's indicated in several places that this is a dealer added invoice. Each car dealership must follow federal guidelines which are the same but in addition each state has it's own set of rules enforced through their DMV. Yes, I worked for several hi line dealerships in California and have worked in every department from sales to service. I can only speak of my experience but I will add that you paint with a very broad brush that dealerships are somehow the enemy that's out to scam you and that's just not the case. Do you not charge for your services? Is that a scam? I'm sure we could find someone that does what you do for less so because you're charging more does that mean your cheating and scamming your customers? In a free market you price your product for as much as you can and still move product. Why is it you feel car dealerships should be excluded from making a profit. If you think it's too much go to another dealership, or buy a car that costs less that's more in line with your budget simple as that.
You offer a product and service and you charge what the market will bear, plus you may have to charge more because your costs of doing business may be more than the cheaper guy down the road. The rent could be more, the taxes higher, there are many factors affecting the sales price of same items being sold at different locations. Dealerships, like all companies, are in the business to make a profit but you have chosen to demonize dealerships in particular for wanting to make a profit. I'm going to guess it's the amount of profit you object to. What amount of profit is fair and acceptable to you? Do you go to Neiman Marcus department store to buy a suit and demand to pay less than the price marked on the suit because the store is over charging for this suit, they are scammers and cheats because they've added extra charges for hemming the pants, taking the waist in... I'm sure you don't. It's a free market, if you don't wish to pay that much for their suit you shop at another store that has cheaper ones.
It's unfair and inaccurate for you to portray all dealerships as being some nefarious haven of corruption, provided of course that trump hasn't opened White House Motors since I wrote this, if he has and the sales people are Ukrainian I might be more inclined to agree with your portrayal in that instance. For the last 15 years I've worked in the exotic car market in service and restoration. With a bit of work I've seen some cars sell for hundreds of thousands more than what it was bought for. Again it comes down to what the market will bear, what affects that is the rarity of the car, is it in short supply, is it a highly sought after model.
When I was in sales I had a client that came in loaded with information from the internet on not what the sticker price was but how much the dealership paid for the car and how much the manufacture held back and gave the dealers to pay for marketing and advertising. That's nice we like well informed buyers, but then he insisted he wouldn't pay a penny more than what the dealership paid for the car as he sat in the stylish and comfortable leather seat in the climate controlled showroom sipping the cappuccino I had just brought him. Aah, I understand. You're in the wrong dealership, we do sell that model and I'd be happy to work out a fair and competitive price for that model but for the amount you want to pay you would need to go to the dirt lot by the port in a sketchy part of town. No one is there to take you for a test drive. Bring some soap and a bucket of water as the car is going to be pretty dirty from sitting out. Oh and you will have to remove all the packing, styrofoam and plastic wrap before it can be driven. Better bring a gas can with you, those cars are on fumes. Don't go at night as there is no lighting there and you can't see.
Do you speak Japanese? You will need to call Japan and see if they will agree to sell you the car for the same price they sell to the dealership. Of course they may require you to obtain a dealer license to do so, which will probably require a sizeable investment to be insured and bonded. Of course you will need to get all the right paperwork first from the DMV to have it filed and approved. You should really hire a lawyer to help you with that. Oh when you go to the port make sure you bring an umbrella. it's suppose to rain this week and there isn't any shelter to get out of the rain at the port. How are you with international paperwork and dealing with customs? Perhaps on your way you can stop at a 7=11 for a coffee as there isn't a beverage service offered at the port. Thank you for coming in and good luck with that, here's my business card when your ready to sit down and you're serious about purchasing your new car call me I'll do my best to get you a fair price we can both be happy with.
Contrary to the general public's perception of car sales people, fostered by videos like this, some deserved no doubt and much not, I never lied, misrepresented, cheated, scammed, tricked, or in any way promised something I didn't deliver. I was commonly asked what was are you doing selling cars, you're too nice.

LOL, defensive much? You wrote the longest soliloquy in UA-cam history, and your opening lie about it's not a scam is just that, a lie, what we pointed out in this video, it is a scam. We are not painting broad strokes and lumping all salespeople together like you falsely claimed, so stop your typical defensive troll lying. We simply pointed out the addendum sticker, and all the useless fees, and warn people not to pay them, no one ever reads the fine print on these, so no it's not obvious like you falsely claimed, that the dealer is disclosing their profits here. Also, not sure what it is you are falsely claiming we overcharge people for, we don't sell any product or service, so there's another of your lies we are not selling anything to consumers. We are used to guys like you, been getting false comments from guys like you since we started in 1999, always trying to discredit our free information, and when you can't, you resort to lies to try to make it look like we are ripping off the consumers, when we are saving them from guys like you.
