Lived through two world wars, the Great Depression, the mainstreaming of movies, the birth of jazz, Korea, Vietnam, the birth of rock and Motown, Kennedy, the birth of tv, the moon landing, Civil Rights, The Cold War, the Internet, 9/11, the War on Terror, all the way iPhones and the first Black President. Ms. McLaurin was born in 1909 and is still with us (May 11, 2018). And she's really doing something with her life. A few points:
    * It was illegal for women to vote for 11 more years.
    * Her husband was one of the first to give his life in WWII.
    * In her early 80s, 'Grandma Virginia' began what turned into over two decades of mentoring schoolchildren (some with special needs) in D.C.
    * In 2017 she received the President's Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) for Lifetime Achievement.
She's on my list of heroes.
Update Oct 31, 2024: Ms. McLaurin passed at home on November 14, 2022 at, yes, the age of 113.

It was not just blacks who suffered, there were many, Asians, Italians, Russians, Irish, Scottish. These people, when they immigrated, were treated as inferior (having Irish blood was just as bad as having black skin)

+Al Garabedian Well a presidency not only works over laws and policies, but also symbols and signals sent into the society, which can be done by single events as well as speeches etc. Which is what I love about the Obama's, they "preach" kindness, peace, equality, humor, a positive, open hearted attitude. As seen in the video. Unfortunately a president can only use symbolic events such as meeting this very lady but doesn't have the time to meet them all.

The same Obama family that Barack Obama supports the BLM movement and does nothing to protect police officers all over the U.S.? Oh and just a couple of days ago during a press conference he held while in Louisiana because of the flood, almost a week after the flood happened because he was too busy golfing at Martha's Vineyard mind you, said, "I only have 5 months left, so I don't care about policy." I think you really need to take your head out of the sand. The Obama family have done nothing but run up a tab that they will never pay for and leave it for the American people to pay for. They have been a plague to this country. Both his administration and Bush Jr's administration have destroyed this country.

Yeah, it was HOW she said it. That look in her face. My grandpa was born in 1903, died when I was tiny, but had told us his grandpa served in the Civl War, and he had known his gramma. So I suspect this old woman’s grandparents were slaves, and she might have heard their stories as a tiny girl. When she saw Obama, she was probably imagining her grandparents’ faces and how now finally they are free and equal.

@@321scully I think you're right. So my great great grandmother lived to be 106. Whenever someone asked her the secret to long life she would grin and say "Peanut Butter! Eat as much as you like!" I think the secret is happiness and positivity. Not that you never experience or feel deep sadness but that you keep a positive outlook through painful times.

I'm so curious. Being 106, she MUST have seen SO MUCH in her lifetime. I don't say that lightly, I mean LITERALLY. To be in a moment of time PHYSICALLY STANDING NEXT to a president of her country who is by chance the color once hated in her time, must have blown her mind. ... and then we had Trump... hmmmm....

Im thanking Jesus for all that she has been through. And all that african- americans have overcame. Non believers in Jesus are the people who used to spit on blacks and were for the Jim crow laws. Just like you are mocking me for believing in Jesus. Its people like you all who keep hatred alive. I hope it burns you and consumes you to ashes untill you are nothing. The fire that burns in me is greater then any thing you can throw against me and it gives me everlasting life. Dont mock my God.
